Book Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning

Download or read book Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning written by Norbert M. Seel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 3643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past century, educational psychologists and researchers have posited many theories to explain how individuals learn, i.e. how they acquire, organize and deploy knowledge and skills. The 20th century can be considered the century of psychology on learning and related fields of interest (such as motivation, cognition, metacognition etc.) and it is fascinating to see the various mainstreams of learning, remembered and forgotten over the 20th century and note that basic assumptions of early theories survived several paradigm shifts of psychology and epistemology. Beyond folk psychology and its naïve theories of learning, psychological learning theories can be grouped into some basic categories, such as behaviorist learning theories, connectionist learning theories, cognitive learning theories, constructivist learning theories, and social learning theories. Learning theories are not limited to psychology and related fields of interest but rather we can find the topic of learning in various disciplines, such as philosophy and epistemology, education, information science, biology, and – as a result of the emergence of computer technologies – especially also in the field of computer sciences and artificial intelligence. As a consequence, machine learning struck a chord in the 1980s and became an important field of the learning sciences in general. As the learning sciences became more specialized and complex, the various fields of interest were widely spread and separated from each other; as a consequence, even presently, there is no comprehensive overview of the sciences of learning or the central theoretical concepts and vocabulary on which researchers rely. The Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning provides an up-to-date, broad and authoritative coverage of the specific terms mostly used in the sciences of learning and its related fields, including relevant areas of instruction, pedagogy, cognitive sciences, and especially machine learning and knowledge engineering. This modern compendium will be an indispensable source of information for scientists, educators, engineers, and technical staff active in all fields of learning. More specifically, the Encyclopedia provides fast access to the most relevant theoretical terms provides up-to-date, broad and authoritative coverage of the most important theories within the various fields of the learning sciences and adjacent sciences and communication technologies; supplies clear and precise explanations of the theoretical terms, cross-references to related entries and up-to-date references to important research and publications. The Encyclopedia also contains biographical entries of individuals who have substantially contributed to the sciences of learning; the entries are written by a distinguished panel of researchers in the various fields of the learning sciences.

Book Single and Multiple Stimulus Static Perimetry in Glaucoma The Two Phases of Perimetry

Download or read book Single and Multiple Stimulus Static Perimetry in Glaucoma The Two Phases of Perimetry written by E.L. Greve and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: does not vary more than 1 % over the whole surface. Stimulus: The luminance of the stimuli can be regulated by means of neutral density filters. These filters are neither entirely neutral nor completely uniform, but these variations are not significant for perimetry. The maximum luminance of the stimuli is standardized at 1000 asb (316 2 cd.m-). The standard GP for kinetic perimetry has 3 neutral density filters which reduce the luminance by 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 log units respectively. The modification of the GP for static perimetry is supplied with an additional series of four neutral density filters, which allow luminance steps of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 log units. The resulting luminance values, expressed in apostilb, are given in Table I. Book The Determinants of Reaction Times

Download or read book The Determinants of Reaction Times written by Scott Theodore Janssen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central nervous system has the ability to generate very rapid 'temporally urgent' sensory motor reactions in response to stimuli under certain conditions. For example, temporally urgent reactions have been shown to occur during control of protective responses, such as regaining balance after a perturbation or reacting rapidly to a startling auditory stimulus. Two different mechanisms have been proposed to the observation of rapid reaction times; 1) different (shorter) pathway for those reactions with very rapid reactions and/or 2) increased synaptic excitability to reduce the time required at each site of synaptic convergence leading to a reduction in total reaction time. The overarching hypothesis of this work is that the occurrence of rapid reactions is mediated by the facilitation of pathways through stimulus driven and/or central facilitation leading to significant reduction in reaction time. The current work is delimited to a focus on the determinants of reaction time in response to auditory stimuli. Two studies were conducted to determine the relationship between stimulus intensity and behavioural and neurological responses. Study one focused on influence of stimulus intensity on simple and choice reaction time performance. Choice reaction time is distinguished by need for higher level cortical processing for decision making. Stimulus induced changes in choice reaction time would be most likely accounted for by pathway facilitation. Results from study one showed an overall decrease in choice reaction time to an increase in stimulus intensity with no difference in errors suggesting an increase in stimulus intensity results in increase synaptic facilitation. Study two focused on electrophysiological events associated with auditory stimuli. It was proposed that evidence of more rapid electrophysiological events and increased amplitude would support a model of synaptic facilitation with increases in auditory stimulus intensity. Results from study two showed decreased peak latencies with high stimulus amplitudes as well as increased cortical activity prior to motor responses further suggesting reductions in reaction time to increases in stimulus intensity are a result of increased synaptic facilitation. Overall this thesis is focussed on developing a further understanding of stimulus intensity as a determinant of reaction time so that in the future one may better understand the factors that contribute to slowing in older adults and those with neurological impairment.

