Download or read book Kamba Ramayana written by P S Sundaram and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2002-05-03 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterly translation of the Tamil version of Ramayana The epic story of Rama, which is part of the Indian collective consciousness, has been retold in many regional languages. Pre-eminent among the many vernacular retellings of the Ramayana is the twelfth-century Tamil version by Kamban. The son of a temple drummer, Kamban is reputed to have had an impressive mastery of Tamil and Sanskrit classics. Fascinated by the lore of Ramayana, he immersed himself totally in it. Though Kamban acknowledges his indebtedness to the Sanskrit version of the Ramayana by Valmiki, his is an independent work, enriched by various religious, philosophical and literary influences. The Kamba Ramayana differs from Valmiki’s in significant ways. Though cast in the heroic mould of a Purushotama or ‘the best among men’, Valmiki’s Rama is still a man. Kamban, on the other hand, never allows the reader to forget the godhood of Rama. His Ravana too, though flawed, is a heroic figure. While Valmiki’s diction is sparse and direct, Kamban’s exuberant prose sparkles with wit and inventiveness. Translated into English by the late P.S. Sundaram, this edition has been abridged and edited by his long-time friend N.S. Jagannathan. Though pared down from the original six volumes to a single one, this translation retains the magic and poetry of the original.
Download or read book The History of Earth written by Dr. Prashobh Karunakaran and published by Author House. This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ancient times, humans have been asking, why we are here, where we come from and where we are going? Science gives some clues. This book amalgamates information gathered from the ancient culture of India with knowledge gathered through modern science to decipher what has transpired so far. The book explains why the world will not end in nuclear conflict or global warming problems any time soon despite the overwhelming evidence for it. The time spans or yugas will have to finish. Another concern of people today is the increasing power in the hands of the few. This is not something new and what happened to people who tried to gain absolute power in the past is depicted in this book as a reference for today's power brokers. Almost absolute power was in the hands of the few many times in the past and if these few follow wrong paths, God has consistently intervened.
Download or read book Ramakatha Rasavahini Volume 2 written by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba and published by Sri Sathya Sai Media Centre. This book was released on 2014-11-23 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Ramakatha Rasavahini improves on the previous edition. Grammatical errors and typos have been corrected, and some sentences have been rewritten to smooth and clarify the presentation —of course, without disturbing the meaning. Long paragraphs have been split in two to provide easier reading. Sanskrit words have been replaced by English equivalents, to make the text accessible to readers who do not know Sanskrit. The accuracy of the text has been maintained by putting Sanskrit words in parentheses, after their English translations. Several Sanskrit words have made their way into the English language and can be found in most dictionaries —e.g. dharma, guru, yoga, and moksha. These words are mostly used without translation, although their meanings appear in the glossary at the end of the book. Besides definition of Sanskrit words used in this book, the glossary contains descriptions of the people and places mentioned. This edition is being brought out in ebook form, for tablets such as the Kindle, Ipad, and Nook. Clicking on most Sanskrit words, people, and places will take you right to the glossary, where you can find the meaning. A back-button will be available in your reader to take you back to where you were reading. And on these tablets, you generally get to choose a font and font size that suits you. With these changes, we hope that the revised Ramakatha Rasavahini will be of great benefit to earnest seekers in the spiritual realm. Download or read book Jagamohana Ramayana The Epic of Balarama Dasa written by Priyadarshi Bahinipati and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main topics of ancient Sanskrit literature and medieval literature from different parts of India are Rama and Krishna oriented themes. From Valmiki Ramayana in Sanskrit to Ramayana in different vernacular languages of Tamil, Telgu, Malayalam, Kannada, Assamese, Gujarati, Bengali, Odishi, Marathi and Hindi, all have proceeded from the rudimentary stage of local language literature to become Mahakavyas in their respective areas and reached every nook and corners of the region, galvanizing the minds and hearts of the populace. Although they have been composed in different periods and the poets and composers have a different style of presentation of their own, they acquired the status of original spokespersons of Ramayana in their respective regions. It is a fact that Indian languages and literature are enriched by the form, content, ideas and ideologies of the epics of yesteryears. After Rama became accepted as an incarnation of Vishnu and after the popularization of devotion of Rama in the fourteenth century, all literature was intertwined in the current of a feeling of love and devotion. This trend has been manifested in the work of Balarama Dasa, one of the doyens of litterateurs of medieval Odisha. He equated Rama with Lord Jagannath and named his version of Ramayana as Jagamohana Ramayana itself. He belonged to a group of litterateurs who were famous in the history of Odisha as Panchasakhas and were known for their sublimity, egalitarianism and intellectualism. It is always important to revisit the works of literature of different periods to find out about the state of mind of those writers and composers who generated their literary marvels to establish their views emphatically with a reformative approach. In Odisha, the Panchasakhas were the champions of liberty, fraternity and equality. Therefore, it is even more important to analyse their works again to escalate the idea of free thought and expression and rescue the gamut of their opinions and ideas from intellectual hibernation.
