Book Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation s Electricity System

Download or read book Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation s Electricity System written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans' safety, productivity, comfort, and convenience depend on the reliable supply of electric power. The electric power system is a complex "cyber-physical" system composed of a network of millions of components spread out across the continent. These components are owned, operated, and regulated by thousands of different entities. Power system operators work hard to assure safe and reliable service, but large outages occasionally happen. Given the nature of the system, there is simply no way that outages can be completely avoided, no matter how much time and money is devoted to such an effort. The system's reliability and resilience can be improved but never made perfect. Thus, system owners, operators, and regulators must prioritize their investments based on potential benefits. Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation's Electricity System focuses on identifying, developing, and implementing strategies to increase the power system's resilience in the face of events that can cause large-area, long-duration outages: blackouts that extend over multiple service areas and last several days or longer. Resilience is not just about lessening the likelihood that these outages will occur. It is also about limiting the scope and impact of outages when they do occur, restoring power rapidly afterwards, and learning from these experiences to better deal with events in the future.

Book Power System Restoration

Download or read book Power System Restoration written by M. M. Adibi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2000-06-22 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At a time when bulk power systems operate close to their design limits, the restructuring of the electric power industry has created vulnerability to potential blackouts. Prompt and effective power system restoration is essential for the minimization of downtime and costs to the utility and its customers, which mount rapidly after a system blackout. Power System Restoration meets the complex challenges that arise from the dynamic capabilities of new technology in areas such as large-scale system analysis, communication and control, data management, artificial intelligence, and allied disciplines. It provides an up-to-date description of the restoration methodologies and implementation strategies practiced internationally. The book opens with a general overview of the restoration process and then covers: * Techniques used in restoration planning and training * Knowledge-based systems as operational aids in restoration * Issues associated with hydro and thermal power plants * High and extra-high voltage transmission systems * Restoration of distribution systems Power System Restoration is essential reading for all power system planners and operating engineers in the power industry. It is also a valuable reference for researchers, practicing power engineers, and engineering students." Sponsored by: IEEE Power Engineering Society

Download or read book Improving Project Management in the Department of Energy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-10-22 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Energy has been at the center of many of the greatest achievements in science and engineering in this century. DOE spends billions of dollars funding projects-and plans to keep on spending at this rate. But, documentation shows that DOE's construction and environmental remediation projects take much longer and cost 50% more than comparable projects undertaken by other federal agencies, calling into question DOE's procedures and project management. What are the root causes for these problems?

Book Effective Implementation of an ISO 50001 Energy Management System EnMS

Download or read book Effective Implementation of an ISO 50001 Energy Management System EnMS written by Marvin T. Howell and published by Quality Press. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You may wonder, “Why do we need ISO 50001 EnMS when we have already implemented ISO 14001 Environmental Management (EMS)?” Energy is part of an EMS. Energy is an aspect that is nonrenewable and a must for every organization to have. In ISO 14001 EMS, it is easy to focus on hazardous materials and aspects that have considerable risk in the workplace. Energy use can be easily overlooked, and even when it is considered for an objective and target (O&T), important questions such as what are the significant energy users (SEUs), what can we do to reduce their impact, and what are the variables that affect energy use are not answered. An ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) allows an organization to focus on reducing energy consumption through establishing a compelling energy policy, establishing legal and other requirements and ensuring that they are being met, and conducting a comprehensive energy review that identifies energy efficiencies, energy conservation efforts implemented, and O&Ts with energy action plans that, when achieved, moves the organization toward meeting its energy policy. For manufacturing companies, energy costs impact both the cost to produce the product and the product price. For government organizations, energy reduction is mandated by executive orders. Everyone benefits from reducing energy consumption, from the environment to the economic health of companies. ISO 50001 EnMS can be implemented by itself or with other ISO standards such as 9001, and 14001 or with OHSMS 18000. The choice is yours—–let’s make this a better place to live and work and with less cost.

Book Energy Centered Maintenance

Download or read book Energy Centered Maintenance written by Marvin T. Howell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy Centered Maintenance proves a detailed description of how to implement Energy Centered Maintenance (ECM) at any organization. It includes a new six-step technical process with detailed instructions of each of these steps explained with clear examples. Areas covered include preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance and reliability centered maintenance. ECM uses energy consumption excesses or energy waste as the primary criterion for determining specific maintenance or repair needs. Therefore, the primary purpose of this book is to provide strategies to reduce energy use by identifying equipment or items that can become energy hogs while still performing their function and prevent that from occurring. The primary reasons organizations need ECM is due to poor maintenance of energy-using systems and energy losses from motors not turning off when they should. The book includes ECM for electrical, mechanical, building transportation, HVAC, fire-fighting, water supply, drainage and storm water management systems. In some cases, ECM in data centers can help reduce energy consumption by as much as 30%. The six-step process detailed in this text will enable any organization to implement ECM in an orderly, cost effective manner thus improving your equipment and machines, lowering your energy consumption and helping save the planet.
