Download or read book Reasonable Adults written by Robin Lefler and published by Kensington Books. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fans of Sophie Cousens and Josie Silver will love the blend of deep soul searching, laugh-out-loud humor, touching romance, and a snowy setting in this insightful story about a woman finding the next phase of her life in a totally unexpected way. The morning after a humiliating post-breakup social media post (#sponsoredbywine), Kate Rigsby learns she’s lost her marketing job along with her almost-fiancé.Worse, she realizes how little she truly cared about either. Craving a reset, Kate flees the big-city life she spent many years building—and almost as many doubting—to take a temporary gig at Treetops, a swanky, off-the-grid creative retreat in Muskoka, complete with meditation circles, deluxe spa, and artisanal cocktails. At least, that’s what the brochure promises . . . The reality is a struggling resort that’s stuck in the 1990s, fax machine included. Kate’s office is a bunker, her boss is a nightmare, and at night she shares a freezing hut with her seventy-pound Goldendoodle. Then there’s the sexy, off-limits coworker whose easy smile and lumberjack forearms are distracting Kate from the already near-impossible task of making this snowbound oasis profitable. On the upside, the surroundings are breathtaking. The Treetops crew is quirky and (mostly) kind. And somehow, Kate’s starting to feel new enthusiasm for her career—and her life. In fact, she’s daring to challenge herself in ways she never dreamed of before. With wit and heart, Reasonable Adults explores the crossroads we all face—and how a detour born of disaster can take us just where we need to go. “Reasonable Adults is smart, romantic comedy filled with madcap moments that will leave you laughing out loud. An absolute delight!” —Trish Doller, international bestselling author of The Suite Spot
Download or read book Offensive to a Reasonable Adult written by Robert Cetti and published by Robert Cettl. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly researched and fully APA referenced chronological history of film censorship and classification in Australia. Case by case histories of banned films punctuate a detailed account of the evolution of the Australian Film Classification system and the concurrent development of the Australian adult XXX industry, culminating in the establishment of the Australian Sex Party. Former SAR Research Fellow at Australia’s National Film & Sound Archive Robert Cettl gained exclusive access to both the national collection and the highly restricted Australian adult industry archive, the Eros Collection, at the Flinders University of South Australia Library to piece together the complete history of film censorship in Australia. Progressing through individual banned and censored films – including works by such internationally renowned directors as Hitchcock, Whale, Bunuel, Forman, Godard, Oshima, Pasolini, Hopper, Lyne, Breillat, Noe, Brass, Bertolucci, Fellini, Ford, Clark, Despentes, Winterbottom, Von Trier – Cettl maps out the specification of “offensive” material in parallel to the emergence of Australia’s adult XXX industry and the Christian morals-driven pressure groups that advocate tighter censorship restrictions. In a country that has the dubious honor of being the most censorial of Western democracies, film censorship is based on the principle of “offense to a reasonable adult”, an undefined refrain that religious minorities have used to manipulate censorship decisions in their favor. The history of these groups and the political support for their right-wing Christian agenda – driven by what Australians term “Wowserism” – makes Australian film censorship unique in its delineation of :the “aesthetics of offense” as grounds for the suppression of free dissemination, to the point of seeking mandatory ISP Internet filtering and Internet blacklisting of all material classified RC (or “refused classification”), much of which is available for dissemination throughout Europe and the USA, in violation of UN Human Rights Article 19. In this comprehensive study of the socio-political ideology surrounding the censorship of primarily sexually explicit material (“pornography”), Cettl delineates the aesthetic construction of “offense” as a transgressive genre and charts the morality-driven religiosity behind their construction as Other to a civilized society, questioning whether the categorization of such material as other makes of it legitimate discourse. With extensive case histories, never-before-published government censorship reports, press clippings and secret internal memos between some of Australia’s most powerful and influential politicians, Offensive to a Reasonable Adult exposes the quagmire of Australian censorship law and the morals-cabal of “wowsers” that dominate the censorship agenda in the so-called “Clever Country”.
Download or read book Reasonable Children written by Michael S. Pritchard and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public outcry for a return to moral education in our schools has raised more dust than it's dispelled. Building upon his provocative ideas in On Becoming Responsible, Michael Pritchard clears the air with a sensible plan for promoting our children's moral education through the teaching of reasonableness. Pritchard contends that children have a definite but frequently untapped capacity for reasonableness and that schools in a democratic society must make the nurturing of that capacity one of their primary aims, as fundamental to learning as the development of reading, writing, and math skills. Reasonableness itself, he shows, can be best cultivated through the practice of philosophical inquiry within a classroom community. In such an environment, children learn to work together, to listen to one another, to build on one another's ideas, to probe assumptions and different perspectives, and ultimately to think for themselves. Advocating approaches to moral education that avoid mindless indoctrination and timid relativism, Pritchard neither preaches nor hides behind abstractions. He makes liberal use of actual classroom dialogues to illustrate children's remarkable capacity to engage in reasonable conversation about moral concepts involving fairness, cheating, loyalty, truthtelling, lying, making and keeping promises, obedience, character, and responsibility. He also links such discussions to fundamental concerns over law and moral authority, the roles of teachers and parents, and the relationship between church and state. Pritchard draws broadly and deeply from the fields of philosophy and psychology, as well as from his own extensive personal experience working with children and teachers. The result is a rich and insightful work that provides real hope for the future of our children and their moral education.
