Book excerpt: So often in the Christian community we hear the question, What do we need to do to reach the unreached? While this appears to be a good question, perhaps its the wrong question. Instead of focusing on what might be best practices, our answers tend to revolve around what are best practices for us. The better question is, How can the unreached be reached? This takes us out of the center of the story and seeks to find the best methods and means to reach those who need to clearly hear the good news of Gods grace.

Book Reaching Beyond Ourselves

Download or read book Reaching Beyond Ourselves written by Stephen C. Morrow and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description Reaching Beyond Ourselves: Seven Lessons In Human Fulfillment is a product of the economic downturn of 2009. While acknowledging the seriousness of financial hardship, this book points out that fulfillment in life need not be dependent on a particular level of financial comfort or well-being. Accordingly, it addresses the human impulse for another kind of personal enrichment the immeasurable satisfaction that manifests itself in the giving back of one life for the betterment of another. Reaching Beyond Ourselves is designed to encourage, enlighten, and invigorate readers in search of renewed meaning for their lives during tough economic times. Readers will find that the structure of each chapter (lesson) is uniformly designed in relation to the other chapters (lessons). While this steady configuration allows for a systematic and recognizable format, the actual content contains information and illustrations that are uniquely woven into particular life lessons. Lesson One points out the fact that if one wishes to make a true difference in life, he or she must first make a conscious decision to that effect. The remainder of the chapter describes how the process (of making a difference) is then able to proceed. Knowing and making the best use of your true inner-self is the theme of Lesson Two. As depicted in this chapter, who you are is ultimately of more lasting significance than what you are. Being able to maintain one's personal perspective is a crucial part of the mix when it comes to the practice of "reaching beyond ourselves." Lesson Three will help readers stay on a positive emotional track. Lesson Four addresses both the joy and the practical value of working together in a noble cause. It is easy to talk about teamwork. This chapter explains the ins and outs of making it work. Leadership is an often used term that is not always fully understood. In Lesson Five readers will find a guide to leadership development. The ability to lead is a critical part of our ability to be effective in "reaching beyond ourselves." Lesson Six incorporates the political element. In this chapter, political involvement is treated not as an end itself, but as a means to greater ends in terms of reaching out to others. The final lesson represents a charge to do what you can while you can. Lesson Seven stresses that the limits of our mortality are all the more reason for us to live rather than simply exist, to embrace the spiritual concept of abundant life rather than mere subsistence. The Afterword is included as an addendum to remind readers that humor is an important tool in one's arsenal. The ability to connect on a personal level can be greatly enhanced though humor. Additionally, laughter can sometimes provide needed balance in the midst of difficult situations. The lesson: Don't forget to laugh! As men and women strive to adjust to the complexities of life during the early years of a new century, this book emphasizes the importance of deeper meaning that transcends day-to-day routine. In the privacy and tranquility of his favorite spot by the little brook in the woods behind his home, he often sat and pondered his future. More and more, he found himself wondering what it was that he was supposed to do with his life. Then late one night, a few days before Christmas, a stranger appeared to him and offered to take him on a journey that would help him find the answers to his questions. With some reluctance, Mathew accepted his offer, and together, they traveled to a lodge in a cold snow-covered northern region where Matthew spent time with some of the wisest individuals whom he had ever met. Each of the individuals whom he met helped him to take a closer look not only at his doubts and fears but also at his abilities as well. It is a journey that everyone should take.

Book The Spontaneous Brain

Download or read book The Spontaneous Brain written by Georg Northoff and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument for a Copernican revolution in our consideration of mental features—a shift in which the world-brain problem supersedes the mind-body problem. Philosophers have long debated the mind-body problem—whether to attribute such mental features as consciousness to mind or to body. Meanwhile, neuroscientists search for empirical answers, seeking neural correlates for consciousness, self, and free will. In this book, Georg Northoff does not propose new solutions to the mind-body problem; instead, he questions the problem itself, arguing that it is an empirically, ontologically, and conceptually implausible way to address the existence and reality of mental features. We are better off, he contends, by addressing consciousness and other mental features in terms of the relationship between world and brain; philosophers should consider the world-brain problem rather than the mind-body problem. This calls for a Copernican shift in vantage point—from within the mind or brain to beyond the brain—in our consideration of mental features. Northoff, a neuroscientist, psychiatrist, and philosopher, explains that empirical evidence suggests that the brain's spontaneous activity and its spatiotemporal structure are central to aligning and integrating the brain within the world. This spatiotemporal structure allows the brain to extend beyond itself into body and world, creating the “world-brain relation” that is central to mental features. Northoff makes his argument in empirical, ontological, and epistemic-methodological terms. He discusses current models of the brain and applies these models to recent data on neuronal features underlying consciousness and proposes the world-brain relation as the ontological predisposition for consciousness.

Book The Outward Mindset

Download or read book The Outward Mindset written by , The Arbinger Institute and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of an international bestseller helps individuals and organizations shift to a new mindset that will improve performance, spark collaboration, accelerate innovation, and make your life and the lives of everyone around you better. Without even being aware of it, many of us operate from an inward mindset, a single-minded focus on our own goals and objectives. This book points out the many ways, some quite subtle and deceptive, that this mindset invites tension and conflict. But incredible things happen when people switch to an outward mindset. They intuitively understand what coworkers, colleagues, family, and friends need to be successful and happy. Their organizations thrive, and astonishingly, by focusing on others they become happier and more successful themselves! This new mindset brings about deep and far-reaching changes. The Outward Mindset presents compelling true stories to illustrate the gaps that individuals and organizations typically experience between their actual inward mindsets and their needed outward mindsets. And it provides simple yet profound guidance and tools to help bridge this mindset gap. This new edition includes a new preface, updated case studies, and new material covering Arbinger's latest research on mindsets. In the long run, changing negative behavior without changing one's mindset doesn't last—the old behaviors always reassert themselves. But changing the mindset that causes the behavior changes everything.

Book excerpt: Doctors think they heal with drugs. But only living cells can heal. When something is out of balance, your cells move to correct it because bodies want to be well. HEAL YOURSELF! HOW TO HARNESS PLACEBO POWER shows how to tap into this mysterious process to get well and stay well by harnessing your body's natural healing power—the power of placebo. These amazing effects are not just "in the mind." They can be observed and measured in the body's physiology. When patients believe in the treatment, ulcers heal, warts disappear, cancer goes into remission, swelling reduces—cells actually look different under the microscope. When your doctor believes in the treatment, the impact is even more powerful —not in every case, of course. But in enough that science now accepts that something is going on! HEAL YOURSELF! explains how researchers believe that the stress response creates an environment that promotes physiological breakdown, while the relaxation Response creates a healing environment. HEAL YOURSELF! offers specific things you can do, and do today, to turn on your body's innate healing mechanisms, including meditation, prayer, laughter, listening to music and rocking, Qi Gong, gratitude and forgiveness, and more.
