Book excerpt: Revealed to the world in 1948, the Land-Rover not only revived the Rover Company's fortunes in an austerity-riddled post-war period, but galvanized its future, thanks to the model's almost immediate success. With the manufacture of an initial 48 'pre-production' examples coming to a close, the first official production models were assembled - starting with chassis 860001. As original factory records prove, this pivotal vehicle was destined for His Royal Highness King George VI, but the decision was made to postpone the presentation and instead, 'number one' was retained by the factory until 1950, when it was registered JUE 477 before leaving Rover Company ownership. After decades left out in the cold and exposed to the elements, 860001 had certainly seen better days, but thanks to the determination of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, founder and Chairman of INEOS, the future of JUE 477 was secured in 2017. Over the next two years, a dedicated team of experts, led by chief restorer, Julian Shoolheifer set about restoring the vehicle while retaining as much of its original DNA as was physically, and safely, possible and making sure that this remarkable vehicle's history and past life was still worn with pride.

Book Torn Trousers A True Story of Courage and Adventure How A Couple Sacrificed Everything To Escape to Paradise

Download or read book Torn Trousers A True Story of Courage and Adventure How A Couple Sacrificed Everything To Escape to Paradise written by Andrew St Pierre White and published by 4xOverland. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What could possibly go wrong in paradise? Tired of mortgage payments, thirty-something Andrew and Gwynn sold nearly everything they owned but their Siamese cat and escaped their humdrum nine-to-five existence for life in paradise—a tiny island in one of the remotest spots on Earth: the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Woefully inexperienced, they took control of a luxury game lodge that catered to the likes of French aristocrats, Hollywood directors, Mafia lawyers, and the captain of the England cricket team. Not forgetting the hippos who liked to crash cocktail hour. Trouble soon followed as the reality of running a hotel on an island accessible only by boat or plane burst upon them. Andrew and Gwynn learned it's one thing for guests to wake up with gentle giraffes outside their windows, but it's quite another to keep them safe from poisonous snakes, temperamental elephants, and a hyena with a taste for plastic. All that was child's play compared to figuring out how to feed their guests when a 'quick run' to the grocery store required a plane, a bush pilot, and moderate risk to life, limb, and property. By turns funny, touching, and suspenseful, Torn Trousers is a real modern fairytale about getting exactly what you wished for…and then having to live with it. Scroll up and buy to escape to Africa today!

Download or read book First Overland written by Tim Slessor and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Not? After all, no-one had ever done it before. It would be one of the longest of all overland journeys – half way round the world, from the English Channel to Singapore. They knew that several expeditions had already tried it. Some had got as far as the desrts of Persia; a few had even reached the plains of India. But no one had managed to go on from there: over the jungle clad mountains of Assam and across northern Burma to Thailand and Malaya. Over the last 3,000 miles it seemed there were ‘just too many rivers and too few roads'. But no-one really knew … In fact, their problems began much earlier than that. As mere undergraduates, they had no money, no cars, nothing. But with a cool audacity, which was to become characteristic, they set to work – wheedling and cajoling. First, they coaxed the BBC to come up with some film for a possible TV series. They then gently persuaded the manufacturers to lend them two factory-fresh Land Rovers. A publisher was even sweet-talked into giving them an advance on a book. By the time they were ready to go, their sponsors (more than 80 of them) ranged from whiskey distillers to the makers of collapsible buckets. In late 1955, they set off. Seven months and 12,000 miles later, two very weary Land Rovers, escorted by police outriders, rolled into Singapore – to flash bulbs and champagne. Now, fifty years on, their book, ‘First Overland', is republished – with a foreword by Sir David Attenborough. After all, it was he who gave them that film.

