Book excerpt: Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the tracks of dinosaurs best be interpreted and used to reconstruct them? In many Mesozoic sedimentary rock formations, fossilized footprints of bipedal, three-toed (tridactyl) dinosaurs are preserved in huge numbers, often with few or no skeletons. Such tracks sometimes provide the only clues to the former presence of dinosaurs, but their interpretation can be challenging: How different in size and shape can footprints be and yet have been made by the same kind of dinosaur? How similar can they be and yet have been made by different kinds of dinosaurs? To what extent can tridactyl dinosaur footprints serve as proxies for the biodiversity of their makers? Profusely illustrated and meticulously researched, Noah's Ravens quantitatively explores a variety of approaches to interpreting the tracks, carefully examining within-species and across-species variability in foot and footprint shape in nonavian dinosaurs and their close living relatives. The results help decipher one of the world's most important assemblages of fossil dinosaur tracks, found in sedimentary rocks deposited in ancient rift valleys of eastern North America. Those often beautifully preserved tracks were among the first studied by paleontologists, and they were initially interpreted as having been made by big birds—one of which was jokingly identified as Noah's legendary raven.

Book excerpt: The Great War Has Ended… The thousand years following the Great War, and the writing of the First Law, were not always peaceful, but nothing could compare to the slaughter that came before. The three races continued to make their way through the world in relative prosperity, even after the separation of the Eastern Kingdom over five hundred years prior. The horrors of the Great War faded into the annals of history, except for a single problem. It was all a lie. Distrust of the ravens was beginning to spread from an unknown source. The disappearances were growing more frequent and were joined by even darker rumors. Through all this, the Raven Queens continued to research the truth for centuries. How do you prove a lie with no evidence? How do you find evidence from a thousand years ago? What really happened? How did the Great War truly end? Queen Nánfeng knows she will not live to see the answers but knows they are running out of time. All she can do is prepare the way for her child-prodigy of a daughter. A seven-year-old Princess who cares more about complaining and hiding from her training than she does about the state of the world. It will be up to Princess Qiàn’s Wolf Protector to keep her on the proper path. The true road to being the Raven Queen is a brutal one which no one would ever want to force on another. However, through the suffering and sacrifice of one, perhaps all others will be spared. Unbeknownst to all, even the Raven Queens, their world has been being watched closely for a very long time, from both sides.

Book For Love and Money the Literary Art of the Harlequin Mills and Boon Romance

Download or read book For Love and Money the Literary Art of the Harlequin Mills and Boon Romance written by Laura Vivanco and published by Humanities-Ebooks. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Vivanco's study challenges the idea that Harlequin Mills & Boon romances are merely mass-produced commodities, churned out in accordance with a strict and unchanging formula. She argues that many are well-written, skilfully crafted works, and that some are small masterpieces. For Love and Money demonstrates the variety that exists beneath the covers of Harlequin Mills & Boon romances. They range from paranormal romances to novels resembling chick lit, and many have addressed serious issues, including the plight of post-Second World War refugees, threats to marine mammals, and HIV/AIDS. The genre draws inspiration from Shakespearean comedies and Austen's novels, as well as from other forms of popular culture. "“Laura Vivanco’s 'For Love and Money' is an impressive study of the popular fiction of Harlequin Mills and Boon that is a must read for any student of popular fiction and for those who write and love the genre” —Liz Fielding, author of over 50 Harlequin Mills & Boon romances.“Deep learning, wide reading, and clear thinking are very much in evidence in Vivanco’s exploration of HM&B. A welcome addition to popular romance criticism.” — Professor Pamela Regis, author of 'A Natural History of the Romance Novel'."Laura Vivanco’s analysis of the category romance is both meticulous and inspiring. And while Vivanco limits her examples and discussions to category romances by Harlequin Mills & Boon and the HQN imprint, her application of Frye’s mimetic modes begs for expansion to texts and authors across the genre. This piece of literary criticism should serve as a template for romance scholars to move from defending the genre to discussing its values and complexity as a literary art. — Maryan Wherry, 'Journal of Popular Romance Studies'
