Book excerpt: Nitric oxide (NO) is a gas that transmits signals in an organism. Signal transmission by a gas that is produced by one cell and which penetrates through membranes and regulates the function of another cell represents an entirely new principle for signaling in biological systems. NO is a signal molecule of key importance for the cardiovascular system acting as a regulator of blood pressure and as a gatekeeper of blood flow to different organs. NO also exerts a series of other functions, such as acting a signal molecule in the nervous system and as a weapon against infections. NO is present in most living creatures and made by many different types of cells. NO research has led to new treatments for treating heart as well as lung diseases, shock, and impotence. Scientists are currently testing whether NO can be used to stop the growth of cancerous tumors, since the gas can induce programmed cell death, apoptosis. This book is the first comprehensive text on nitric oxide to cover all aspects--basic biology, chemistry, pathobiology, effects on various disease states, and therapeutic implications. - Edited by Nobel Laureate Louis J. Ignarro, editor of the Academic Press journal, Nitric Oxide - Authored by world experts on nitric oxide - Includes an overview of basic principles of biology and chemical biology - Covers principles of pathobiology, including the nervous system, cardiovascular function, pulmonary function, and immune defense

This book was released on 1999-03 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sapporo International Symposium on "Recent Advances in Nitric Oxide Research" was held in Sapporo, Japan, in 1997, following the Fifth International Meeting on the Biology of Nitric Oxide in Kyoto, Japan, organized by Dr. Salvador Moncada, Dr. Noboru Toda, and Dr. Hiroshi Maeda. The field of nitric oxide research continues to expand rapidly, and our understanding of the physiological and pathophysiological roles of NO has increased greatly. The Kyoto Meeting was stimulating and informative, providing impetus for the Sapporo Symposium, which I had the great honor to organize. To communicate the information from these events, Dr. Ichiro Sakuma and I decided to publish this book. The contents of its chapters were contributed by the participants who were active at the Sapporo symposium and cover the majority of the presentations made during that symposium. Dr. Csaba Szabo of Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati (U. S. A. ) reviews the roles of peroxynitrite and poly(ADP-ribose)synthetase in shock, inflammation, and reperfusion injury, and Dr. David A. Geller and his colleagues of the University of Pittsburgh (U. S. A. ) review the regulation and function of NO in the liver. As contributions from the Hokkaido University School of Medicine (Sapporo), Dr. Hiroko Togashi and colleagues present their data on transient cerebral ischemia and NO production, Dr.

Book Recent Advances in Grain Crops Research

Download or read book Recent Advances in Grain Crops Research written by Farooq Shah and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultivation of grain crops has been rightly recognized as one of the main drivers in shaping human civilizations. Considering their key role in fulfilling a major portion of the global food needs, grain crops are the most widely grown crops around the world. Unfortunately, like many other agronomic crops, grain crops are quite vulnerable to climate change and this has posed multifaceted threats to agricultural sustainability. To add to the menace, the deteriorating quantity and quality of both land and water as primary factors of production are further aggravating the scenario. Confronting such challenges demands innovative adaptation strategies through intensification of grain crop production that can ensure grain self-sufficiency worldwide.

Book Recent Advances in Prostaglandin Thromboxane and Leukotriene Research

Download or read book Recent Advances in Prostaglandin Thromboxane and Leukotriene Research written by Helmut Sinzinger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Prostaglandins and Related Compounds, first held in Vienna 1972, revisited the city after 24 years for the 10TH Symposium. For the many re searchers working in this multi-disciplinary field it was an opportunity to exchange their ex periences and share new data with colleagues from all around the world. This scientific exchange was largely encouraged by the unseasonably cold and rainy weather. For the first time, there was quite a large attendance from the former Communist countries. Eugene Garfield prepared a key note address delivered during the meeting (The Sci entist 1996, 12) reviewing the contribution of the Nobel Laureates U.S. von Euler, l.R. Vane, S.K. Bergstrom, and B.I. Samuelsson, discussing the relevance of the more than 40,000 pa pers in this area published since 1991. Overall, there is still a rapidly growing interest, and in particular a great variety of clinical applications of this family of compounds which were dis cussed in detail during the meeting. Beside the lectures there were 19 workshops covering nearly all the topics of key in terest. All the speakers were invited to prepare a manuscript which has resulted in the volume now in your hands. Special thanks to Dr. Patrick Wong and the new publisher of this series who helped to publish the proceedings in the usual quality and reasonable period of time. Looking forward to seeing all of you again in Florence in 1999, hopefully with much more sun.
