Book Relating Theory and Data

Download or read book Relating Theory and Data written by Stephan Lewandowsky and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This festschrift represents the proceedings of a conference held in honor of Bennet B. Murdock, one of the foremost researchers and theoreticians on human memory and cognition. A highly renowned investigator respected for both his empirical and theoretical contributions to the field, Murdock summarized and focused a large amount of research activity with his 1974 book Human Memory: Theory and Data. This unique collection of articles addresses many of the issues discussed in his classic text. Divided into five principal sections, its coverage includes: theoretical perspectives on human memory ranging from a biological view to an exposition of the value of formal models; recent progress in the study of processes in immediate memory and recognition memory; and new developments in componential and distributed approaches to the modeling of human memory. Each section concludes with an integrative commentary provided by some of Murdock’s eminent colleagues from the University of Toronto. Thus, this book offers a diversity of perspectives on contemporary topics in the discipline, and will be of interest to students and scholars in all branches of cognitive science.

  • Author : Robert L. Greene
  • Publisher : Psychology Press
  • Release : 2014-01-02
  • ISBN : 1317782801
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Human Memory written by Robert L. Greene and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that cognitive psychology has become largely concerned with a handful of laboratory tasks has brought expressions of concern and suggestions about how to place the field on a more solid footing. The view expressed here, however, is that the classic cognitive paradigms have become fascinating puzzles on which some of the best minds in the field have labored. An examination of the development of research in these areas yields many examples of the scientific method at its most sophisticated, as well as impressive examples of how theories and data can interact. Covering the whole temporal range of memory experiences, this volume provides a review of the major paradigms that have been used by experimental psychologists to study human memory.

Book Distinctiveness and Memory

Download or read book Distinctiveness and Memory written by R. Reed Hunt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research relevant to the topic of distinctiveness and memory dates back over 100 years and boasts a literature of well over 2,000 published articles. Throughout this history, numerous theories of distinctiveness and memory have been offered and subsequently refined. There has, however, never been a book that brings this rich history together with the latest research. This volume is the first to present an historical overview, the results of the current research, and several new theories on distinctiveness and memory. Each chapter contains a review of the relevant literature and latest research on its topic. The book includes sections that cover basic theory and behavioral research on distinctiveness, bizarreness effects, distinctiveness effects on implicit memory, the development of distinctiveness across the lifespan, distinctiveness in social context, and the neuroscience of distinctiveness and memory. In the concluding chapter, Fergus Craik offers his current perspective on distinctiveness and evaluates the various other theories of distinctiveness presented in the volume. Distinctiveness and Memory will be a valuable resource for student and professional researchers in neuroscience and cognitive, developmental, and social psychology.

Book Pattern Recognition in Soft Computing Paradigm

Download or read book Pattern Recognition in Soft Computing Paradigm written by Nikhil R. Pal and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pattern recognition (PR) consists of three important tasks: feature analysis, clustering and classification. Image analysis can also be viewed as a PR task. Feature analysis is a very important step in designing any useful PR system because its effectiveness depends heavily on the set of features used to realise the system. A distinguishing feature of this volume is that it deals with all three aspects of PR, namely feature analysis, clustering and classifier design. It also encompasses image processing methodologies and image retrieval with subjective information. The other interesting aspect of the volume is that it covers all three major facets of soft computing: fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolutionary computing. Contents: Dimensionality Reduction Techniques for Interactive Visualization, Exploratory Data Analysis, and Classification (A KAnig); Feature Selection by Artificial Neural Network for Pattern Classification (B Chakraborty); A New Clustering with Estimation of Cluster Number Based on Genetic Algorithm (K Imai et al.); Minimizing the Measurement Cost in the Classification of New Samples by Neural-Network-Based Classifiers (H Ishibuchi & M Nii); Extraction of Fuzzy Rules from Numerical Data for Classifiers (N R Pal & A Sarkar); A Texture Image Segmentation Method Using Neural Networks and Binary Features (J Zhang & S Oe); Image Retrieval System Based on Subjective Information (K Yoshida et al.); and other papers. Readership: Graduate students, researchers and lecturers in pattern recognition and image analysis."

Book Machine Vision and Machine Learning for Plant Phenotyping and Precision Agriculture

Download or read book Machine Vision and Machine Learning for Plant Phenotyping and Precision Agriculture written by Huajian Liu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-18 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant phenotyping (PP) describes the physiological and biochemical properties of plants affected by both genotypes and environments. It is an emerging research field that is assisting the breeding and cultivation of new crop varieties to be more productive and resilient to challenging environments. Precision agriculture (PA) uses sensing technologies to observe crops and then manage them optimally to ensure that they grow in healthy conditions, have maximum productivity, and have minimal negative effects on the environment. Traditionally, the observation of plant traits heavily relies on human experts which is labor intensive, time-consuming, and subjective. Automatic crop traits measurement in PP and PA are two different fields, but they share the same sensing and data processing technologies in many respects. Recently, driven by computer and sensor technologies, machine vision (MV) and machine learning (ML) have contributed to accurate, high-throughput, and nondestructive plant phenotyping and precision agriculture. However, these technologies are still in their infant stage and there are many challenges and questions related to them that still need to be addressed. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide a platform to share the latest research results on the application of MV and ML for PP and PA. It aims to highlight cutting-edge technologies, bottle-necks, and future research directions for MV and ML in crop breeding, crop cultivation, disease management, weed control, and pest control.
