Book The Real and Virtual Worlds of Spatial Planning

Download or read book The Real and Virtual Worlds of Spatial Planning written by Martina Koll-Schretzenmayr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Real and Virtual Worlds of Spatial Planning brings together contributions from leaders in landscape, transportation, and urban planning. They present case studies - from North America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa - that ground the exploration of ideas in the realities of sustainable urban and regional planning, landscape planning and present the prospects for using virtual worlds for modeling spatial environments and their application in planning. The first part explores the challenges for planning in the real world that are caused by the dynamics of socio-spatial systems as well as by the contradictions of their evolutionary trends related to their spatial layout. The second part presents diverse concepts to model, analyze, visualize, monitor and control socio-spatial systems by using virtual worlds

Book Agriculture in the City s Countryside

Download or read book Agriculture in the City s Countryside written by C. R. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Agriculture and urbanisation are often considered to be mutually antagonistic land-uses. But in an increasingly urban-orientated world, agriculture depends on city markets and often has to operate within the complex mosaic of the urban fringe." "This book provides a broad analysis of the nature, structure and relationships of farming in the countryside surrounding cities. From the perspective of resource management and land use planning, the authors explore the biophysical and human dimensions of the organisation of periurban agriculture and identify four main elements around which they present their analysis, the resource base, the market, the farmer, and the role of government." "Bryant and Johnston use case study material mainly from the developed world to demonstrate how conflicts and problems can be resolved to the benefit of farmer and city-dweller. By applying systems theory, they provide a synthesis for understanding how modern agriculture functions under urban influence and how these trends are likely to develop in the future, in the context of conservation, economic factors and technological change." "An essential and stimulating study of a key issue, this book will appeal to students and researchers in urban studies, rural geography, agricultural economics, land-use studies and planning."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book An Introduction to Spatial Planning in the Netherlands

Download or read book An Introduction to Spatial Planning in the Netherlands written by Patrick Witte and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-13 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to spatial planning in the Netherlands. It explores the academic underpinnings of the discipline and its practical implications, making use of insights on planning practices from the Netherlands. As an academic book with relevance for spatial planning teaching and practice, the relation between planning practice and planning as an academic discipline are discussed. A key analytical concept is introduced to discuss the different dimensions of planning: the planning triangle. This framework helps to bridge the strategic and conceptual elements of planning with its realization. The object, process, and context of planning and its relations are discussed. The core of the academic discipline and profession of spatial planning entails looking (far) into the future, stimulating discussion, formulating a desired future direction through an informal and collective planning process, and then formalizing and placing current action into that future perspective. In that sense, spatial planning can be understood as the strategic organization of hopes and expectations. As a study book it is suitable for students of planning at various universities, but also for students in higher professional education. For those involved in the professional field of spatial planning, this book offers a sound foundation.

Book Private Forestry Policy in Western Europe

Download or read book Private Forestry Policy in Western Europe written by Arnold John Grayson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private ownership is the main form of tenure of woodlands and forests in Britain and Western Europe. Recent changes in legislation in the UK concerning financial aspects of forest ownership, plus the advent of the single European market, are likely to increase the interest of foreign investment in afforestation. Against this background the Scottish Forestry Trust commissioned a study to examine policies for private forestry across Western Europe. This book is an outcome of this study, which had four main purposes: to describe policy towards private forestry in several European countries; to identify methods of policy formulation and trends in the content and balance of objectives for such policies; to describe methods of implementing policy and quantify the financial implications; and to suggest changes in implementation methods that might be appropriate to Britain. The book is of interest to academics and practitioners concerned with forestry, from the perspectives of economics, policy-making, planning or investment.

Book The Development of an Integrated Planning and Decision Support System IPDSS for Land Consolidation

Download or read book The Development of an Integrated Planning and Decision Support System IPDSS for Land Consolidation written by Demetris Demetriou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an extensive review of three interrelated issues: land fragmentation, land consolidation, and land reallocation, and it presents in detail the theoretical background, design, development and application of a prototype integrated planning and decision support system for land consolidation. The system integrates geographic information systems (GIS) and artificial intelligence techniques including expert systems (ES) and genetic algorithms (GAs) with multi-criteria decision methods (MCDM), both multi-attribute (MADM) and multi-objective (MODM). The system is based on four modules for measuring land fragmentation; automatically generating alternative land redistribution plans; evaluating those plans; and automatically designing the land partitioning plan. The presented research provides a new scientific framework for land-consolidation planning both in terms of theory and practice, by presenting new findings and by developing better tools and methods embedded in an integrated GIS environment. It also makes a valuable contribution to the fields of GIS and spatial planning, as it provides new methods and ideas that could be applied to improve the former for the benefit of the latter in the context of planning support systems. “From the 1960s, ambitious research activities set out to observe regarding IT-support of the complex and time consuming redistribution processes within land consolidation – without any practically relevant results, until now. This scientific work is likely to close that gap. This distinguished publication is highly recommended to land consolidation planning experts, researchers and academics alike.” – Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Thomas, Münster/ Germany "Planning support systems take new scientific tools based on GIS, optimisation and simulation and use these to inform the process of plan-making and policy. This book is one of the first to show how this can be consistently done and it is a triumph of demonstrating how such systems can be made operational. Essential reading for planners, analysts and GI scientists." – Prof. Michael Batty, University College London
