Book Advances in Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Download or read book Advances in Fluid Mechanics Measurements written by MOHAMED GAD-EL-HAK and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One cannot overemphasize the importance of studying fluids in motion or at rest for a variety of scientific and engineering endeavors. Fluid mechanics as an art reaches back into antiquity, but its rational formulation is a relatively recent undertaking. Much of the physics of a particular flow situation can be understood by conducting appropriate experiments. Flow visualization techniques offer a useful tool to establish an overall picture of a flow field and to delineate broadly its salient features before embarking on more detailed quantitative measurements. Among the single-point measurements that are particularly difficult are those in separated flows, non-Newtonian fluids, rotating flows, and nuclear aerosols. Pressure, shear stress, vorticity, and heat transfer coefficient are also difficult quantities to measure, particularly for time-dependent flows. These and other special situations are among the topics covered in this volume. Each article emphasizes the development of a particular measuring technique. The topics covered were chosen because of their importance to the field, recent appeal, and potential for future development. The articles are comprehensive and coverage is pedagogical with a bias towards recent developments.

Book Recent Advances in Computational Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Recent Advances in Computational Fluid Dynamics written by C.C. Chao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the preface: Fluid dynamics is an excellent example of how recent advances in computational tools and techniques permit the rapid advance of basic and applied science. The development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has opened new areas of research and has significantly supplemented information available from experimental measurements. Scientific computing is directly responsible for such recent developments as the secondary instability theory of transition to turbulence, dynamical systems analyses of routes to chaos, ideas on the geometry of turbulence, direct simulations of turbulence, three-dimensional full-aircraft flow analyses, and so on. We believe that CFD has already achieved a status in the tool-kit of fluid mechanicians equal to that of the classical scientific techniques of mathematical analysis and laboratory experiment.

These papers cover almost all aspects of CFD including numerical analysis, symbolic analysis, and grid genera tion. They cover diverse topics such as complex plume flows, shock waves and shock focussing, coronary circulation, free surface flows, direct containment heat ing in nuclear reactors, and uranium enrichment. There is also an article on the progress and future directions in CFD by one of the true experts in this area. In addition to CFD papers, there is an experimental paper on the flow of spherical glass beads in airflow in a 90° vertical-to-horizontal bend, as well as a historical paper on seventy years of fluid dynamic research at Aerodynamisches Institut at Aachen. It is worth pointing out that there is also an article on the simple fluid concept by a world-renowned authority on continuum mechanics.
