Book Islamism and Intelligence in South Asia

Download or read book Islamism and Intelligence in South Asia written by Prem Mahadevan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State sponsorship of terrorism is a complex and important topic in today's international affairs - and especially pertinent in the regional politics of the Middle East and South Asia, where Pakistan has long been a flashpoint of Islamist politics and terrorism. In Islamism and Intelligence in South Asia, Prem Mahadevan demonstrates how over several decades, radical Islamists, sometimes with the tacit support of parts of the military establishment, have weakened democratic governance in Pakistan and acquired progressively larger influence over policy-making. Mahadevan traces this history back to the anti-colonial Deobandi movement, which was born out of the post-partition political atmosphere and a rediscovery of the thinking of Ibn Taymiyyah, and partially ennobled the idea of `jihad' in South Asia as a righteous war against foreign oppression. Using Pakistani media and academic sources for the bulk of its raw data, and reinforcing this with scholarly analysis from Western commentators, the book tracks Pakistan's trajectory towards a `soft' Islamic revolution. Envisioned by the country's intelligence community as a solution to chronic governance failures, these narratives called for a re-orientation away from South Asia and towards the Middle East. In the process, Pakistan has become a sanctuary for Arab jihadist groups, such as Al-Qaeda, who had no previous ethnic or linguistic connection with South Asia. Most alarmingly, official discourse on terrorism has been partly silenced by the military-intelligence complex. The result is a slow drift towards extremism and possible legitimation of internationally proscribed terrorist organizations in Pakistan's electoral politics.

Book Deterrence and the New Global Security Environment

Download or read book Deterrence and the New Global Security Environment written by Ian R. Kenyon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers rigorously examines the current place of deterrence in international security relations, delivering the best of contemporary thinking. This is a special issue of the leading journal Contemporary Security Policy. It shows how and why nuclear deterrence was the central organizing mechanism for international security relations in the second half of the twentieth century. It has been replaced by a new global security environment in which the central role of deterrence, both nuclear and otherwise, appears to have diminished. The Cold War has been succeeded by a new state of play. This book will be of interest to students of military and naval history and security studies.

Book British Divide and Rule Policy and the Indian Armed Forces

Download or read book British Divide and Rule Policy and the Indian Armed Forces written by Lt Col Sube Singh Ahlawat and published by Lancer Publishers LLC. This book was released on with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature has provided defendable borders, rich resources and excellent human capital to India. The country, however, has not been able to use these assets to her advantage – kind courtesy self seeking regional ruling satraps, who have been quarreling among themselves making way for invaders and foreigners. Resultantly, there has been no strategic culture, sense of unity, history and its recording and evaluating. There has seldom been one India. Its traditions have been mostly oral and the religious texts always had greater significance and merit. British during their rule over India pillaged it and took away entire wealth and art pieces of immense valve to Britain. On getting independence, India adopted parliamentary system of governance, based on Westminster model, which without proper reforms is not suiting to Indian conditions and is further seemingly dividing us. Rather than narrowing down our diversities, it is further widening the same which is against the unity of the country. Democracy is our strength but its four basic pillars of stability and continuity of the government, its accountability, responsibility and transparency are not being secured. The book is an attempt to analyse the effects of British ‘Divide and Rule’ Policy on us all and specially our armed forces.

Book Routledge Companion to Pakistani Anglophone Writing

Download or read book Routledge Companion to Pakistani Anglophone Writing written by Aroosa Kanwal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Pakistani Anglophone Writing forms a theoretical, comprehensive, and critically astute overview of the history and future of Pakistani literature in English. Dealing with key issues for global society today, from terrorism, religious extremism, fundamentalism, corruption, and intolerance, to matters of love, hate, loss, belongingness, and identity conflicts, this Companion brings together over thirty essays by leading and emerging scholars, and presents: the transformations and continuities in Pakistani anglophone writing since its inauguration in 1947 to today; contestations and controversies that have not only informed creative writing but also subverted certain stereotypes in favour of a dynamic representation of Pakistani Muslim experiences; a case for a Pakistani canon through a critical perspective on how different writers and their works have, at different times, both consciously and unconsciously, helped to realise and extend a uniquely Pakistani idiom. Providing a comprehensive yet manageable introduction to cross-cultural relations and to historical, regional, local, and global contexts that are essential to reading Pakistani anglophone literature, The Routledge Companion to Pakistani Anglophone Writing is key reading for researchers and academics in Pakistani anglophone literature, history, and culture. It is also relevant to other disciplines such as terror studies, post-9/11 literature, gender studies, postcolonial studies, feminist studies, human rights, diaspora studies, space and mobility studies, religion, and contemporary South Asian literatures and cultures.
