Successful Black students in urban settings are influenced by their home environment, parent-child interactions, and home-to school connections. This is especially true for Black males. When parents are intimately involved in their child's schooling by staying knowledgeable, encouraging and demonstrating the importance of reading, a child's success in school is inevitable (Edwards, 2004). This study focuses on the significance of home literacy attitudes, behaviors, and practices that impact the reading scores of Black boys in third, fourth and fifth grades at three elementary schools in the St. Louis Public School District. The research design is an Explanatory Sequential Quasi-Mixed Methods- Multi-Strand (Teddlie & Tashakkori, 2006) which is used to explore the relationship between family home literacy behaviors, practices and attitudes and the reading achievement of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Black boys. Their reading scores from the Missouri Assessment Program (M.A.P.) and Standardized Test for the Assessment of Reading (S.T.A.R.) were analyzed and correlated to responses given by their parents on a parent questionnaire. M.A.P. and S.T.A.R. reading assessment results reveal that few boys included in the current study read at proficient levels; the majority of these boys read at the basic or below basic levels. The findings from this research indicate there is a relationship between parents who create a home literacy environment and the reading scores for third, fourth and fifth grade Black boys. The reading scores analyzed in this study indicate few significant correlations to the home literacy environment; however, the majority of the Black boys' reading scores are below proficient levels. There is a relationship between the home literacy environment and the reading scores; however, the practices are not consistent enough to yield a significant correlation.

Children with low exposure to reading can experience reading difficulties, diminished cognitive development, and poor academic outcomes. Inconsistency in the conceptualization of early literacy has hampered research and development of successful, translational early literacy interventions, particularly for children from low-income households. Preschoolers from low-income, urban backgrounds (n = 426), including 221 females and 205 males aged 35 - 60 months (M = 47.46, SD = 6.44) participated in an investigation of the latent factorial structure of early literacy. The study also explored whether children's psychological strengths and their family's literacy-related behaviors support improvement of early literacy skills following completion of a literacy development intervention. Results support a three-factor model of early literacy proposed by Sénéchal, LeFevre, Smith-Chant, and Colton (2001). This study also found that, despite the influence of age, sex, and family income, children's psychological strengths and family literacy behaviors are predictive of early literacy skills comprised of this three-factor structure. However, only children's psychological strengths predicted improvements in early literacy scores at post-test. Implications for preschool interventions and measurement of early and family literacy constructs are discussed.

Reginald M. Clark contends, however, that such structural characteristics of families neither predict nor explain the wide variation in academic achievement among children. He emphasizes instead the total family life, stating that the most important indicators of academic potential are embedded in family culture. To support his contentions, Clark offers ten intimate portraits of Black families in Chicago. Visiting the homes of poor one- and two-parent families of high and low achievers, Clark made detailed observations on the quality of home life, noting how family habits and interactions affect school success and what characteristics of family life provide children with "school survival skills," a complex of behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge that are the essential elements in academic success. Clark's conclusions lead to exciting implications for educational policy. If school achievement is not dependent on family structure or income, parents can learn to inculcate school survival skills in their children. Clark offers specific suggestions and strategies for use by teachers, parents, school administrators, and social service policy makers, but his work will also find an audience in urban anthropology, family studies, and Black studies.

There are two pieces of important information for teaching African American males. The first thing was that must-read texts for African American males must have four characteristics: they are intellectually exciting for both students and teachers, they serve as a road map and provide apprenticeship, they challenge students cognitively, and they help students apply literacy skills and strategies independently. The second thing was that teaching African American males requires the educator to be knowledgeable of the 4 c's which are competence, commitment, compassion and cultural responsiveness. African American male students can be taught by everyone; however, what the educator does can have a profound impact on their reading achievement.
