Download or read book Trichinella and Trichinosis written by William Campbell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have cured the Empress of Boolampoo of a Cramp she got in her tongue by eating Pork and buttered parsnips .... The Earl of Rochester-17th Century As the modern outpouring of biological information continues at ever increasing pace, two kinds of reviews are needed to keep the torrent in manageable form. The one assumes a working knowledge of the field in question and tries to bring the reader up to date by reporting and assessing the recent developments. The other attempts to assimilate the recent developments into a coherent restatement of the whole subject. This book falls in the latter category. Trichinella spiralis infection has been in the medical and biological limelight for more than a century, and interest in it continues una bated-as evidenced by what Norman Stoll called the "perennially exuberant" research on trichinosis. The infection seems to offer some thing for almost everyone. For the physician, it offers a patient with painful and sometimes fatal disease; for the public-health official, a threat to the commonweal; for the experimental biologist, a life cycle that is unique yet easily and rapidly maintained in the laboratory; for the field ecologist, a symbiont with an affinity for an extraordinary range of wildlife species; for the pork producer, a poorer profit; for the cook, a culinary constraint; and for the diner, a dietary danger. Yet, despite this breadth of interest, and the cascade of new data, the only comprehensive books on the subject in English are those of S.E.

Book Immunologic Signatures of Rejection

Download or read book Immunologic Signatures of Rejection written by Francesco M. Marincola and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the mechanisms leading to immune-mediated tissue rejection following the hypothesis that independent of the disease process the final effector mechanism is shared by most (but not all) pathologies and it is relatively simple. The book covers evidence gathered to support the thesis by studies performed in humans during rejection or in experimental models and will focus particularly (but not exclusively) on the analysis of the rejected tissue rather than the systemic circulation. Several disease processes are discussed including example of chronic inflammatory process without resolution of the pathologic process and acute one with resolution of the pathologic process (clearance of pathogen, rejection of tumor) or unwanted tissue destruction (allograft rejection, autoimmunity).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the identification number 60 indicate a toxic substance or a flammable solid, in the molten state at an elevated temperature? Does the identification number 1035 indicate ethane or butane? What is the difference between natural gas transmission pipelines and natural gas distribution pipelines? If you came upon an overturned truck on the highway that was leaking, would you be able to identify if it was hazardous and know what steps to take? Questions like these and more are answered in the Emergency Response Guidebook. Learn how to identify symbols for and vehicles carrying toxic, flammable, explosive, radioactive, or otherwise harmful substances and how to respond once an incident involving those substances has been identified. Book Primary Mistake

Download or read book Primary Mistake written by Steve Laffey and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-09-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When I ran for reelection as the mayor of Cranston, there was an independent candidate running whose only claim to fame was that he wanted to keep a thirty-five-foot inflatable gorilla in his backyard. He was endearingly referred to as Gorilla Man. I never thought to say, 'Why is Gorilla Man running? 'When the debates were scheduled, I showed up and debated him along with the Democratic candidate. I never said, 'I won't debate Gorilla Man.' I never thought he couldn't run. This is America.... The fascinating thing about the whole experience was how pathetic the Republican establishment seemed. After all, they were supposed to be the ones in charge. Who was I? I was just the mayor of a midsize city in the country's smallest state, with only four years of political office under my belt I was the David to their Goliath, the 1998 U.S. Olympic hockey team to then Soviet Union machine. Following my conversations with the aforementioned folks, I began to wonder: Is this what happens at the national level? Does power trump ideology and principle? "Of all the conversations I had with [the GOP establishment] not one involved a discussion about what I could offer them as a U.S. senator. They never talked about tax cuts, the war on terror, or spending cuts. These conversations were designed to convince me not to run. If anything, they had the opposite effect...."

Book Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research

Download or read book Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research written by Raymond A. Levy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research: Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence continues the important work of the first book published in 2009 by Humana Press (Handbook of Evidence-Based Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Practice). This landmark title presents in one volume significant developments in research, including neuroscience research, in psychodynamic psychotherapy by a team of renowned clinician-researchers. The demand for ongoing research initiatives in psychodynamic psychotherapy from both internal and external sources has increased markedly in recent years, and this volume continues to demonstrate the efficacy and effectiveness of a psychodynamic approach to psychotherapeutic interventions in the treatment of psychological problems. The work in this volume is presented in the spirit of ongoing discussion between researchers and clinicians about the value of specific approaches to specific patients with specific psychiatric and psychological problems. Multiple forms of treatment interventions have been developed over the past fifty years, and this volume makes clear, with firm evidence, the authors’ support for the current emphasis on personalized medicine. Groundbreaking and a major contribution to the psychiatric and psychologic literature, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research: Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence provides firm grounding for advancing psychodynamic psychotherapy as a treatment paradigm.

Book Pharmacotherapy of Depression

    Book Details:
  • Author : Domenic A. Ciraulo
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2004-04-28
  • ISBN : 1592597920
  • Pages : 315 pages

Download or read book Pharmacotherapy of Depression written by Domenic A. Ciraulo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-04-28 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, we have taught clinical psychopharmacology to residents in psychiatry, neurology, and medicine, as well as to medical students, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and social workers. We have also maintained active clinical practices and research programs. It is our hope that these experiences have produced a book that will serve as a resource in antidepressant therapy for clinicians from many different disciplines. The purpose of Pharmacotherapy of Depression is to provide a compreh- sive overview of antidepressant therapy for clinicians. The contents have evolved from our years of seminars, lectures, and case discussions with our trainees and from our continuing medical education programs. We have tried to provide sufficient depth in reviews of the research literature to support clinical rec- mendations without burdening the reader with information that has little r- evance to the clinical use of antidepressants. We are indebted to the outstanding clinician scientists who have contributed to this volume and to our students who have guided us in its development. We hope that the reader will find that the final product represents a solid foundation for clinicians who are, or will be, prescribing antidepressants. It comes very close to replicating the formal didactics that our trainees experience. Although in practice we supplement this with intensive supervision of patient management, we hope that Pharmacotherapy of Depression will stand alone as a guide to the use of medications for the treatment of depressive illness.

Book Clinical Trials with Missing Data
