Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All life came from sea but all robots were born on land. The vast majority of both industrial and mobile robots operate on land, since the technology to allow them to operate in and under the ocean has only become available in recent years. A number of complex issues due to the unstructured, hazardous undersea environment, makes it difficult to travel in the ocean while today's technologies allow humans to land on the moon and robots to travel to Mars . . Clearly, the obstacles to allowing robots to operate in a saline, aqueous, and pressurized environment are formidable. Mobile robots operating on land work under nearly constant atmospheric pressure; their legs (or wheels or tracks) can operate on a firm footing; their bearings are not subjected to moisture and corrosion; they can use simple visual sensing and be observed by their creators working in simple environments. In contrast, consider the environment where undersea robots must operate. The pressure they are subjected to can be enormous, thus requiring extremely rugged designs. The deep oceans range between 19,000 to 36,000 ft. At a mere 33-foot depth, the pressure will be twice the normal one atmosphere pressure of 29. 4 psi. The chemical environment of the sea is highly corrosive, thus requiring the use of special materials. Lubrication of moving parts in water is also difficult, and may require special sealed, waterproof joints.

Book Computational and Physical Experiments on Autonomous Underwater Object Detection with Low cost Imaging Sonar and Computer Graphics Simulations

Download or read book Computational and Physical Experiments on Autonomous Underwater Object Detection with Low cost Imaging Sonar and Computer Graphics Simulations written by Ruoyao Qin and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: detection algorithm is implemented using the synthetic sonar images generated from a computer graphics tool in Unreal Engine. The trained object detection algorithm is tested with realistic sonar images that are generated from a physics-based simulation in order to analyze the transfer learning performance. In addition, the presented object detection algorithm is also tested with real side-scan sonar images obtained from a low-cost fish finder, which is equipped on a sonar boat being towed by a drone. The experimental results show that various pre-processing processes can improve transfer learning performance significantly.

Book AWF YOLO enhanced underwater object detection with adaptive weighted feature pyramid network

Download or read book AWF YOLO enhanced underwater object detection with adaptive weighted feature pyramid network written by Qianren Guo and published by OAE Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underwater scenarios are influenced by various factors such as light attenuation, scattering, and absorption, which degrade the quality of images and pose significant challenges for underwater object detection in marine research and ocean engineering. To address these challenges, we propose a novel adaptive-weight feature detection framework based on YOLOv8, called AWF-YOLO, designed to detect objects in turbid underwater scenarios accurately. AWF-YOLO incorporates several key components to improve detection performance. Firstly, a novel adaptive-weight feature pyramid network is introduced to facilitate the fusion of multi-scale feature semantics. In addition, an adaptive-weight feature extraction module is proposed to enhance underwater object detection by capturing relevant and discriminative information to enhance feature extraction further. We integrate a dedicated small object detection head into the detection network to overcome the challenges associated with detecting small objects in complex underwater scenarios. This component focuses on effectively identifying and localizing small objects, leading to improved overall detection accuracy. Extensive experiments conducted on the detection underwater objects dataset demonstrate that the proposed AWF-YOLO achieves significant performance improvements, thus making it highly suitable for complex and dynamic underwater scenarios.

Book Automated Detection and Classification in High resolution Sonar Imagery for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Operations

Download or read book Automated Detection and Classification in High resolution Sonar Imagery for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Operations written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are increasingly being used by military forces to acquire high-resolution sonar imagery, in order to detect mines and other objects of interest on the seabed. Automatic detection and classification techniques are being developed for several reasons: to provide reliable and consistent detection of objects on the seabed; to free human analysts from time-consuming and tedious detection tasks; and to enable autonomous in-field decision-making based on observations of mines and other objects. This document reviews progress in the development of automated detection and classification techniques for side-looking sonars mounted on AUVs. Whilst the techniques have not yet reached maturity, considerable progress has been made in both unsupervised and supervised (trained) algorithms for feature detection and classification. In some cases, the performance and reliability of automated detection systems exceed those of human operators.
