Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambling Recollections, Vol. 1 of 2 Unfortunately, what are called my declining years have not been overcrowded with enjoyment; but among my pleasanter recollections are those of Americans like Consuelo, Duchess of Manchester; her sister. Lady Lister Kaye; Mrs. Adair, and Lady Randolph Churchill. These friends being still alive let us hope for many years to come I venture neither to eulogise nor to criticise. I have also much to say of gratitude to the family of the late Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, to Lord and Lady Londonderry, to Lady Chesterfield, and to Mr. and Mrs. George Bankes and their family, from all of whom I have received many acts of kindness. I may say the same of the late Duke of Wellington a man of extraordinary common sense and irresistible humour. If it were my misfortune to write any sequel to this book, I should have much to say that space has now forced me to omit. I feel under great obligations to Sir Edward Grey and to other members of the Foreign Office for the facilities they have given me in connection with this work. My warm thanks are also due to the Russian Ambassador and to the Persian charge d'affaires. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Rambling Recollections an Autobiography written by A. D. Rockwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambling Recollections an Autobiography The sun nears the western sky, and sitting by my peaceful fireside, memories come trooping on to cheer and comfort me. One has said "in the circle of life the nearer we are to the end, the closer are we to the beginning," and so in the following pages I have lingered long, perhaps too long, over my boyhood days. They have ever brought pleasant thoughts to me - my only apology for their prominence in these recollections. Written originally for the perusal of my children only, this story of my life has unwittingly crept between these two covers. If any other readers can find a grain of pleasure herein in whiling away a few hours, I shall be doubly repaid for my efforts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambling Recollections, Vol. 2 of 2 You may easily imagine why nothing is done, as well as why no one is punished. Add to this, when the Turks were induced to abandon their former laws and usages, no new laws practicable under the circumstances were given to them; whilst a number of general principles were laid down which the Turks naturally say Should be applied in one way and the Christians in another. In this manner the jealousy it was intended to assuage has been immeasurably increased, and confusion added to inaction and impunity. Still, despite these and other changes, the place and people remained very much as of old. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Reflections: An Auto of Half a Century and More If there is any merit in my desultory writings, having been a scribbler off and on through life, it consists in thor ough conviction and pointedness of expression. Those who object to that style might as well close the little volume. Rosewater and diluted catnip is repugnant to taste, and un suited to my genius. The field is already overcrowded with that sort, men who shun a positive, unequivocal expression of Opinion on men, measures, and policies, as they would a from a catapult. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiographical Recollections, Vol. 2 of 2 Morse and I find ourselves very comfortable in our new lodgings, and I hope we shall not change again very soon. Our landlady has a very pretty daughter, which is one very great recommendation to her lodgings. By the bye, we shall not now be able to hear of King's arrival very soon. If he delivers the letter I gave him to mother, I hope you will all show him a good deal of attention, as he was a very great friend to me here. I am sure you will like him, for he is very agreeable, has read a good deal, and, from the opportunities I have had of judging, I think he has an excellent heart as well as head. He will be able to give you a good account of me, of the manner in which I live, &c. There is one quality that I found in King which pleased me much, because it is a scarce one, he does not flatter. Book Wandering Recollections of a Somewhat Busy Life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wandering Recollections of a Somewhat Busy Life: An Autobiography I am called upon for a Preface. Like the "weary knife-grinder, when asked for a story, I am half tempted to answer, "Preface! God bless you! I've none to give, sir!" My book itself is only a Preface. And what, after all, is any Life but a preface? - a preface to something better - or worse? On the whole, therefore, I think it safer for me, and better for the reader, whom I hope to be on good terms with, before he gets through, whatever may be his present notions upon the subject, not to trouble him with a Preface. Book Recollections Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections Classic Reprint written by Washington Gladden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections Most of the boys and girls of my grandfather's family found employment on the farms and in the farmhouses of the vicinage. It was a plain countryside, lying west of Mount Tom and not far from its base the quiet est and most decorous neighborhood, I suppose, in all the world, and so they called it Bedlam. I remember, very well, my father's talk about his old home, his glowing pictures of Mount Tom, over whose brow the sun rose every morning, and whose rocky slopes were infested with rattlesnakes. My father's health, in his youth, was frail; he was nu able to do the rough work of the farms, and the family seems to have determined to make a scholar of him. There was an academy of some note at Southampton, and thither he was sent; he worked for his board in the family of a good physician, who took special interest in him, and thus gained his equipment for the work of a teacher. Before he was of age he began teaching in the country towns of Hampshire County when I lived in the Connecticut valley, in later days, I used to meet men, now and then, who had been his pupils, and who carried his name in grateful memory. Book Recollections of My Nonexistence

