Book excerpt: Because a previous study showed that the yield strength and toughness of conventionally quenched and tempered steels would be significantly improved by rapid austenitizing, a statistically designed program was initiated to evaluate rapidheat-treatment variables. The effect of prior microstructure (as-rolled and as-quenched), heating rate (2, 10, and 200 F per second), number of austenitizing passes (1 and 5), peak austenitizing temperature (1400, 1550, and 1700 F), holding time at peak temperature (10 to 15 and 50 to 70 seconds), and tempering temperature (untempered, 400, 700, and 1000 F) on the mechanical properties of the 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V experimental HY130/150 steel were determined and compared with those of conventionally heat-treated 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel. The statistical analysis of the data predicted that the 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel will exhibit a yield strength of 185 ksi, a tensile strength of 204 ksi, an elongation of 17%, a reduction of area of 68 percent, and a Charpy energy absorption at 80 F of 70 ft-lb when as-rolled material is rapidly austenitized 5 times at 200 F per second to a peak temperature of 1400 F, water-quenched, and conventionally tempered at 360 F. Book excerpt: Recent studies of the developments in welding steels with yield strengths greater than 150 ksi have included low-alloy martensitic steels, medium-alloy martensitic steels, nickel maraging steels, and bainitic steels. Only weldments from medium-alloy martensitic steels and nickel maraging steels have mechanical properties approaching those of the base plate without a complete postweld heat treatment. The most serious problem with the other steel is low toughness in the weld fusion zone. Adequate weld metal toughness under conditions of elastic strain can be obtarined over the entire 150 to 225 ksi yield-strength range only if the tungsten-arc welding process is used. Processes with higher deposition rates can produce comparable weld deposits only in the lower portion of the range. Above a yield strength of 200 ksi, 18Ni maraging steel weldments have the best combination of strength and toughness. Below 200 ksi, the HP 9-4-25 medium-alloy martensitic steel and 12Ni maraging steel weldments have nearly equal properties.

Book excerpt: As part of the HY-180/210 feasibility study, various special processing techniques are being evaluated to establish their potential for improving the toughness of high-yield-strength steels. One processing technique that appears promising in this respect is rapid heat treatment. Therefore, the Applied Research Laboratory initiated a preliminary evaluation of the process by determining the mechanical properties of a 5 1/4 Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel that was heat treated by various combinations of rapid austenitizing, rapid tempering, conventional austenitizing, and conventional tempering. The results showed that the yield strength of the rapidly austenitized specimens was 10 to 20 ksi higher than that of the conventionally austenitized specimens with no loss of notch toughness or ductility. Rapid tempering (4 F per second) after rapid austentizing produced a slightly better combination of strength and toughness at low tempering temperatures than conventional tempering, but conventional tempering produced a slightly better combination of strength and toughness at high tempering temperatures for rapidly austenitized specimens. These preliminary results indicate that rapid heat treatment offers considerable promise for increasing the yield strength of alloy steels by as much as 30 ksi with no loss in ductility or toughness.
