Book Ranking Crop Yield Models Using Out of Sample Likelihood Functions

Download or read book Ranking Crop Yield Models Using Out of Sample Likelihood Functions written by F. Bailey Norwood and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been considerable debate regarding which probability distribution best represents crop yields. This study ranks six yield densities based on their out-of-sample forecasting performance. The forecasting ability for each density was ranked according to its likelihood function value when observed at out-of-sample observations. Results show that a semiparametric model offered by Goodwin and Ker best forecasts county average yields.

Book Ranking Crop Yield Models

Download or read book Ranking Crop Yield Models written by Octavio A. Ramirez and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comment discusses key specification issues that may have affected the performance and, therefore, the ranking of parametric models that were compared in a recent AJAE article. A procedure to obtain the most flexible parametric model specification possible, given the particular probability distribution function on which the model is based is presented. These specifications also allow for standardized and, therefore, more valid comparisons across parametric models that are based on different probability distributions. Finally, the comment cautions against generalization of the rankings in that AJAE article and recommends that these more flexible specifications be adopted in future comparisons and applications.

Book Mathematical Models of Crop Growth and Yield

Download or read book Mathematical Models of Crop Growth and Yield written by Allen R. Overman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-08-27 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting effective, analytical functions that have been found useful for the comparison of alternative management techniques to maximize water and nutrient resources, this reference describes the application of viable mathematical models in data analysis to increase crop growth and yields. Featuring solutions to various differential equations, the book covers the characteristics of the functions related to the phenomenological growth model. Including more than 1300 literature citations, display equations, tables, and figures and outlining an approach to mathematical crop modeling, Mathematical Models of Crop Growth and Yield will prove an invaluable resource.

Book Evaluating Yield Models for Crop Insurance Rating

Download or read book Evaluating Yield Models for Crop Insurance Rating written by Christopher Lanoue and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop insurance performance and loss rates depend directly on underlying crop yield distributions. However, there still exists much debate about how to represent the underlying crop yield distributions. Using farm-level corn and soybean yields from 1972-2008, this study examines in-sample goodness-of-fit measures of both the whole distribution and the insurance tail to compare a set of flexible parametric, semi-parametric, and non-parametric distributions in a meaningful economic context. Simulations are then conducted to investigate the out-of-sample efficiency properties of several competing distributions. The results indicate that more parameterized distributional forms fit the data better in-sample, but are generally less efficient out-of-sample - and in some cases more biased - than more parsimonious forms which also fit the data adequately, such as the Weibull. The results highlight the relative advantages of alternative distributions, in terms of the bias-efficiency tradeoff in both in- and out-of-sample frameworks.

Book Modern Techniques for Agricultural Disease Management and Crop Yield Prediction

Download or read book Modern Techniques for Agricultural Disease Management and Crop Yield Prediction written by Pradeep, N. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since agriculture is one of the key parameters in assessing the gross domestic product (GDP) of any country, it has become crucial to transition from traditional agricultural practices to smart agriculture. New agricultural technologies provide numerous opportunities to maximize crop yield by recognizing and analyzing diseases and other natural variables that may affect it. Therefore, it is necessary to understand how computer-assisted technologies can best be utilized and adopted in the conversion to smart agriculture. Modern Techniques for Agricultural Disease Management and Crop Yield Prediction is an essential publication that widens the spectrum of computational methods that can aid in agriculture disease management, weed detection, and crop yield prediction. Featuring coverage on a wide range of topics such as soil and crop sensors, swarm robotics, and weed detection, this book is ideally designed for environmentalists, farmers, botanists, agricultural engineers, computer engineers, scientists, researchers, practitioners, and students seeking current research on technology and techniques for agricultural diseases and predictive trends.
