Book Selected Works of C C Heyde

Download or read book Selected Works of C C Heyde written by Ross Maller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-17 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1945, very early in the history of the development of a rigorous analytical theory of probability, Feller (1945) wrote a paper called “The fundamental limit theorems in probability” in which he set out what he considered to be “the two most important limit theorems in the modern theory of probability: the central limit theorem and the recently discovered ... ‘Kolmogoroff’s cel ebrated law of the iterated logarithm’ ”. A little later in the article he added to these, via a charming description, the “little brother (of the central limit theo rem), the weak law of large numbers”, and also the strong law of large num bers, which he considers as a close relative of the law of the iterated logarithm. Feller might well have added to these also the beautiful and highly applicable results of renewal theory, which at the time he himself together with eminent colleagues were vigorously producing. Feller’s introductory remarks include the visionary: “The history of probability shows that our problems must be treated in their greatest generality: only in this way can we hope to discover the most natural tools and to open channels for new progress. This remark leads naturally to that characteristic of our theory which makes it attractive beyond its importance for various applications: a combination of an amazing generality with algebraic precision.

Book Perspectives on the New Economics and Regulation of Telecommunications

Download or read book Perspectives on the New Economics and Regulation of Telecommunications written by Institute for Research on Public Policy and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1996 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a compilation of papers reflecting many of the issues related to telecommunications that are being debated today and are likely to continue to be addressed in the next few years. The papers examine the ways in which economic and technological forces are changing the regulation of telecommunications and the characteristics of the industry itself. After an introduction on issues such as the information highway, industry consolidation, market integration, and constraints on new policies, the papers cover such topics as the changes in Canadian telecommunications and their economics, the role of telecommunications in productivity and competition, the business network concept as an alternative governance structure, competition policy, convergence of technologies, separation of infrastructure from services, European telecommunications policy, and the historical context in which Canada has handled earlier transformations of a technological nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic transformations are the heart of synthetic organic chemistry. The Compendium of Organic Synthetic Methods series facilitates the search for the most useful functional group transformations in organic chemistry. Compendium of Organic Synthetic Methods, Volume 9, provides quick access to proven protocols for the newest, most useful reactions and transformations. It contains both functional group transformations and bond-forming reactions, and focuses on the use of reagents readily available or easily prepared and handled in the laboratory. This valuable desktop resource contains over 1,200 examples of published reactions for the preparation of monofunctional compounds in a handy reference, as well as over 800 examples of difunctional compounds, and features over 30 more reviews than Volume 8. As in all the previous Compendium volumes, the classification schemes used allow for quick and easy reference and information retrieval. Chemical transformations are classified by the reacting functional group of the starting material and then by the functional group formed. Helpful indices are provided for both monofunctional and difunctional compounds as an efficient means of guidance to specific classes of transformations. Compendium of Organic Synthetic Methods, Volume 9, is an unparalleled source of information on the methods, reactions, and transformations in contemporary organic chemistry for the working chemist and student. Volume 9 in the series originated by I. T. Harrison and S. Harrison
