Book South Carolina s Turkish People

Download or read book South Carolina s Turkish People written by Terri Ann Ognibene and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2018-04-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of misunderstood immigrants and their struggle to gain recognition and acceptance in the rural South Despite its reputation as a melting pot of ethnicities and races, the United States has a well-documented history of immigrants who have struggled through isolation, segregation, discrimination, oppression, and assimilation. South Carolina is home to one such group—known historically and derisively as "the Turks"—which can trace its oral history back to Joseph Benenhaley, an Ottoman refugee from Old World conflict. According to its traditional narrative, Benenhaley served with Gen. Thomas Sumter in the Revolutionary War. His dark-hued descendants lived insular lives in rural Sumter County for the next two centuries, and only in recent decades have they enjoyed the full blessings of the American experience. Early scholars ignored the Turkish tale and labeled these people "tri-racial isolates" and later writers disparaged them as "so-called Turks." But members of the group persisted in claiming Turkish descent and living reclusively for generations. Now, in South Carolina's Turkish People, Terri Ann Ognibene and Glen Browder confirm the group's traditional narrative through exhaustive original research and oral interviews. In search of definitive documentation, Browder combed through a long list of primary sources, including historical reports, public records, and private papers. He also devised new evidence, such as a reconstruction of Turkish lineage of the 1800s through genealogical analysis and genetic testing. Ognibene, a descendant of the state's Turkish population, conducted personal interviews with her relatives who had been in the community since the 1900s. They talked at length and passionately about their cultural identity, their struggle for equal rights, and the mixed benefits of assimilation. Ognibene's and Browder's findings are clear. South Carolina's Turkish people finally know and can celebrate their heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Long Life More than forty years ago I edited the autobiography of the Rev. W. Walford. This book, which fully answers to its name, is a remarkable production, entering into the secrets of the author's soul, unveiling the struggles and sorrows of a mysterious experience. The work now published is of a very different kind. It really relates to others more than to myself, and brings within view some incidents of religious history and aspects of personal character more interesting than any confined to my own experience. I presents associations during a long period spent in various work, in distant journeys, and in friendly intercourse with many distinguished persons. Book Random Recollections Classic Reprint

Download or read book Random Recollections Classic Reprint written by Henry B. Stanton and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Random Recollections Though no portions of the first and second editions of this work were on sale, they were soon exhausted in supply ing calls on me for copies. The requests in numerous news papers and letters that I would place the book where it could be purchased, amounted almost to a rebuke for my not hav ing done this. In compliance with this desire, I have spent a few weeks in preparing a third edition, which will be issued and sold by a book-publishing house. The new matter in this third edition makes the volume about two thirds larger than the second edition, and about three times as large as the first. This production is neither a history, a biography, nor an autobiography, but is exactly what it professes to be, namely, some random recollections of the writer. It will be well to read it from that point of View. Such value as this draft on my memory may possess is mainly due to the fact that in describing events and men I have usually told only what I personally knew of them and, perhaps better than all, I have tried to stop when I was done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Long Life, Vol. 1 of 2: 1786-1816 He was now only twenty-four, and had filled his life well. He is not less diligent on his return, when his journal becomes a faithful reflection of the London season, with its distinctions and pomposities and ineptitudes, its lions, its coxcombs, and its bores. He sees Mrs. Siddons take leave of the stage as Lady Macbeth, sees and studies Kean, condemns Mrs. Jordan. He is present when Byron speaks, and keeps the House of Lords in convulsions of laughter; he hears Sidmouth's experiences as the playmate of the younger Pitt under the awful eye of Chatham he listens to Sheridan's vivid and piquant reminiscences. He travels again, and sees something of the horrors of the war of 1813, sees Bernadotte in curl-papers, and the Prince de Ligne in his famous little doll's house at Vienna. Wherever he goes he makes the best of himself and of this world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
