Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rebuilding Rural America The Reverend Mark A. Dawber was born and educated in England. His aptitude for music led to special training in piano and organ at the London College of Music and he expected to make music his profession. He then became interested in the social movements of the day and studied at Ruskin College, Oxford, where he took both social studies and theological courses. Later he served in the educational department of a large consumer cooperative in Manchester. He took an active part in the development of the labor movement in England, being associated with the Independent Labor Party. Dr. Dawber came to America in 1911, and spent a year in special studies at Boston University School of Theology, Drew Theological Seminary, and Garrett Biblical Institute. He was challenged by the rural situation which he found here and accepted an appointment to an open-country circuit under the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was ordained to the ministry of that church in 1916. The success of his ministry in rural churches resulted in a call in 1919 to the chair of Rural Leadership in Boston University School of Theology. After six years in this professorship he was appointed to his present position, Superintendent of the Department of Town and Country Work of the Board of Home Missions and Church Extension of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In this capacity he has had unusual opportunity to study rural conditions in every part of the United States and Canada. He has lectured widely upon various aspects of rural life, and has been especially active in developing summer schools for the training of rural ministers. Faster speeds of passenger vehicles require smoother road surfaces for easy control and wider roads and intersections for safety. The heavier weights of vehicles require stronger roadbeds and bridges. Many rural roads do not meet reasonable standards for today's use. These defects, in turn, often lead to new attacks of sickness. Studies by the Farm Security Administration involving thousands of low-income farm people in seventeen States, showed between 3 and 4 significant defects per, person. Fourteen percent of the men and women, for example, had varicose veins. One farm operator out of every 12 had a hernia. Nine teen percent had hemorrhoids, and 42 percent of the wives, in the white families alone, had internal tears due to childbirth. Many had defective vision not corrected by glasses or had badly infected tonsils. There were far too many underweight and malnourished children. Serious conditions of the teeth occurred in practically everyone. How these conditions must affect a farm'_ family's ability to produce is obvious.
