Book Development of an Improved On line Voltage Stability Index Using Synchronized Phasor Measurement

Download or read book Development of an Improved On line Voltage Stability Index Using Synchronized Phasor Measurement written by Yanfeng Gong and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent events, such as the Northeast Blackout of 2003, have highlighted the need for accurate real-time stability assessment techniques to detect when an electric power system is on the brink of voltage collapse. While many techniques exist, most techniques are computationally demanding and cannot be used in an on-line application. A voltage stability index (VSI) can be designed to estimate the distance of the current operating point to the voltage marginally stable point during the system operation. In this research work, a new VSI was developed that not only can detect the system voltage marginally stable point but also is computationally efficient for on-line applications. Starting with deriving a method to predict three types of maximum transferable power of a single source power system, the new VSI is based on the three calculated load margins. In order to apply the VSI to large power systems, a method has been developed to simplify the large network behind a load bus into a single source and a single transmission line given the synchronized phasor measurements of the power system variables and network parameters. The simplified system model, to which the developed VSI can be applied, preserves the power flow and the voltage of the particular load bus. The proposed voltage stability assessment method, therefore, provides a VSI of each individual load bus and can identify the load bus that is the most vulnerable to voltage collapse. Finally, the new VSI was tested on three power systems. Results from these three test cases provided validation of the applicability and accuracy of the proposed VSI.

Book Synchronized Phasor Measurements and Their Applications

Download or read book Synchronized Phasor Measurements and Their Applications written by Arun G. Phadke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-21 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book builds on the cutting edge research presented in the previous edition that was the first of its kind to present the technology behind an emerging power systems management tool still in the early stages of commercial roll-out. In the intervening years, synchrophasors have become a crucial and widely adopted tool in the battle against electricity grid failures around the world. Still the most accurate wide area measurement (WAMS) technology for power systems, synchronized phasor measurements have become increasingly sophisticated and useful for system monitoring, as the advent of big data storage allows for more nuanced real-time analysis, allowing operators to predict, prevent and mitigate the impacts of blackouts with enhanced accuracy and effectiveness. This new edition continues to provide the most encompassing overview of the technology from its pioneers, and has been expanded and updated to include all the applications and optimizations of the last decade.

Book A Study on Wide area Measurement based Approaches for Power System Voltage Stability

Download or read book A Study on Wide area Measurement based Approaches for Power System Voltage Stability written by Haoyu Yuan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the development of wide-area monitoring system (WAMS) enabled by the synchrophasor technology, measurement-based approaches for power system voltage stability and control have been widely discussed in recent years. Based on high-frequency synchronized measurement signals collected from phasor measurement units (PMUs), these approaches have great potentials to significantly improve the situational awareness and to effectively guide the controls of interconnected modern power systems. If compared with conventional model-based voltage stability assessment (VSA) and control methods, the measurement-based methods are relatively new. Although their simplicity and independence of system models make them suitable for online deployment, the applications of these measurement-based methods are not as well explored as their model-based counterparts, which have been improved and matured over several decades. Therefore, the motivation of this dissertation is to explore new applications of measurement-based voltage stability assessment and control. In this dissertation, first, a comparative study on existing measurement-based approaches is provided; second, a hybrid VSA approach for N-1 contingency is proposed; third, measurement-based wide-area loading margin sensitivity suitable for voltage stability control is presented with a sample control study; fourth, mitigation approaches for overestimation of voltage stability margin when using coupled single-port circuit are proposed; and fifth, voltage dependent load model is integrated into measurement-based voltage stability analysis to provide a practical and accurate assessment of voltage stability margin.

Book Voltage Stability Assessment and Control Based on Synchrophasor Measurements in Ambient Condition

Download or read book Voltage Stability Assessment and Control Based on Synchrophasor Measurements in Ambient Condition written by Sayed Mohammad Amelian and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voltage stability assessment and control are among the top priority tasks for electric utilities and power system operators. Failure in performing these correctly, has resulted in some of the major blackouts over the past few decades. Continuous loading increase on system infrastructure, higher reliability and security requirements, as well as progressive renewable resource integration, incapable of guaranteeing sustained reactive support, have all made this function more complex, and yet more crucial.Traditionally, developed algorithms for calculating voltage stability margin and recommending the necessary control action, rely on complete and accurate system models, as well as extensive offline studies. Investigating previous incidents has proved this to be a challenging goal to achieve. At the same time, integration of high-sampling measurement devices such as synchrophasors, powerful processors, and fast communication have resulted in increased situational awareness and monitoring quality of the system behavior. As a result, there is high interest today, to develop measurement-based real-time tools for determining system status from stability point of view and deduce the optimal control actions in critical conditions. In this dissertation, accurate modeling of the power system ambient data, corresponding to its operation at quasi steady-state condition is discussed, and the difference between system's steady-state response and power flow solutions is investigated. Based on this clarification, a new distributed model-free algorithm is proposed for voltage stability assessment and control of a power system, based on steady-state Q-V sensitivity of system buses. This is realized through subspace system identification from input-output response based on ambient measurements. Once the sensitivities are known, system proximity to voltage instability can be determined using the minimum sensitivity, rank system buses according to their stability margin and the need for corrective control actions, and determine the optimal set of actions needed to bring system operation point back to a secure state. To pursue the latter, two optimization approaches with different objectives based on various operating policies are introduced towards finding the best local control action within a substation. Finally, an index is introduced to determine vulnerability of the system to voltage instability caused by limitation on a generator's reactive power.