Download or read book Attention written by Wayne Wu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention is a fundamental feature of the mind yet has languished in the backwaters of philosophy. Recent years, however, have witnessed a resurgence of philosophical interest in attention, driven by recognition that it is closely connected to consciousness, perception, agency, thought, justification and introspection. As is becoming clear, attention has a rich philosophical significance. This is the first book to provide a systematic overview and assessment of different empirical and philosophical aspects of attention. Wayne Wu discusses the following central topics and problems: major experiments and theories of attention in psychology since the 1950s the neuroscience of attention, including basic mechanisms and models attention’s intimate relation to agency the phenomenology of attention attention as a gatekeeper for consciousness attention as the basis for perception-based thought about objects the role of attention in the justification of belief attention in introspection of consciousness. A key feature of the book is its skilful analysis of the empirical work on attention, and how this relates to philosophy. Additional features include chapter summaries, annotated further reading and a glossary, making this an ideal starting point for anyone studying attention for the first time, as well as being suitable for more advanced students and researchers in psychology, cognitive science, and philosophy.

Book Computational Systems Biology of Pathogen Host Interactions

Download or read book Computational Systems Biology of Pathogen Host Interactions written by Saliha Durmuş and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough understanding of pathogenic microorganisms and their interactions with host organisms is crucial to prevent infectious threats due to the fact that Pathogen-Host Interactions (PHIs) have critical roles in initiating and sustaining infections. Therefore, the analysis of infection mechanisms through PHIs is indispensable to identify diagnostic biomarkers and next-generation drug targets and then to develop strategic novel solutions against drug-resistance and for personalized therapy. Traditional approaches are limited in capturing mechanisms of infection since they investigate hosts or pathogens individually. On the other hand, the systems biology approach focuses on the whole PHI system, and is more promising in capturing infection mechanisms. Here, we bring together studies on the below listed sections to present the current picture of the research on Computational Systems Biology of Pathogen-Host Interactions: - Computational Inference of PHI Networks using Omics Data - Computational Prediction of PHIs - Text Mining of PHI Data from the Literature - Mathematical Modeling and Bioinformatic Analysis of PHIs Computational Inference of PHI Networks using Omics Data Gene regulatory, metabolic and protein-protein networks of PHI systems are crucial for a thorough understanding of infection mechanisms. Great advances in molecular biology and biotechnology have allowed the production of related omics data experimentally. Many computational methods are emerging to infer molecular interaction networks of PHI systems from the corresponding omics data. Computational Prediction of PHIs Due to the lack of experimentally-found PHI data, many computational methods have been developed for the prediction of pathogen-host protein-protein interactions. Despite being emerging, currently available experimental PHI data are far from complete for a systems view of infection mechanisms through PHIs. Therefore, computational methods are the main tools to predict new PHIs. To this end, the development of new computational methods is of great interest. Text Mining of PHI Data from Literature Despite the recent development of many PHI-specific databases, most data relevant to PHIs are still buried in the biomedical literature, which demands for the use of text mining techniques to unravel PHIs hidden in the literature. Only some rare efforts have been performed to achieve this aim. Therefore, the development of novel text mining methods specific for PHI data retrieval is of key importance for efficient use of the available literature. Mathematical Modeling and Bioinformatic Analysis of PHIs After the reconstruction of PHI networks experimentally and/or computationally, their mathematical modeling and detailed computational analysis is required using bioinformatics tools to get insights on infection mechanisms. Bioinformatics methods are increasingly applied to analyze the increasing amount of experimentally-found and computationally-predicted PHI data.
