Book excerpt: While the growth in both numbers and influence of Hispanics in North American Catholicism and Protestantism has been commented on widely, up until now there has been no systematic attempt to define a Hispanic theology. Roberto Goizueta, a Cuban-American theologian, aware that "Hispanic" and "Latino" can be terms imposed artificially on diverse peoples, finds a common link in the Spanish language and in a shared culture. Central to this culture is the experience of exile, of being a people at the margins of a society, who must find and make their way together. Central also is faith, and its grounding in this experience of being in exile. In delineating the very particular nature and worldview of Hispanic/Latino theology, Caminemos con Jesus challenges both traditional Euro-American theologies and modern Western epistemological assumptions. It examines the implications of this theological method for the Church and the academy, as well as for the future of the Latino community and North American society. Caminemos con Jesus provides lessons in discipleship for non-Hispanics and Hispanics alike, for students of contemporary theology, and all those engaged in pastoral and church-based work.

Once the terrorist found out they had been stung the Commander sent a squad of investigators to find and retrieve their money. ----- Despite DJ’s view of law enforcement his neighbor and friend Ezee asked Jimmy, a retired law enforcement officer to keep DJ safe, not an easy task. ----- Sensing something violent was about to go down Jimmy called an FBI agent friend and his former police partner. They arrived in time to back Jimmy up as a gunfight erupted inside and outside of Jimmy’s warehouse. ----- Every agency known by three letters that were within driving distance sent an agent to the warehouse. All of them demanded DJ come clean and tell them who and what he got himself involved with.

In response, Reconstruction-era governor Edmund J. Davis created a statewide police force that could be mobilized whenever and wherever local authorities were unable or unwilling to control lawlessness. During its three years (1870–1873) of existence, however, the Texas State Police was reviled as an arm of the Radical Republican party and widely condemned for being oppressive, arrogant, staffed with criminals and African Americans, and expensive to maintain, as well as for enforcing the new and unpopular laws that protected the rights of freed slaves. Drawing extensively on the wealth of previously untouched records in the Texas State Archives, as well as other contemporary sources, Barry A. Crouch and Donaly E. Brice here offer the first major objective assessment of the Texas State Police and its role in maintaining law and order in Reconstruction Texas. Examining the activities of the force throughout its tenure and across the state, the authors find that the Texas State Police actually did much to solve the problem of violence in a largely lawless state. Prisoners were subjected to constant harassments, endless abuses, physical attacks, and starvation, which resulted to severe injuries, diseases, long-term illnesses, and deaths. Meager help from other foreigners, the locals, and the Red Cross flowed over and through the fence but came to a halt after the Japanese sealed the entire perimeter. To survive, they clung to their faith on the US military, on one another, and in God. However, they never felt more helpless and more isolated than when the American forces surrendered to the Japanese after the fall of Bataan and Corregidor. Dr. Celeste Craig, her husband Adam, and their two young children were brutally arrested, and their home severely ravaged by the Japanese. Celeste and the children were interned at Santo Tomas; Adam was taken someplace else.
