Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals and men are affected by their experiences. Experiences. therefore, must produce changes within the organism presumably in its nervous system. The studies in this volume are concerned with the nature of these changes. The selections in Part I deal with the problem of when the changes occur and when they become relatively permanent. The papers in Part II ask what is the nature of the changes. The third set of selections deals with the problem of where the changes occur. The papers in Part IV illustrate several electrophysiological approaches to learning and memory.

Book Visual Agnosia second edition

Download or read book Visual Agnosia second edition written by Martha J. Farah and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-04-09 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cognitive neuroscience of human vision draws on two kinds of evidence: functional imaging of normal subjects and the study of neurological patients with visual disorders. Martha Farah's landmark 1990 book Visual Agnosia presented the first comprehensive analysis of disorders of visual recognition within the framework of cognitive neuroscience, and remains the authoritative work on the subject. This long-awaited second edition provides a reorganized and updated review of the visual agnosias, incorporating the latest research on patients with insights from the functional neuroimaging literature. Visual agnosia refers to a multitude of different disorders and syndromes, fascinating in their own right and valuable for what they can tell us about normal human vision. Some patients cannot recognize faces but can still recognize other objects, while others retain only face recognition. Some see only one object at a time; others can see multiple objects but recognize only one at a time. Some do not consciously perceive the orientation of an object but nevertheless reach for it with perfected oriented grasp; others do not consciously recognize a face as familiar but nevertheless respond to it autonomically. Each disorder is illustrated with a clinical vignette, followed by a thorough review of the case report literature and a discussion of the theoretical implications of the disorder for cognitive neuroscience. The second edition extends the range of disorders covered to include disorders of topographic recognition, and both general and selective disorders of semantic memory, as well as expanded coverage of face recognition impairments. Also included are a discussion of the complementary roles of imaging and patient-based research in cognitive neuroscience, and a final integrative chapter presenting the "big picture" of object recognition as illuminated by agnosia research.

Book Encyclopedia of Perception

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Perception written by E. Bruce Goldstein and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010 with total page 1281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the ease with which we perceive, many people see perception as something that "just happens." However, even seemingly simple perceptual experiences involve complex underlying mechanisms, which are often hidden from our conscious experience. These mechanisms are being investigated by researchers and theorists in fields such as psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, and philosophy. A few examples of the questions posed by these investigations are, What do infants perceive? How does perception develop? What do perceptual disorders reveal about normal functioning? How can information from one sense, such as hearing, be affected by information from another sense, such as vision? How is the information from all of our senses combined to result in our perception of a coherent environment? What are some practical outcomes of basic research in perception? These are just a few of the questions this encyclopedia will consider, as it presents a comprehensive overview of the field of perception for students, researchers, and professionals in psychology, the cognitive sciences, neuroscience, and related medical disciplines such as neurology and ophthalmology.

Book Human Cognitive Neuropsychology Classic Edition

Download or read book Human Cognitive Neuropsychology Classic Edition written by Andrew W. Ellis and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive neuropsychology seeks to understand impairments of specific cognitive functions in relation to a model of normal cognitive processing. The conclusions drawn from the study of abnormal processes are in turn used in the development and testing of theories of normal cognition. First published in 1988, this seminal book represented an attempt to synthesize and systematize progress in the study of cognitive neuropsychology and therefore provides an important snapshot of the field at the time. In addition to reviewing different forms of impairment and discussing their implications for theories of normal function, this book also examines the empirical and theoretical foundations of the subject including the use of single-case studies and the assumptions that must be made about the mind and brain. This classic edition marks 25 years in print, and includes a brand new introduction written by the authors, Ellis and Young. The Augmented Edition of Human Cognitive Neuropsychology published in 1997 is also still available. This classic edition will be important reading for students of cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology.
