Book Responsible Design in Applied Linguistics Theory and Practice

Download or read book Responsible Design in Applied Linguistics Theory and Practice written by Albert Weideman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No mere history of applied linguistics, this volume presents a framework for interpreting the development of applied linguistics as a discipline. It offers a systematic account of how applied linguistics has developed, articulating the philosophical premises that have informed both its emergence and its subsequent growth. It asks questions that are seldom asked: Where does the discipline derive from? Where is it heading? What directions has it already taken? Which direction should it embrace in future? What is the relative worth of all of the variation in design and methods that have been developed by applied linguists? In defining applied linguistics as a discipline of design, it takes us beyond the diffuse and sometimes contradictory conventional definitions of the field. The framework of design principles it proposes not only helps to explain the historical development of applied linguistics, but also provides a potential justification for solutions to language problems. It presents us with nothing less than an emerging theory of applied linguistics.

Book Life in a New Language

Download or read book Life in a New Language written by Distinguished Professor of Applied Linguistics Ingrid Piller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration and the social diversity it creates constitute one of the key global challenges of the early 21st century. Language and communication barriers can compromise equitable access in diverse societies, and where socioeconomic disadvantage becomes entrenched, it poses risks to security, productivity and quality of life. Clearly this is an important issue, and migrants and their language choices are heavily politicized; though political and media debates often rely on anecdotal conjecture or are ill-informed. Life in a New Language examines the language learning and settlement experiences of 130 migrants to Australia from 34 different countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America over a period of 20 years. Reusing data shared from six separate sociolinguistic ethnographies, the book illuminates participants' lived experience of learning and communicating in a new language, finding work, and doing family. Additionally, participants' experiences with racism and identity making in a new context are explored. The research uncovers significant hardship but also migrants' courage and resilience. The book has implications for language service provision, migration policy, open science, and social justice movements.

Book Addressing Issues of Learner Diversity in English Language Education

Download or read book Addressing Issues of Learner Diversity in English Language Education written by Tran, Thao Quoc and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the dynamic context of English language education, learners bring many differences in identity, motivation, engagement, ability, and more. Addressing Issues of Learner Diversity in English Language Education recognizes that traditional, one-size-fits-all approaches to language education are insufficient in meeting the needs of a varied and global learner population. It grapples with effectively teaching English to individuals with diverse linguistic backgrounds, learning styles, and cultural contexts. The challenges range from learner autonomy and motivation issues to navigating mixed-level classes and integrating technology into language teaching. Drawing on current research trends and cutting-edge methodologies, this book captures the diverse voices of contributors from various ESL/EFL settings, offering context-specific solutions to the myriad challenges faced in language education. The book illuminates the nuanced phenomena within English language education; it showcases innovative theoretical frameworks and up-to-date research findings. By addressing learners as singular individuals and collectives, the publication guides educators in enhancing individual competencies and maximizing the potential of each learner.