Download or read book Not How I Pictured It written by Robin Lefler and published by Kensington. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sharply hilarious and ultimately heartfelt novel about a former teen superstar who grudgingly agrees to a reboot of the show that made her (in)famous… only to find herself stranded on an island with her former co-stars - and quite possibly the most useless survival group in history. For fans of Lizzy Dent, Linda Holmes, and Katherine Center. Twenty years after Ocean Views went off the air, the beloved TV show about teenage romance and angst is back. No one is more surprised than its former star, Agnes “Ness” Larkin, that she’s agreed to step back into the role of Hailey Grant. After her father/manager took off with her earnings, Ness ran away from the spotlight in shame. But maybe it’s time to stare her past, and her castmates, in their discreetly Botoxed faces. That enthusiasm lasts until the first table read, which, in co-star Coco’s words, is “like a high school reunion without the dim lighting or booze.” Ness assumed her old fling Hayes Beaumont would be too busy doing Big Hollywood Things to take part, but there he is, seated beside her, exuding pheromones and success. En route to the deluxe Bahamas resort where they’re to start filming, the cast gets stranded by a storm. Stuck on a tiny island with a paltry cache of food and quite possibly the most useless survival group in history, Ness tries to reconcile her youthful dreams with where she’s ended up—figuratively and literally. The producers wanted drama on and off-screen, and they’re going to get it, but where will Ness be when it’s all over?
Download or read book Ethics Across the Curriculum Pedagogical Perspectives written by Elaine E. Englehardt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features articles by more than twenty experienced teachers of ethics who are committed to the idea that ethics can and should be taught virtually anywhere in the education curriculum. They explore a variety of ways in which this might best be done. Traditionally confined largely to programs in philosophy and religion, the teaching of ethics has in recent decades spread across the curriculum education. The contributors to this book discuss the rationale for supporting such efforts, the variety of challenges these efforts face, and the sorts of benefits faculty and students who participate in ethics across the curriculum endeavors can expect. An overriding theme of this book is that the teaching of ethics should not be restricted to one or two courses in philosophy or religion programs, but rather be addressed wherever relevant anywhere in the curriculum. For example, accredited engineering programs are expected to ensure that their students are introduced to the ethical dimensions of engineering. This can involve consideration of ethical issues within particular areas of engineering (e.g., civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical) as distinctive segments of certain courses (e.g., those that focus on design problems), or as a full semester course in ethics in engineering. Similar approaches can be taken in nursing, medicine, law, social work, psychology, accountancy, management, and so on. That is, some emphasis on ethics can be expected to be found in broad range of academic disciplines. However, many ethical issues require careful attention from the perspectives of several disciplines at once, and in ways that require their joining hands. Recognizing that adequately addressing many ethical issues may require the inclusion of perspectives from a variety of disciplines makes apparent the need for effective communication and reflection across disciplines, not simply within them. This, in turn, suggests that faculty and their students can benefit from special programs that are designed to include participants from a variety of disciplines. Such programs will be a central feature of this book. Although some differences might arise in how such issues might best be discussed across different parts of the curriculum, these discussions might be joined in ways that help students, faculty, administrators, and the wider public better appreciate their shared ethical ground.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, at a time of high unemployment, this book provides a critical analysis of the role played by education in solving unemployment. It examines the practical, social and psychological effects of unemployment on adults and argues that formal institutional responses are inadequate within any long term perspective, and that it is rather community, informal and often unofficial initiatives that will provide learning experiences for unemployed people.

Book excerpt: D.C. Shootout On K Street is a political satire loaded with lots of sophisticated humor and even wit. It's hoped that you'll be both entertained and informed at the same time. Imagine that the gods were distracted one day and they accidentally made you the president of the United States. You wake up in the Oval Office and people are amazed. Everybody demands that you resign at once and let an experienced politician be president because you don't know how to run the country. What would you do? Could you stand up to the evil bastards and tell them to go to hell? They'd work overtime to get your ass out of the White House. You'd be called a racist, an idiot, a crook, a sex fiend, a liar. They'd slander your family, try to impeach your ass, swear you were born in Kenya, hire assassins to shoot you, enlist those Swift Boat assholes to lie about your military record, claim your college transcripts were forged, and kidnap your kid as hostages. Or are there some laws you'd like to see passed? Maybe better Social Security benefits, lower interest on student loans, Medicare for all, more taxes on the rich and fewer on the poor, no more wars, close tax loopholes, rein in Wall Street, free Jose Padilla, raise duties on China, restore our infrastructure, open more factories, etc. If you like the nook please tell others; maybe we can round up enough people for a minor rebellion and make some real changes that actually help average American s instead of the 1%ers.

Download or read book The Imaginary Domain written by Drucilla Cornell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the legal and political programme needed for the recognition of sexual difference. Cornell shows that by affirming feminine sexual difference we should rethink the traditional conception of a public/private divide. This book fundamentally alters the terrain of feminist legal and political philosophy, and does so in a prose style that is lucid and accessible. Cornell defends a feminist view of legal equality that synchronizes the distinct values of freedom and equality in the emotionally fraught sphere of life we call sex. Feminist legal theory has been plagued by the seemingly irreconcilable tension between these two values, particularly when it comes to issues like pornography and sexual harassment where they have been explicitly pitted against one another.