Download or read book Hanuman s Tale written by Philip Lutgendorf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hanuman, the devoted monkey helper of Rama and Sita, has long been recognized as a popular character in India's ancient Ramayana epic. But more recently he has also become one of the most beloved and worshiped gods in the Hindu pantheon - enshrined in majestic new temples, but equally present in poster art, advertising, and mass media. Drawing on Sanskrit and vernacular texts, classical iconography and modern TV serials, and extensive fieldwork and interviews, Philip Lutgendorf challenges the academic cliché of Hanuman as a "minor" or "folk" deity by exploring his complex and growing role in South Asian religion and culture. This wide-ranging study examines the historical evolution of Hanuman's worship, his close association with Shiva and goddesses, his invocation in tantric ritual, his physical immortality and enduring presence in sacred sites, and his appeal to devotees who include scholars, wrestlers, healers, politicians, and middle-class urbanites. Lutgendorf also offers a rich array of entertaining stories not previously available in English: an expanding epic cycle that he christens the "Hanumayana." Arguing that Hanuman's role as cosmic "middle man" is intimately linked to his embodiment in a charming and provocative simian form, Lutgendorf moves beyond the Indian subcontinent to interrogate the wider human fascination with anthropoid primates as boundary beings and as potent signifiers of both Self and Other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What is the meaning of a vast, deep sea if love wishes to cross it and dive into it, my friend?” sang Anila. The monkeys all stopped their work to dance and answer Anila’s riddle. “The sea will become a lake and love will become a pair of golden puppets on the water’s surface. The depth of the ocean will vanish, the vastness of the sea will be crossed and the pair of golden puppets will bathe in the lake.” “What is the meaning of two very distant lands if love wishes to unite them, my friend?” asked Cucak Rawun. “The vast land will become but a handful of earth traversed by the wings of love. Who else, other than love, can fly like a bolt of lightning? Not just land, but even heaven can be crossed in just an instant if love flies with its wings,” answered the monkeys in response to Cucak Rawun’s song. “What is the meaning of a high and mighty mountain if love wishes to destroy it, my friend?” Kapi Menda sang loudly and melodiously. “The mountain will be razed to the ground and the lovers who were hiding on opposite sides of it will face each other. Even though they had been yearning for each other when they were apart, they will be shy when the mountain that had kept them apart collapses. But as the power of the mountain crumbles, their shyness will also crumble and they will embrace each other on the remains of the mountain that once separated them,” answered the monkeys. *** Herding the Wind is a beautiful retelling from the great epic Ramayana. This book tells the story about the journey of Rama and Sita, their exile and pursuit of love. Not only recites divine characters, this book also tells about unique characters like Anoman and bajang child who bring hope and joy. Since it was first published, this book gained widely acceptance among readers.
