Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The approach to total hip and total knee arthroplasty is changing around the world. There is now a strong emphasis on a more rapid recovery and on more outpatient surgery. Each step of the process is now being modified with more thorough pre-operative evaluations, streamlined surgical approaches, rapid mobilization and faster return to normal activities. These changes place new pressures on all of the health care providers in the system. This unique text - the first of its kind - is a practical guide for each member of the clinical team with updates by the leading authorities from around the country. Each chapter addresses a specific issue and will outline the important new items that need to be addressed, very similar to a handbook. Topics covered include the implementation of new payment models and outcome measurements, recommendations to streamline the pre-, peri- and post-operative protocols, the utility and application of outpatient joint replacement programs, multimodal pain management and post-acute rehabilitation strategies. There is no publication at present that addresses all of these items together in one convenient place. Rapid Recovery in Total Joint Arthroplasty is written and edited by experienced clinicians and surgeons, sharing their years of experience to create a practical, up-to-date text useful for everyday work.

Book Outpatient Hip and Knee Replacement

Download or read book Outpatient Hip and Knee Replacement written by R. Michael Meneghini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outpatient surgery and early discharge is the hottest topic in hip and knee arthroplasty and will continue to be in the coming years: It is expected that over 50% of all hip and knee arthroplasties will be performed in the outpatient setting by 2026. Currently, a central text that encompasses all of the unique aspects of performing hip and knee arthroplasty in the outpatient setting does not exist. Furthermore, as surgeons across the US and abroad are incentivized and encouraged by government and commercial payors, as well as patients, to perform these surgical procedures in the outpatient setting, the educational material must be available to disseminate the unique perioperative and surgical strategies and techniques accordingly. This book is unique in that it will address all the essential elements and considerations to promote surgeon success in this endeavor and enhance patient safety through the transition of hip and knee arthroplasty into the outpatient setting, as well as how to implement such a program into practice. Topics discussed include patient selection, medical optimization and risk management, anesthetic surgical techniques, pain management protocols, and postoperative physical therapy. Later chapters cover practical issues surrounding outcome metrics, discharge criteria, minimizing patient readmissions, financial considerations, and additional implications for hospitals, ASCs and payers. Filling a glaring gap in the literature on this popular new topic, Outpatient Joint Replacement is an ideal resource for orthopedic surgeons, notably hip and knee specialists, as well as residents, fellows and supporting clinical staff.

Book Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty

Download or read book Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty written by Tad L. Gerlinger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) - also known as unicondylar knee arthroplasty or partial knee replacement - is an excellent surgical option for the treatment of isolated medial, lateral and patellofemoral compartment arthritis of the knee, as long term results suggest high patient satisfaction and survivability that rivals total knee arthroplasty (TKA). These procedures are well-suited for rapid recovery protocols and outpatient surgery through well-structured surgical pathways. With demand increasing for knee arthroplasty, patients presenting sooner and at a younger age, and an ever-increasing interest from patients, surgeons and payors in outpatient surgery, the demand for unicompartmental arthroplasty is expected to increase significantly. This text will assist orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, residents and attendings in developing successful pathways for unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, divided into three thematic sections. Part one discusses the history, indications and patient selection for UKA, including how to manage patient expectations, as well as implant choices. Surgical techniques for UKA are presented in part two, both the medial and lateral sides, with discussion of mobile bearings, pain management, blood preservation strategies, and therapy options both before and after surgery. Complications and their prevention are presented in part three, including periprosthetic fractures and infection. Timely and practical, Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty will provide orthopedic surgeons and related clinical staff with all they need to know to bring this increasingly common technique into practice.

Book Improving Strength and Function After Total Knee Arthroplasty

Download or read book Improving Strength and Function After Total Knee Arthroplasty written by Michael John Bade and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate two novel methods of rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with the overall goal of improving strength and function within this patient population. The first method of rehabilitation to be examined was the use of an early high intensity, progressive resistance exercise program (HI), initiated 5 days postoperatively, over the first 12 weeks after TKA. This was a prospective cohort study of 8 subjects who were age and sex-matched to a historical cohort that underwent standardized, lower intensity rehabilitation (CONTROL). The results from this study indicated that the HI invention lead to a more rapid recovery of strength and function compared to the CONTROL group. Moreover, the HI group was able to recover to a higher ultimate level of strength and function compared to the CONTROL group and these results were maintained in the long-term ..."--Abstract.

Download or read book Joint Arthroplasty written by Shinichi Imura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of total joint arthroplasty throughout the world has contributed manifold benefits to patients who suffer from joint diseases. Concurrently, however, there has been an increase in revision surgery. Many orthopedic surgeons agree that durability of prostheses is an eternal problem. In particular, periprosthetic osteolysis recently has been identified as one of the serious problems affecting prosthetic dura bility. To improve durability, osteolysis and many other problems must be investi gated and solved both experimentally and clinically with respect to such aspects as prosthetic material, design, and biological and biomechanical behavior. This book comprises 37 papers that were presented by orthopedic surgeons and biomedical engineers at the 28th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Replace ment Arthroplasty, held in March 1998 in Kanazawa, Japan. The volume is thus a compilation of the latest knowledge about the pathogenesis and reduction of osteolysis and wear, newly developed total hip prostheses, and other current topics of total knee arthroplasty. We earnestly hope that this book will be of benefit to clinicians and researchers, and that it will contribute to the creation of more durable total joint prostheses in the future.
