Book Reading in the Great War 1914 1916

Download or read book Reading in the Great War 1914 1916 written by David Bilton and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the experience of war impacted on the town, from the initial enthusiasm for sorting out the German kaiser in time for Christmas 1914, to the gradual realization of the enormity of human sacrifice the families of Reading were committed to as the war stretched out over the next four years. A record of the growing disillusion of the people, their tragedies and hardships and a determination to see it through. Reading's experiences during the Great War can be taken as standing for the many smaller but important towns in the country whose story will never be told. However, being a county town it experienced both industrial and agrarian pressures that deeply affected its population. Initially enthusiastic about the war, recruitment soon dropped and the local regiment filled with men from the big cities. By 1916 most of the eligible men were keen to find ways to stay out of the army. In the centre of the town was the infamous Reading jail home to Irish dissidents, terrorists and POWs. On the surface it was a calm town that got on with its business: beer, biscuits, metalwork, seeds and armaments but its poverty impacted on industrial relations leading to strikes. It also had a darker side with child cruelty and death, especially suicide.

Book The Day of Wrath

Download or read book The Day of Wrath written by Louis Tracy and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Louis Tracy was originally published in 1916 and we are now republishing it as part of our WWI Centenary Series. 'The Day of Wrath: A Story of 1914' is a novel about the horrors of the first year of the Great War. The New York Times Book Review published this critique of the work: "The Human mind is so constituted that it becomes deadened by the weight of numbers, needing the personal, the individual, to awaken its liveliest sympathies. We read with pity and horror of the sufferings of a nation; but that they may be brought really home to us, become really vivid and forceful, they must be embodied in some person or small group of persons. And it is something of this embodiment which Mr. Tracy has achieved in his latest book, The Day of Wrath. We have all read of burned villages, murdered noncombatants, tortured women-all the horror and agony undergone by heroic Belgium in the cruel days of August and September, 1914. Mr. Tracy takes a little company of six people, two of them English, the others Belgium, and shows us what happens to them during that awful time." This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Each publication also includes brand new introductory essays and a timeline to help the reader place the work in its historical context."

Download or read book 100 Days to Victory How the Great War Was Fought and Won 1914 1918 written by Saul David and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saul David's 100 DAYS TO VICTORY is a totally original, utterly engaging account of the Great War - the first book to tell the story of the 'war to end all wars' through the events of one hundred key days between 1914 and 1918. 100 DAYS TO VICTORY is a 360 degree portrait of a global conflict that stretched east from the shores of Britain to the marshes of Iraq, and south from the forests of Russia to the bush of German South East Africa. Throughout his gripping narrative we hear the voices of men and women both eminent and ordinary, some who were spectators on the Home Front, others - including Saul David's own family - who were deeply embroiled in epic battles that changed the world forever. 100 DAYS TO VICTORY is the work of a great historian and supreme story teller. Most importantly, it is also an enthralling tribute to a generation whose sacrifice should never be forgotten.
