Book Learning to Read and Write

    Book Details:
  • Author : Margaret Harris
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1999-05-27
  • ISBN : 9780521621847
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Learning to Read and Write written by Margaret Harris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-05-27 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, the development of theories about the way children learn to read and write was dominated by studies of English-speaking populations. As we have learned more about the way that children learn to read and write other scripts - whether they have less regularity in their grapheme-phoneme correspondences or do not make use of alphabetic symbols at all - it has become clear that many of the difficulties that confront children learning to read and write English specifically are less evident, or even non-existent, in other populations. At the same time, some aspects of learning to read and write are very similar across scripts. The unique cross-linguistic perspective offered in this book, including chapters on Japanese, Greek and the Scandinavian languages as well as English, shows how the processes of learning to read and spell are affected by the characteristics of the writing system that children are learning to master.

Book Writing Systems Reading Processes and Cross Linguistic Influences

Download or read book Writing Systems Reading Processes and Cross Linguistic Influences written by Hye K. Pae and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-07-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers with a unique array of scholarly reflections on the writing systems of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean in relation to reading processes and data-driven interpretations of cross-language transfer. Distinctively broad in scope, topics addressed in this volume include word reading with respect to orthographic, phonological, morphological, and semantic processing as well as cross-linguistic influences on reading in English as a second language or a foreign language. Given that the three focal scripts have unique orthographic features not found in other languages – Chinese as logography, Japanese with multi-scripts, and Korean as non-Roman alphasyllabary – chapters expound script-universal and script-specific reading processes. As a means of scaling up the body of knowledge traditionally focused on Anglocentric reading research, the scientific accounts articulated in this volume importantly expand the field’s current theoretical frameworks of word processing to theory building with regard to these three languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Q: Why have a guide to using language when you can look it up on the internet? A: Because you often can't find a clear or reliable answer. However, Nicholas Hudson's wonderfully comprehensive and practical compendium on the English language will tell you what you need to know. Should you use 'lay' or 'lie'? How do you use a semicolon correctly? What's a willy-willy? The difference between a town and a city, or a boat and a ship? In his witty and pithy entries, Nicholas Hudson identifies commonly confused terms. He explains how to use the key elements of English grammar and punctuation to convey the meaning you intend. He highlights distinctively Australian usage and terms, and covers the impact of digital technologies on writing and publishing. Modern Australian Usage should be on the desk of every writer who wants to expand their understanding of our rich and frustrating language. 'A comprehensive usage guide based on great knowledge, experience and love of language... immensely readable...' - Susan Butler, The Editor, Macquarie Dictionary 'Insightful and original observations on Australian usage: an essential read for all lovers of language.' - Kate Burridge, Professor of Linguistics, Monash University

Book International Encyclopedia of Linguistics

Download or read book International Encyclopedia of Linguistics written by William Frawley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-05 with total page 2198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, 2nd Edition encompasses the full range of the contemporary field of linguistics, including historical, comparative, formal, mathematical, functional, and philosophical linguistics with special attention given to interrelations within branches of linguistics and to relations of linguistics with other disciplines. Areas of intersection with the social and behavioral sciences--ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and behavioral linguistics--receive major coverage, along with interdisciplinary work in language and literature, mathematical linguistics, computational linguistics, and applied linguistics.Longer entries in the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, ranging up to four thousand words, survey the major fields of study--for example, anthropological linguistics, history of linguistics, semantics, and phonetics. Shorter entries treat specific topics within these fields, such as code switching, sound symbolism, and syntactic features. Other short entries define and discuss technical terms used within the various subfields or provide sketches of the careers of important scholars in the history of linguistics, such as Leonard Bloomfield, Roman Jakobson, and Edward Sapir.A major portion of the work is its extensive coverage of languages and language families. From those as familiar as English, Japanese, and the Romance languages to Hittite, Yoruba, and Nahuatl, all corners of the world receive treatment. Languages that are the subject of independent entries are analyzed in terms of their phonology, grammatical features, syntax, and writing systems. Lists attached to each article on a language group or family enumerate all languages, extinct or still spoken, within that group and provide detailed information on the number of known speakers, geographical range, and degree of intelligibility with other languages in the group. In this way, virtually every known language receives coverage. For ease of reference and to aid research, the articles are alphabetically arranged, each signed by the contributor, supported by up-to-date bibliographies, line drawings, maps, tables, and diagrams, and readily accessible via a system of cross-references and a detailed index and synoptic outline. Authoritative, comprehensive, and innovative, the 2nd edition of the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics will be an indispensable addition to personal, public, academic, and research libraries and will introduce a new generation of readers to the complexities and concerns of this field of study.
