Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ethics boards have become obligatory passage points in today's medical science, and we forget how novel they really are. The use of humans in experiments is an age-old practice that records show goes back to at least the third century BC and, since the early modern period, as a practice it has become increasingly popular. Yet, in most countries around the world, hardly any formal checks and balances existed to govern the communal oversight of experiments involving human subjects until at least the 1960s. Ethics by Committee traces the rise of ethics boards for human experimentation in the second half of the twentieth century. Using the Netherlands as a case-study, Noortje Jacobs shows how the authority of physicians to make decisions about clinical research gave way in most developed nations to formal mechanisms of communal decision-making that served to regiment the behavior of individual researchers. This historically unprecedented change in scientific governance came out of a growing international wariness of medical research in the decades after World War II. Research ethics committees were originally intended not only to make human experimentation more ethical but also to raise its epistemic quality. By examining complex negotiations over the appropriate governance of human subjects research, Ethics by Committee advances our understanding not only of the history of research ethics and the randomized controlled trial but also, more broadly, of how liberal democracies in the late twentieth century have sought to resolve public concerns over charged issues in medicine and science"--

Book The Evolution and Everyday Practice of Collective Patient Involvement in Europe

Download or read book The Evolution and Everyday Practice of Collective Patient Involvement in Europe written by Alexander Haarmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely study analyzes social, economic, political, provider, and patient factors shaping collective patient involvement in European health care from the postwar period to the present day. Examining representative countries England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden, it documents the roles of providers and legislatures in facilitating consumer involvement, and the varied forms of patient input into hospital operations. These findings are compared and contrasted against the intent and ideals behind patient involvement to assess the effectiveness of implementation policy, strengths and drawbacks of patient participation, and patient satisfaction and outcomes. The book’s conclusions identify emerging forms of patient participation and predict the impact of health policy on the future of European collective patient involvement. Included in the coverage: · Patient involvement: who, what for, and in what way? · The Netherlands: the legislative process to collective patient involvement · England: formal means of public involvement—a continuous story of discontinuity · Germany: Joint Federal Committee—the “Little Legislator” · Sweden: reasons for a late emergence of patient involvement · Lessons to be learned from implementing patient involvement The Evolution and Everyday Practice of Collective Patient Involvement in Europe will interest and inspire scholars and researchers in diverse fields, including social policy, sociology, political sciences, and nursing studies, as well as patient organizations, policymakers, and healthcare providers.

The book attempts to trace the conditions, the sources and the connections of the regulatory processes for financial statements — providing orientation for readers unfamiliar with the Dutch context and a chronological survey from the 19th century to the early 1990’s. In addition to analysing the Dutch process, comparison is made with the standard-setting processes in the United States and UK. The title will be of interest to students of Business and Economics.

Book Netherlands Reports to the XIth International Congress of Comparative Law Caracas 1982

Download or read book Netherlands Reports to the XIth International Congress of Comparative Law Caracas 1982 written by H. D'Oliveira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last year I addressed the Netherlands Comparative Law Asso ciation with the following question: 'Does Comparative Law Exist At All?' (My intention then was to flog the dead (?) horse of the merger of comparative law and the sociology of law. ) In presenting this voluminous collection of Netherlands national reports to the eleventh congress of the Internatio nal Academy of Comparative Law I feel my misgivings giving way to the suspicion, that comparative law indeed exists. Of course national reports do not, as such, prove the exist ence of comparative law. It is the general reports together with the national reports, which embody the comparative effort. That is why the Netherlands Comparative Law Associa tion took the initiative to propose the publishing of the materials on a subject to subject basis instead of publish ing collections of national reports. From a comparative legal point of view, it is the topic that should form the basis of the publication, and not the origin of the materials. The general reporter for each topic should be prepared to take up the responsabilities of editing the volume, and would have to be given the right to select those national reports which he considers to be useful both in regard to their quality and the relevance of the material to the basic problems in the questionnaire. This proposal met with very favourable comments from the na tional committees and general reporters of some fifteen coun tries.

Book Immunities of Special Missions Immunit s des missions sp ciales

Download or read book Immunities of Special Missions Immunit s des missions sp ciales written by Council of Europe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special missions play an increasing and crucial role in international diplomacy and yet the international law governing them remains to some extent uncertain. This book is based on the responses of States to the questionnaire of the Council of Europe Committee of Legal Advisers on Public International Law (CAHDI) on 'Immunities of special missions', considered against the background of the 1969 United Nations Convention on Special Missions, key judicial decisions and national legislation on special mission immunity, government statements, and other state practice and evidence of opinio juris . The book presents and analyses the international law and practice governing special missions, while identifying remaining areas of uncertainty. This volume contains an up-to-date analysis of the law and practice of special missions, based on information from a wide range of States. It aims to provide a practical guide on this issue for governments, judges, practitioners, academics and students alike.

Book The Oxford Handbook of European Islam

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of European Islam written by Jocelyne Cesari and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, Muslim countries and Europe have engaged one another through theological dialogues, diplomatic missions, political rivalries, and power struggles. In the last thirty years, due in large part to globalization and migration from Islamic countries to the West, what was previously an engagement across national and cultural boundaries has increasingly become an internalized encounter within Europe itself. Questions of the Hijab in schools, freedom of expression in the wake of the Danish Cartoon crisis, and the role of Shari'a have come to the forefront of contemporary European discourse. The Oxford Handbook of European Islam is the first collection to present a comprehensive approach to the multiple and changing ways Islam has been studied across European countries. Parts one to three address the state of knowledge of Islam and Muslims within a selection of European countries, while presenting a critical view of the most up-to-date data specific to each country. These chapters analyze the immigration cycles and policies related to the presence of Muslims, tackling issues such as discrimination, post-colonial identity, adaptation, and assimilation. The thematic chapters, in parts four and five, examine secularism, radicalization, Shari'a, Hijab, and Islamophobia with the goal of synthesizing different national discussion into a more comparative theoretical framework. The Handbook attempts to balance cutting edge assessment with the knowledge that the content itself will eventually be superseded by events. Featuring eighteen newly-commissioned essays by noted scholars in the field, this volume will provide an excellent resource for students and scholars interested in European Studies, immigration, Islamic studies, and the sociology of religion.

  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book Rights for Others written by Barbara Oomen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rights for Others is an empirical study of what happens when international human rights are applied domestically in The Netherlands. It tracks recent debates in Dutch society on citizenship and the rights of immigrants, and analyses the shift from the perception of human rights as a 'foreign policy concern' to the slow processes of homecoming in what has traditionally been a left-wing society, but now includes many more right-wing political parties. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, Oomen combines insights from law, sociology and anthropology to explain how rights gain significance in framing social and political discussions. The book provides comprehensive coverage on relevant constitutional law, legal culture and rights realization as well as discussing case material on human rights education, polarization, socio-economic rights, domestic violence and the rights of minorities. This is an invaluable contribution to the global fields of human rights and socio-legal studies for scholars and researchers.
