Book Turkey s Accession to the European Union

Download or read book Turkey s Accession to the European Union written by Belgin Akçay and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Turkey has a long-held aspiration for European Union membership and has been a candidate for more than a decade, relations between the EU and Turkey have not received the attention it deserves from non-Turkish researchers thus far, and consequently the international literature on EU-Turkey relations is rather limited. In light of recent global economic and political challenges for the EU and Turkey, a need has emerged for an interdisciplinary approach to study EU-Turkey relations within the wider international political and economic context. Turkey's Accession to the European Union: Political and Economic Challenges, edited by Belgin Ak ay and Bahri Yilmaz, provides a timely overview of some of the most important issues and debates in the changing context of Europe, the change in domestic politics and foreign policy in Turkey, and the likely implications of these changes and developments for EU-Turkey relations. Within this framework, this collection includes articles emphasizing Turkey's reform process with a view to EU accession, despite EU's reservations about "absorbing" Turkey and the eventual decoupling of the Turkish reform process from European integration, as well as searching for alternative forms of cooperation or transitional arrangements which may be possible for Turkey at the time of accession.

Book Poland From Partitions to EU Accession

Download or read book Poland From Partitions to EU Accession written by Piotr Koryś and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys Poland’s move from being a post-feudal, backward, peripheral country to being a modern, capitalist, European state: from the partition of the commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania to the abolishment of ‘second serfdom’; late industrialization to state socialism; post-partition fragmentation to post-Second World War westward dislocation; and from the ‘Solidarność’ movement to accession into the European Union. Could Poland really be considered an ‘underdeveloped’ nation throughout the last 200 years? What factors contributed to its ‘backwardness’? Has Poland yet managed to catch up with the West? This book, the first overview of the modern economic history of Poland to be published in English, addresses these and many other questions crucial for developing our understanding of the economic history of modern Central-Eastern Europe. The economic development of Poland is analyzed through data and statistics, as well as through analysis of the ideas that paved the way for the politics of economic and social modernization.

Book Turkey and the EU Accession and Reform

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkish accession to the European Union is an important but controversial item on the agenda of the European Union. By focusing on the various domestic sources that drive Turkish politics, this comprehensive study of both classic and new topics supported by fresh, new insights fills a void in the current literature on Turkey-EU relations. This volume is a comprehensive, state of the art study of domestic politics and policies and their role in Turkey’s EU accession. Contributions are obtained from established scholars, acknowledged for their expertise in their respective fields. The content is structured along issues, dynamics, actors and policies that drive Turkish politics and it provides an integrated assessment of the dynamics in Turkey-EU relations to general readers, students and specialists in EU Enlargement and Turkish politics alike. Original contributions to ‘classic’ topics such as the customs union, human rights, military, civil society, public and elite opinion, political parties and the Kurdish issue are made by assessing the domestic sources of recent developments during the negotiations period. In addition, ‘new’ topics are included that previously have not been covered or analyzed in volumes on Turkish-EU relations such as the Alevi issue, European Turks, corruption in Turkey, and Turkish parliamentary elite opinion on Turkey and the EU. This book was published as a special issue of South European Society and Politics.

Book Recent Developments in International Labor Law

Download or read book Recent Developments in International Labor Law written by Biljana Chavkoska and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2022 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, , language: English, abstract: The basic idea for creating the European Union is the Internal Market where free movement of people, capital, services and goods is established. The creation of the Internal Market is the central raison d’etre of the EU existence. The freedom of movement of people is one of the four freedoms of the Internal Market. The right to move is the basic right of the European citizens. The realization of this freedom was harder than practicing the free movement of capital, services and goods. Therefore, the European Union is still taking subsequent actions for realization of the freedom of movement of people. At the beginning, the freedom of movement of people was available just for the working population, but latter on the freedom of movement included all the categories of citizens, students, retired people and people who are not economically active. Throughout the years European Union makes efforts to change the approach towards the third country nationals, especially the working population as one of the conditions for fulfillment of the Lisbon Strategy goals. The European Union adopted important primary, secondary law and case law of the European Court of Justice such as the Association Agreements regulating the freedom of movement of third country workers. These Association Agreements with Third Countries provide articles for free movement of third country workers in the European Union and vice versa. For a long time, the Association Agreements are the basic law regulating the freedom of movement of third country workers. The European Court of Justice played important role in interpreting the articles for freedom of movement of workers and giving direct effect in the national laws of the Member States. In the last two years European Union has adopted secondary law for improving the status of third country workers especially for highly qualified workers. The entrance of highly qualified workers in the Member States is important for realization of the economic growth and development, such as decreasing the unemployment rate.

Book The Impact of EU Accession on the Legal Orders of New EU Member States and Pre Candidate Countries

Download or read book The Impact of EU Accession on the Legal Orders of New EU Member States and Pre Candidate Countries written by Alfred E. Kellerman and published by T.M.C. Asser Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a Foreword by Jaap de Zwaan On 1 May 2004, ten countries joined the European Union as Member States. In that same year, five other countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, and Turkey) had or received (pre-)candidate country status. EU accession requires a great number of adaptations in the laws and policies of a country. In order to analyse the impact of these developments and support the countries concerned, the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague initiated a project originally entitled ‘The impact of EU accession for the acceding Member States and (pre-)candidate countries’. The project, which was approved by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and financed under the Ministry’s Matra Programme, started at the beginning of 2003 and concluded during the Dutch EU presidency with a final conference in The Hague in October 2004. In preparation for this conference, a group of distinguished experts from the fifteen participating countries analysed, according to identical guidelines, the impact of accession on the organization of their national governments, parliaments and judiciaries, as well as on their national constitutions. Their research activities resulted in fifteen country reports offering a multitude of interesting insights, views and experiences. In 2005, the reports were updated by the authors and editors of this book, so that they could be made available to the wider public. As a comparative study of fifteen countries, it is an excellent guide for the preparation of the national legal orders for EU accession, for briefing and training civil servants, judges, practitioners, officials of international organizations and academics, and for post-graduate students. The multi-country research project was carried out by, and under the guidance of, Alfred E. Kellermann, T.M.C. Asser Institute, Jenö Czuczai, European Law Academy Budapest, Steven Blockmans, T.M.C. Asser Institute, and Anneli Albi, University of Kent. They also formed the editing team of the book, which was further complemented by Wybe Th. Douma, T.M.C. Asser Institute.
