Book Skin Pharmacology and Toxicology

Download or read book Skin Pharmacology and Toxicology written by Corrado L. Galli and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major skin diseases, including acne, psoriasis and eczcma, affect the majority of the population at some time in their lives. In general, these diseases are physically and psychologically disfiguring for the sufferers; furthermore, by their very chronic nature skin diseases, unlike most other disease processes, present both acute and chronic therapy problems. In addition, the chronic nature of these diseases can present certain economic problems. Firstly, chronic therapy is becoming increasingly expensive and secondly, patients adhering to a strict treatment regimen will frequently be absent from their gainful employment for either medical consultation or treatment. Given that in all NATO countries the average age of the population is continually increasing, these chronic skin diseases will increase in importance in the coming years. Furthermore, as the average population age increases, additional disease processes such as skin photodamage and carcinogenicity risk becoming major areas of therapeutic concern. This book reviews in detail the major scientific areas of interest for research and clinical scientists working in skin pharmacology and toxicology. The basic principles relating to an understanding of how drugs and chemicals may influence either the skin or the body as a whole are discussed in detail by recognized international scientific experts.

Book Dermal Drug Selection and Development

Download or read book Dermal Drug Selection and Development written by Lionel Trottet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors show how the pharmaceutical industry faces the development of dermal drugs and provide the only book of its kind that describes how the industry develops and selects dermal drugs, complete with the challenges and opportunities of the field. Delivery of drugs through the skin has been an attractive and challenging area for research, and advances in modern technologies have resulted in a larger number of drugs being delivered transdermally, including conventional hydrophobic small molecule drugs, hydrophilic drugs and macromolecules. Offering the perspective from the industrial side of selection and development of drugs, the primary audience is geared towards the pharmaceutical industry but can also offer valuable information to clinicians, compounding pharmacists, and similarly pharmacy students. Dermal Drug Selection and Development covers the scientific gaps that exist in terms of dermal pharmacokinetics and the resulting uncertainty by clinicians when choosing a drug candidate.

Download or read book Topics in Topicals written by R. Marks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substances that are applied to the skin to heal it, make it feel better or improve its appearance, have much in common. They can all do damage to the skin as well as perform the task for which they were designed. They and the substances they contain are all absorbed through the skin to a greater or lesser extent. In addition, all these agents are constructed in the same general way. For these reasons it seems odd and uneconomical to consider topical pharmaceuticals, toiletry products and cosmetics separately. This was the reasoning behind the holding of a small symposium of workers involved with one or another aspect of the formulation of substances destined for application to the skin. Several aspects of the subject are covered in this book which is based on the symposium and the contents should be of interest to all who are concerned with the prescription, assess ment or formulation of topical agents. 9 1 Acne Caused and Treated by Topical Agents W. J. CUNLIFFE The four main aetiological factors involved in the development of l acne are (1) an elevated sebum excretion rate ; (2) ductal hyper 3 keratinization 2; (3) an abnormality of microbial function ; (4) host 4 inflammatory response • Although opinions differ on both sides of the Atlantic, most authorities in the United Kingdom believe that increased sebum excretion rate is the main drive to acne, there being a definitive relationship between the severity of the acne and the seborrhoea of this disease.