Book SAS Combat Vehicles 1942 91

Download or read book SAS Combat Vehicles 1942 91 written by Gavin Mortimer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise illustrated history of the Special Air Service's lightweight, heavily armed vehicles and their combat use. The SAS, the world's most famous special operations unit, made its name in the desert of North Africa, shooting up Axis airfields from specially modified Willys jeeps. Following the start of the El Alamein offensive in October 1942, the SAS used jeeps effectively in reconnoitring and ambushing the retreating Afrika Korps. After the conclusion of the North African campaign, the Willys underwent several small but significant changes, including the introduction of the .303 Browning machine gun. Between June and October 1944, the SAS brigade operated deep inside Occupied France, harassing Germans reinforcements heading to Normandy, calling up air strikes on installations, and carrying out reconnaissance missions - all made possible with jeeps dropped by the RAF. Jeeps were also used in the push into Germany in the spring of 1945. Transported across the Rhine in 'Buffalo' amphibious landing craft, they formed part of the vanguard of the Allied advance, and their agility, speed and firepower proved crucial in crushing fanatical pockets of Nazi resistance. 22SAS in 1952, the regiment adopted the Series 1 Land Rover - introduced in 1948 - as the successor to the Willys jeep. A decade later the Regiment updated to the Series IIA 90 Land Rover, which saw service in the Oman and Aden, where its distinctive colour led to the 'Pink Panther' nickname. In the 1970s, the SAS begin using Range Rovers for covert operations while the Land Rover 110 HCPU became the SAS's new Desert Patrol Vehicle (DPV) in the 1991 Gulf War. This book describes the successful deployment of these combat vehicles in SAS operations from the Second World War to the present day and gives a rare insight into one of the most prestigious and secret forces of modern times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As U.S. and Canadian automakers and dealers face bankruptcy and Toyota battles unprecedented quality-control problems, Lemon-Aid guides steer the confused and anxious buyer through the economic meltdown unlike any other car-and-truck books on the market. Phil Edmonston, Canada’s automotive "Dr. Phil" for more than 40 years, pulls no punches. In this all-new guide he says: Chrysler’s days are numbered with the dubious help of Fiat. Electric cars and ethanol power are PR gimmicks. Diesel and natural gas are the future. Be wary of "zombie" vehicles: Jaguar, Land Rover, Saab, and Volvo. Mercedes-Benz – rich cars, poor quality. There’s only one Saturn you should buy. Toyota – enough apologies: "when you mess up, ’fess up."

Book Murder at the Library of Congress

Download or read book Murder at the Library of Congress written by Margaret Truman and published by Fawcett. This book was released on 2009-07-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Truman looks inside one of D.C.'s great institutions, the Library of Congress, the place where much of the wisdom of the nation is collected, and finds blood on the floor. Was there a second diary, beyond the one Columbus kept, describing his voyage to the New World? Leading scholars at the Library of Congress think so, and Annabel Smith, with her pre-Columbian interests, has been commissioned by the library's magazine, Civilization, to write about it. She is not the only person interested. Word comes through the rare-books black market that a wealthy bibliophile has been offered the second diary: He'd not only pay, he'd almost kill to possess it. Starting her search in the library itself, Annabel soon finds herself competing with an ambitious TV journalist. As both women come closer to finding the hidden documents, other questions creep up. Was the murder of the library's most prominent Hispanic scholar connected to the missing diary? Further research leads them deeper into barely explored corners of the library and closer to having to face their own mortality. Murder in familiar yet surprising surroundings- a great library- leads to a surprising conclusion in this latest Capital Crime novel.

Download or read book Truck written by DK and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lavishly illustrated celebration of trucks and trucking, from the first motorized wagons to the advent of electric, driverless freight vehicles. Charting decade after decade of innovation and change, The Truck Book is a beautifully illustrated history of trucks, trucking culture, and the romance of the open road. Trucks, semis, and vans share their origins in the steam wagons of the 1800s and the invention of the modern combustion engine in the 1870s. As steam power gave way to gas and diesel engines, trucks evolved and diversified according to their desired purpose - becoming everything from panel vans and pickup trucks to heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), or construction trucks, such as log carriers or concrete transporters. Military forces worldwide soon realized the value in these vehicles, and so they played a defining role in the wars of the 20th century. In the meantime, they have also saved lives as ambulances and fire trucks and entertained the masses in the form of monster trucks. The Truck Book showcases the most important and iconic makes and models of every era - from the Ford TT to the Bedford TM Turbo 92 Series, to the Toyota Hilux. Along the way, it evokes the freedom and nostalgia of the open road, explores trucking culture, and shows how trucks and trucking companies, such as Mack and UPS, have won a place in fans' hearts. Weaving together stunning photographic catalogs with specially commissioned "visual tours," feature spreads on truck models, designers, and manufacturers, as well as on milestone events or technological developments over the last 200 years, The Truck Book is the most comprehensive and best-illustrated title available on the subject.
