Book The 100 Greatest Bands of All Time 2 volumes

Download or read book The 100 Greatest Bands of All Time 2 volumes written by David V. Moskowitz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind reference investigates the music and the musicians that set the popular trends of the last half century in America. Many rock fans have, at one time or another, ranked their favorite artists in order of talent, charisma, and musical influence on the world as they see it. In this same spirit, author and music historian David V. Moskowitz expands on the concept of "top ten" lists to provide a lineup of the best 100 musical groups from the past 60 years. Since the chosen bands are based on the author's personal taste, this two-volume set provokes discussion of which performers are included and why, offering insights into the surprising influences behind them. From the Everly Brothers, to the Ramones, to Public Enemy, the work covers a wide variety of styles and genres, clearly illustrating the connections between them. Entries focus on the group's history, touring, membership, major releases, selected discography, bibliography, and influence. Contributions from leading scholars in popular music shed light on derivative artists and underscore the overall impact of the performers on the music industry.

Book Africa s Football Legends

Download or read book Africa s Football Legends written by Okyere Bonna Mba and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of African talent in European Football. In fact, a definitive list of the continent´s finest players in England´s top flight alone, for example, is extremely difficult to compile. Considering that talents such as Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Kolo Toure, Benni McCarthy, El-Hadji Diouf and Yakubu are all regularly on display week-in, week-out, African football fans have a multitude of riches to admire. Notwithstanding, Africa’s main concern must be towards capturing the coveted FIFA World Cup. THE BIG QUESTION IS: If Africa were that good in football why are they not showing it at the FIFA World Cup? So far no African team (country) has gone beyond the FIFA World Cup quarter final. Ghana and Cameroon have shown class at one time and once made it to the 8th stage though. Senegal and Nigeria have also once made it past the first 16th stage. No doubt, Africa has the football talents; let’s pray and hope her officials live up to the challenge in shaping their national team’s spirit to tangible results. Just getting to the 16th stage is not good enough for the euphoria. Africa can do better than merely showing up. I predict a great showing in South Africa 2010, at least to 8th stage, (the semi-finals) and winning in Brazil in 2014. The question then is: Which African country is ready to meet this challenge? The truth of the matter is any of the African teams is capable. This book looks at the history of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and goes on to feature Africa’s great footballers Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

Book JUSUP MAMAY MASTER PERFORMER OF THE KIRGHIZ MANAS EPIC

Download or read book JUSUP MAMAY MASTER PERFORMER OF THE KIRGHIZ MANAS EPIC written by Adil Jumaturdu and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zhenhui Liang, Weiguo Chen and Xu Zhang have done a great service to the study of oral epic poetry by translating Adil Jumaturdu’s and Tokon Isak’s detailed and comprehensive biography of Jusup Mamay (1918-2014), the great Kirghiz epic singer from Xinjiang. In this book, the reader learns how this “singer of tales” acquired his impressively large epic repertoire and becomes acquainted with the Kirghiz tradition of the Manas epic and epic cycle, in particular Jusup Mamay’s version, which comprises eight generations. The authors, native Kirghiz from Xinjiang, have had close contact with the singer over many years and offer unique insights into the mind and art of an exceptional epic singer-narrator. ---- Professor Karl Reichl (studying oral epic poetry at Bonn University) The Kirghiz heroic epic Manas boasts a history of around one thousand years. In the process of its development, generation after generation of singers have passed it down today by oral tradition. Jusup Mamay, one of the epic’s master singers, or manaschi, is renowned as the only performer in the world who was able to narrate eight generations of heroes from a single Kirghiz family, the epic’s namesake Manas chief among them. After years of surveys and interviews, the authors have assembled first-hand materials about Jusup Mamay to write a critical biography detailing the singer’s monumental talents and his great efforts in learning Manas. The biography elaborates on Jusup Mamay’s geographical and cultural environment, his apprenticeships under master manaschi, his passion for learning around 230,000-line epic by heart, his two marriages, his family, the features of his unique version of Manas, his many contributions to the inheritance of Kirghiz folk culture, and his influence both within his native China and across the globe. This book is a valuable contribution to the academic literature about the Manas epic and Kirghiz culture as well.

Book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19

Download or read book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19 written by Melanie Nolan and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 19 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB) contains concise biographies of individuals who died between 1991 and 1995. The first of two volumes for the 1990s, it presents a colourful montage of late twentieth-century Australian life, containing the biographies of significant and representative Australians. The volume is still in the shadow of World War II with servicemen and women who enlisted young appearing, but these influences are dimming and there are now increasing numbers of non-white, non-male, non-privileged and non-straight subjects. The 680 individuals recorded in volume 19 of the ADB include Wiradjuri midwife and Ngunnawal Elder Violet Bulger; Aboriginal rights activist, poet, playwright and artist Kevin Gilbert; and Torres Strait Islander community leader and land rights campaigner Eddie Mabo. HIV/AIDS child activists Tony Lovegrove and Eve Van Grafhorst have entries, as does conductor Stuart Challender, ‘the first Australian celebrity to go public’ about his HIV/AIDS condition in 1991. The arts are, as always, well-represented, including writers Frank Hardy, Mary Durack and Nene Gare, actors Frank Thring and Leonard Teale and arts patron Ian Potter. We are beginning to see the effects of the steep rise in postwar immigration flow through to the ADB. Artist Joseph Stanislaw Ostoja-Kotkowski was born in Poland. Pilar Moreno de Otaegui, co-founded the Spanish Club of Sydney. Chinese restaurateur and community leader Ming Poon (Dick) Low migrated to Victoria in 1953. Often we have a dearth of information about the domestic lives of our subjects; politician Olive Zakharov, however, bravely disclosed at the Victorian launch of the federal government’s campaign to Stop Violence Against Women in 1993 that she was a survivor of domestic violence in her second marriage. Take a dip into the many fascinating lives of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