Download or read book Recollections of My Nonexistence written by Rebecca Solnit and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An electric portrait of the artist as a young woman that asks how a writer finds her voice in a society that prefers women to be silent In Recollections of My Nonexistence, Rebecca Solnit describes her formation as a writer and as a feminist in 1980s San Francisco, in an atmosphere of gender violence on the street and throughout society and the exclusion of women from cultural arenas. She tells of being poor, hopeful, and adrift in the city that became her great teacher; of the small apartment that, when she was nineteen, became the home in which she transformed herself; of how punk rock gave form and voice to her own fury and explosive energy. Solnit recounts how she came to recognize the epidemic of violence against women around her, the street harassment that unsettled her, the trauma that changed her, and the authority figures who routinely disdained and disbelieved girls and women, including her. Looking back, she sees all these as consequences of the voicelessness that was and still is the ordinary condition of women, and how she contended with that while becoming a writer and a public voice for women's rights. She explores the forces that liberated her as a person and as a writer--books themselves, the gay men around her who offered other visions of what gender, family, and joy could be, and her eventual arrival in the spacious landscapes and overlooked conflicts of the American West. These influences taught her how to write in the way she has ever since, and gave her a voice that has resonated with and empowered many others.

Book Bygone Years

Download or read book Bygone Years written by F. Leveson Gower and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bygone Years: Recollections T has been often remarked that few men above the age of eighty retain any activity of mind. Although I have long passed that age, I do not perceive that my mind, which was never active, is less so than it was. What is gradually failing me is memory, and if I am to relate a few incidents of my life, I must do so at once. I cannot attempt to write an autobiography, but merely to jot down some recollections which may be found of interest. It is curious how uncertain memory becomes at an advanced age. Whilst I remember a number of unimportant events, I find it difficult to call to mind the broad outlines of my life. I can, therefore, only offer a disconnected account of it, for which I crave the indulgence of any one who may be inclined to glance over these pages. It may be extended to me because the whole of these recollections have been written since I attained my eighty-sixth birthday, and because I possess no notes or journals to assist me, except those from which I have taken descriptions of Spain, India and Russia, which I wrote at the request of my uncle, the Duke of Devonshire. Book Recollections and Incidents of a Lifetime

Download or read book Recollections and Incidents of a Lifetime written by Philander Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Incidents of a Lifetime: Or Men and Things I Have Seen; In a Series of Familiar Letters to a Friend; Historical, Autobiographical, Anecdotal and Descriptive I will, therefore, invite you to go with me, in imagination, over the principal scenes I have witnessed, carrying you back to my boyhood days - to my early country life, in which I was born and bred. The history will be, essentially, a personal narrative - simple, commonplace, nothing marvelous, or out of the beaten track of common experience. In regard to many of the events I shall have occasion to describe, the character and characteristics of men and things I shall portray, my connection was only that of a spectator. How far the recollection of those early days will serve me as I try to arrange them upon the thread of my memory, remains to be seen; and I must crave your kind indulgence to overlook all mistakes. Download or read book Recollections of Frontier Life Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Ann Roe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Frontier Life When I can first recollect (through the'perseverance and enterprise of a Yankee Colony that settled there in 17 99) it was dotted all over with neat dwellings and good gardens, producing every variety of vegetables and flowers that the mind could well conceive, yielding not only plenty but an abundance to the diligent hand. While these bluffs were covered with a variety of timber, wild fruit and flowers. The timber consisted of elm, ash, hickory, walnut and sugar-maple, from which the early settlers made a great quantity of sugar and molasses, a great luxury I assure you, at that time. The fruit consisted of grapes, blackberries, crab-apples, 'paupaus, dewberries, and many others. There was a great variety of wild flowers, from the gorgeous white and purple flower of the dog wood and the pink flush of the red-bud tree, to the tiny violet, arrayed in its modest robe of blue and white. (how beautiful is this tiny flower in its simplicity and humility, sending forth its rich perfume through the air, while growing so humbly at our feet.) Here I was allowed to ramble at pleasure through these scenes of romance and beauty, constantly attended by my brother, who was two years older than myself, and sometimes a number of boys and girls would join us in our rambles over the bluffs and through the lovely valley. We have often Spent half a day at a time in one of these rambles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
