Download or read book Dr Taylor of Norwich written by Geoffrey Thackray Eddy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. John Taylor rose to prominence in the mid-eighteenth century with his devastating attack on the doctrine of Original Sin. This drew fierce counterattacks from prominent Methodists such as John Wesley and Jonathan Edwards. While Wesley referred publicly to Taylor as a "great man," he believed him to be a heretic who did great damage to the Christian faith. The tendency among Methodist writers has been to follow Wesley's lead in their assessment of Taylor. However, this controversial and definitive volume, the first of its kind for over a century, reexamines this fascinating man and the controversy he began, offering a fuller and fairer account of the man behind the myth.

Download or read book The Collected Writings of Charles H Long written by Charles H. Long and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles H. Long is one of the most influential and pioneering scholars in the study of religion from the past 50 years. This is the first comprehensive collection of his writings, edited by Long himself, and contains 38 pieces, including both published and previously unpublished articles, lectures, an interview, and two book reviews. The foreword is provided by Jennifer Reid, a former student of Long. The collection is divided into four thematic parts: America and the Study of Religion; Theory and Method in the Study of Religion; African American Religion in the United States; Kindling, Embers and Sparks. Long's introduction provides much-awaited insight into his reflections on his work, expanding on questions that remained unanswered in his classic and influential text, Significations: Signs, Symbols and Images in the Interpretation of Images (1986). In particular, the new introductory essay explores the significance of “ellipses”, that which is omitted, the projected spaces of the Other in the study of religion. Considered the preeminent founder and advocate of the study of Black Religion, Long was exploring religion and colonialism and the importance of Afro-American religion as early as the 1960s and early 1970s, and this collection of his thinking – which moves across the formations of religious studies, African diasporic studies, and social and cultural theory – is a must-have addition for any institutional or personal library.
Download or read book New Dictionary Armenian English written by Matthias Bedrossian and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 819 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bedrossian's Armenian-English grammar is an essential tool for those working in classical Armenian, especially in biblical texts, for which he provides many brief citations, unsigned. The dictionary itself is an excellent example of the superb scholarship that was pursued by the Mechitarist Fathers at San Lazzaro, Venice; another example is the 1805 edition of the Bible prepared by H. Zohrapian. It was first printed at Venice, 1875-1879; reprinted in Beirut: Librairie du Liban, 1973. This reprint has been unavailable for some time. There is really no replacement for Bedrossian in the English-speaking world and its republication is most welcome.--Claude CoxMcMaster Divinity College

Download or read book Volition Rhetoric and Emotion in the Work of Pascal written by Thomas Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study identifies and analyzes a compelling theory and practice of persuasion that integrates the complexity of human desire. It demonstrates how the philosophical component in Pascal's description of the will makes a seamless integration into a vehicle of persuasion and poetics, providing a privileged viewpoint for understanding the author's complete works, arguing that the notion of will is of fundamental importance in Pascal's anthropology as well as in his rhetoric. This avenue of interpretation is both fruitful and difficult, because the word "volonte" means very different things in Pascal and in modern French. Beginning by contextualizing the notion of 'volonte' and explaining its expanded use in the seventeenth-century lexicon, the author then endeavors to show that Pascal borrows an essentially Augustinian paradigm of desire to create a depiction of the will divided against itself, surreptitiously yearning for what its bearer does not want.
Download or read book Nietzsche s Corps e written by Geoff Waite and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appearing between two historical touchstones--the alleged end of communism and the 100th anniversary of Nietzsche's death--this book offers a provocative hypothesis about the philosopher's afterlife and the fate of leftist thought and culture. At issue is the relation of the dead Nietzsche (corpse) and his written work (corpus) to subsequent living Nietzscheanism across the political spectrum, but primarily among a leftist corps that has been programmed and manipulated by concealed dimensions of the philosopher's thought. If anyone is responsible for what Geoff Waite maintains is the illusory death of communism, it is Nietzsche, the man and concept. Waite advances his argument by bringing Marxist--especially Gramscian and Althusserian--theories to bear on the concept of Nietzsche/anism. But he also goes beyond ideological convictions to explore the vast Nietzschean influence that proliferates throughout the marketplace of contemporary philosophy, political and literary theory, and cultural and technocultural criticism. In light of a philological reconstruction of Nietzsche's published and unpublished texts, Nietzsche's Corps/e shuttles between philosophy and everyday popular culture and shows them to be equally significant in their having been influenced by Nietzsche--in however distorted a form and in a way that compromises all of our best interests. Controversial in its "decelebration" of Nietzsche, this remarkable study asks whether the postcontemporary age already upon us will continue to be dominated and oriented by the haunting spectre of Nietzsche's corps/e. Philosophers, intellectual historians, literary theorists, and those interested in western Marxism, popular culture, Friedrich Nietzsche, and the intersection of French and German thought will find this book both appealing and challenging.

Download or read book Being and Freedom written by John Skorupski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Being and Freedom is an account of ethics in Europe from the French Revolution: a phase of philosophical ethics whose influence ran far beyond philosophy, eventually dominating politics and religion in the West. Developments came from France, Germany, and Britain. This book is currently the only study that treats them together as a Europe-wide phenomenon. The first chapter covers the philosophical conflict at the heart of the French Revolution, between the individualism of the Enlightenment and two very different forms of holistic ethics: the old regime's ethic of service and the radical-democracy of the Rousseauian left. Responses analysing modern freedom and democracy came from a series of French liberal thinkers. In Germany the reaction was to two revolutions seen as inaugurating modernity--the political revolution in France and the philosophical revolution of Kant. Here the fate of religion was critical; with it the metaphysics of being and freedom. The story is traced from Kant to Hegel's idealist version of ethical holism. In Britain, Enlightenment naturalism remained the prevailing framework. It took different forms: 'common sense' and the theory of the sentiments in Scotland, utilitarianism in England. From these elements came a synthesis of European themes by John Stuart Mill--comparable in range but opposed to that of Hegel. This period's ethical ideas remain the core of late modern ethics and the contested ground on which ethical disagreements take place today. The final chapter is a retrospective and assessment"--Publisher's description.
