Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Inorganic Chemistry The physical properties Of substances are treated rather more fully than in the earlier text-books, since the tendency today, introduced by physical chemistry, is to bring chemistry and physics more closely together, rather than to separate them as two distinct sciences. The physical properties Of a substance are taken up after its chemical properties, in order that the teacher may conveniently omit more or less Of this part of the text if the pupil is not sufficiently advanced to properly appreciate its meaning. The experiments are placed at the ends of chapters rather than in the body of the text or at the end of the book. By this means the text is made continuous and more readable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inorganic Chemistry Two Kinds of Changes In Matter. An examination of these changes shows that they can all be classified under two heads: those in which no new kind of matter is formed, and those which result in the formation of new substances with new properties. The former are called physical changes, the latter chemical changes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Principles of Inorganic Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Inorganic Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Harry C. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Inorganic Chemistry The phase rule of Willard Gibbs has also played its part in the recent developments in inorganic chemistry. It has laid special stress upon the conditions of equilibrium between the different phases of the same and different substances, and has predicted the existence of unknown substances, many of which have recently been found. The phase rule is a beautiful, short-hand expression of great masses of facts, and it gives us a comprehensive grasp of these facts which without it would be impossible. The application of Faraday' 3 law as the basis of chemical valence is not a new conception, but the importance of this application has only recently become apparent. The importance of ions, which are charged atoms or groups of atoms, and the study of electrochemical phenomena in general have made prominent the fact that the law of Faraday is a fundamental law of chemistry as well as of physical chemistry. If we do not recognize this relation, the term chemical valence is without exact significance and meaning; when based upon the law of Faraday - a law to which thus far no exception is known - valence has an exact physical basis, and this is an impor tant step for the development of chemistry. Book The Halogens and Their Allies Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Halogens and Their Allies Classic Reprint written by Geoffrey Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Halogens and Their Allies During the past few years the civilised world has begun to realise the advantages accruing to scientific research, with the result that an ever increasing amount of time and thought is being devoted to various branches Of science. NO study has progressed more rapidly than chemistry. This science may be divided roughly into several branches: namely, Organic, Physical, Inorganic, and Analytical Chemistry. It is impossible to write any single text-book which Shall contain within its two covers a thorough treatment Of any One of these branches, owing to the vast amount Of information that has been accumulated. The need is rather for a series Of text-books dealing more or less comprehensively with each branch Of chemistry. This has already been attempted by enterprising firms, so far as physical and analytical chemistry are concerned; and the present series is designed to meet the needs Of inorganic chemists. One great advantage Of this procedure lies in the fact that our knowledge of the different sections Of science does not progress at the same rate. Consequently, as soon as any particular part advances out of proportion to others, the volume dealing with that section may be easily revised or rewritten as occasion requires. Some method of classifying the elements for treatment in this way is clearly essential, and we have adopted the Periodic Classification with Slight alterations, devoting a whole volume to the consideration of the elements in each vertical column, as will be evident from a glance at the scheme in the Frontispiece. In the first volume, in addition to a detailed account Of the Elements of Group 0, the general principles of Inorganic Chemistry are discussed. Particular pains have been taken in the selection of material for this volume, and an attempt has been made to present to the reader a clear account Of the principles upon which our knowledge of modern Inorganic Chemistry is based. At the outset it may be well to explain that it was not intended to write a complete textbook of Physical Chemistry. Numerous excellent works have already been devoted to this subject, and a volume on such lines would scarcely serve as a suitable introduction to this series. Whilst Physical Chemistry deals with the general principles applied to all branches Of theoretical chemistry, our aim has been to emphasise their application to Inorganic Chemistry, with which branch Of the subject this series of text books is exclusively concerned. TO this end practically all the illustrations to the laws and principles discussed in Volume I. Deal with inorganic substances. Book Structural Inorganic Chemistry

Download or read book Structural Inorganic Chemistry written by Alexander Frank Wells and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2012-07-12 with total page 1424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth edition of this widely acclaimed work has been reissued as part of the Oxford Classic Texts series. The book includes a clear exposition of general topics concerning the structures of solids, and a systematic description of the structural chemistry of elements and their compounds. The book is divided into two parts. Part I deals with a number of general topics, including the properties of polyhedra, the nature and symmetry of repeating patterns, and the ways in which spheres, of the same or different sizes, can be packed together. In Part II the structural chemistry of the elements is described systematically, arranged according to the groups of the Periodic Table.

Book A Text Book of Inorganic Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Inorganic Chemistry Classic Reprint written by George Senter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Inorganic Chemistry It follows from the above statement that the theoretical part of the subject is distributed throughout the book. The different topics are dealt with as Opportunity offers, but the treatment of any particular subject is postponed till facts illustrating it have been mentioned. The subject in question is then considered as fully as space permits - a mode of procedure which appears preferable to dealing with it in a fragmentary manner in different parts of the book. The latter method may usefully be employed for lectures, but the former method greatly increases the value of the book for purposes of reference and revision. As regards the order, I have also been guided to some extent by the historical development of the science. Subject to the above considerations, the more important branches of chemical theory, including the Principles of Chemical Equilibrium, the determination of Molecular Weights in Solu tion, Electrolysis and Electrolytic Dissociation, are introduced at a fairly early stage of the work, and their applications are repeatedly illustrated in the latter part of the book. The Periodic System is described after the non-metals, and serves as the basis for the discussion of the metals and their com pounds. One of the main tasks of a teacher is so to familiarize the student with a general principle that he learns to apply it with confidence. The mere statement of a principle, in the expectation that the student will straightway apply it in his later work, is useless. It will be found that the subjects usually included in an Elementary Course, such as Stage I. Of the Board of Education, are all dealt with in the early part of the book, and the more advanced work in the later chapters. Further division of the subject into stages leads inevitably to the result that information regarding any important element has to be sought for in different parts of the book, thus rendering it much less useful for purposes of reference and revision.
