Book excerpt: Some things are easier to demonstrate than they are to explain: easier caught than taught. The concept of a unique type of person, affectionately called a Rascal in this book, is a prime example. In the book, we will consider the characteristics of Rascals, noting their greatness and analyzing their behaviors. As we do so, it will be most illustrative to simply observe some representative individuals as a way to shine light on the whole concept. What you may notice while reviewing this gallery of Rascals is the large range of background, circumstances, age, gender, and race they collectively represent which have nothing to do with the concept. Being a Rascal is an outpouring of who a person is on the inside. It is a spirit of willfulness and strength, a dynamic force that drives one forward toward a unique path and contribution. It is authenticity in courageous display. It is life lived on purpose and for a purpose.

Book excerpt: Readers and critics were wowed by G. B. Trudeau's epic masterpiece 40: A Doonesbury Retrospective, and they'll rejoice when they see this beautiful follow-up volume. Featuring an innovative format and an all-new collection of strips, Red Rascal's War is the first all-color Doonesbury book ever. Both Trudeau and his fans have followed Doonesbury's ever-expanding cast through four decades of cultural turbulence and change. With its arresting cover and rich interior, Red Rascal's War showcases the most recent additions to a body of work the New York Times admiringly refers to as "a sprawling masterwork." "[Trudeau is] Dickensian in his range of characters," writes Garry Wills in The New York Review of Books. "Trudeau has just kept improving, year after year, in part because he stays so close to changing events. . . . He has never been better than in the last six years." From the exploits of Afghan legend-in-chief Sorkh Razil to the pipe dreams of Malibu's top nanny Zonker Harris, and from the "no more chill pills" intervention by Obama's aides to the way-cool love of a headbanging war vet and his MIT-grad gal, Doonesbury marches wildly on. "What else is guaranteed to make you think, feel nostalgic, and laugh out loud at least once a page?" --Karen Holt, O Magazine

Book The Scallywags Memories of a Rascal s 1950 s Childhood

Download or read book The Scallywags Memories of a Rascal s 1950 s Childhood written by Peter Stockley and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you ever think about how the roads you walked as a child change the doors that open in your future? In 1951, seven-year-old Peter Stockley's life was set down a dark path after losing his mother. Her legacy to him was an optimism and spirit that even a vile step-mother could not break, and after an explosive confrontation, Peter set off on a new journey, via an orphanage, to his aunt and uncle's home in a tenement block by the North Liverpool docks: The Billogs. It was here he became one of 'The Scallywags', a group of streetwise young rascals who knew every inch of the canals, docklands and railway lines. With a turbulent home life, intense family tragedy and a chronic heart murmur, Peter had ground to make up in a golden age when children would play in the streets from dusk until dawn. But with the Scallywags, he had the run of the city. Peter embarked on a youth of picaresque adventures; clinging to the backs of speeding lorries, treading the boards of bombed houses for firewood, head-spinning climbs up fivestorey block of flats – nothing was out of bounds for the Scallywags. But their adventures also gave him an iron-clad sense of morality, honesty and respect which would go on to shape the rest of his life. This nostalgic, deeply moving – and often extremely funny – memoir of youth and young manhood in the Liverpool of the fifties and sixties recalls the exuberant joy every child feels at being 'one of the gang', and explores how the future can play out in very unexpected ways.

Book American Rascal

Download or read book American Rascal written by Greg Steinmetz and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping, “rollicking” (John Carreyrou, New York Times bestselling author of Bad Blood) biography of Jay Gould, the greatest of the 19th-century robber barons, whose brilliance, greed, and bare-knuckled tactics made him richer than Rockefeller and led Wall Street to institute its first financial reforms. Had Jay Gould put his name on a university or concert hall, he would undoubtedly have been a household name today. The son of a poor farmer whose early life was marked by tragedy, Gould saw money as the means to give his family a better life…even if, to do so, he had to pull a fast one on everyone else. After entering Wall Street at the age of twenty-four, he quickly became notorious when he paralyzed the economy and nearly toppled President Ulysses S. Grant in the Black Friday market collapse of 1869 in an attempt to corner the market on gold—an event that remains among the darkest days in Wall Street history. Through clever financial maneuvers, he gained control over one of every six miles of the country’s rapidly expanding network for railroad tracks—coming close to creating the first truly transcontinental railroad and making himself one of the richest men in America. American Rascal shows Gould’s complex, quirky character. He was at once praised for his brilliance by Rockefeller and Vanderbilt and condemned for forever destroying American business values by Mark Twain. He lived a colorful life, trading jokes with Thomas Edison, figuring Thomas Nast’s best sketches, paying Boss Tweed’s bail, and commuting to work in a 200-foot yacht. Gould thrived in an expanding, industrial economy in which authorities tolerated inside trading and stock price manipulation because they believed regulation would stifle the progress. But by taking these practices to new levels, Gould showed how unbridled capitalism was, in fact, dangerous for the American economy. This “gripping biography” (Fortune) explores how Gould’s audacious exploitation of economic freedom triggered the first public demands for financial reforms—a call that still resonates today.

Download or read book Rascals diary Part 2 written by Beatrice Kobras and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am Rascal. Puss. For a while, I thought my name was "Who's there?" because my people always cried out in delight, "Who's there?" whenever they saw me. And they saw me very often. I was pretty angry about a stupid name. But now I know that my name is Rascal, and I am reassured. I like Rascal much better than "Who's there?" I'd hate to be called that. Yesterday I turned three months old and didn't get a birthday party with cake and paper hats because mistress says that you only have a birthday once a year and not every month. I think that's pretty stupid. I don't even know how long a year is. And a year sounds pretty long. But in the evening at least I managed to bite off her bread in an unobserved short moment. Not like cake, but better than nothing. I have two people, a dog, a billion toy mice and balls, a basket everywhere, and I have acquired a few more that shouldn't be mine, and scratching trees with dangling toys on them, and I am busy all day long clearing the houseplants of their leaves so that I always have something new to hunt, and I follow mistress absolutely at every turn, which is quite exhausting with her eternal back and forth. But then I cuddle up to the dog and we take a nap together. Oh yes, and I am quite busy with eating, because I still have to grow. Because when I grow up, I want to be a lion. Master once decided that he had a cat hair allergy, so mistress told him that he was only allergic to the nonsense I do all the time. But he got used to it in the meantime and he loves me very much.
