Book Raspberries and Children

Download or read book Raspberries and Children written by Frank H. Wallace and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching is one of the most generative, selfless and inscrutable of human encounters, requiring that we leave ourselves behind and that we bring ourselves along, that we deny ourselves and use ourselves, that we surmount our personal histories and rely on them to understand personal histories in the making. The raising of raspberries and the teaching of children became, for me, companion activities. The one informed my understanding of the other. The virtues of a gardener -- patience, realism, regularity of effort, careful and long-term planning, are also the virtues also of a teacher. A child wants tending as much as a garden. The most beautiful strains of character or flower are often the most fragile and require the most careful cultivation. Neglect and a want of love are the greatest enemies of gardens and children. No more than flowers do habits of the mind and heart spring full-grown. What is required of a gardener or a teacher is an active and tireless labor that appreciates things as they are and realistically imagines what they might become.

Book excerpt: A novel “as haunting as a dream” from the New York Times-bestselling, Newbery Medal-winning author of The Giver (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). Where do dreams come from? What stealthy nighttime messengers are the guardians of our most deeply hidden hopes and our half-forgotten fears? This imaginative novel confronts these questions and explores the conflicts between the gentle bits and pieces of the past that come to life in dream, and the darker horrors that find their form in nightmare. In a haunting story that tiptoes between reality and fantasy, two people—a lonely, sensitive woman and a damaged, angry boy—face their own histories and discover what they can be to one another, renewed by the strength that comes from a tiny, caring creature they will never see. “Lyrical, richly descriptive prose ushers readers into a fascinating parallel world inhabited by appealingly quirky characters.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A beautiful novel with an intriguing premise.”—School Library Journal (starred review)

This book is for kids who like big colors and catchy words, but it's also for parents who end up reading the same story every single night. (This is every parent.) The Salty Avocado wasn't always so salty, in fact, he used to be one of the more popular members of his home in the fridge. Then one day, an accident changed him. It wasn't his fault, but after that day Avocado's mood turned dark and there wasn't anything any of his food friends could do. Little by little the other foods desserted (get it?) him. Soon he was all alone and liked it that way. Can anything change Avocado back to his gregarious self? With whimsical rhymes and rousing illustrations, The Salty Avocado teaches the value of friendship in the face of adversity.
