Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rama and the Dragon, a multi-layered novel about the depths of human experience and the struggle between polarities, on the surface presents a love story of unrequited passion between Rama -- the symbol of multiplicity and creativity -- and Mikhail -- the symbol of unity and constancy. Their story reflects the relationship not only between man and woman, Copt and Muslim, but also between Upper and Lower Egypt. Through a delicate grid of intertextual references and juxtaposed narratives, the dreams and hopes, fears and defeats of Rama and Mikhail move from the local to the global, corresponding to human dreams and anxieties everywhere. In this novel, Edwar al-Kharrat has created a unique form of narrative discourse in which he presents Egyptian realities and actualities of the 1960s and 1970s, with flashbacks to as early as the 1940s, in an aesthetic form that highlights historical moments while blending philosophical, mythical, and psychological perspectives in a literary parallel to the cinematic technique of montage. In their citation awarding al-Kharrat the Mahfouz Medal, the judges stated: ''Rama and the Dragon is considered a breakthrough in the literary history of modern Arabic fiction.''

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before being betrayed and imprisoned, Parlee must find her way through sleepy villages, a guarded bridge, a mysterious cove and an enchanted forest on her way to Braunfield Castle. In her pocket she carries one of the three Dragon Keys which legend says holds the freedom of her world, and a scheming Generals power in check. No truly noble quest would be complete without an entourage of diverse companions, and Parlee and the Dragon Keys provides them. Miles: a humble donkey cart driver who offers Parlee a ride and has a familiar face that she cant quite place. Through Parlees youthful eyes he seems old and worn, but in his case looks are deceiving. Kig: a dashing swordsman, with questionable credentials, is Parlees soul-mate, but true love never follows a straight course which puts their devotion to one another to the test. Smolder: a Moon Dragon who is eager to learn more about humans and quickly forms a bond with Parlee; but even this sweet-natured friend has an agenda of his own. One of these three friends will betray her, one will deliver her to the enemy and the third will desert her for a pretty face. Knowing all this in advance will not help you to untangle the web of intrigue and plot deceptions that will lead you on an adventure with a twist of faith.

Book The Anchor Book of Modern Arabic Fiction

Download or read book The Anchor Book of Modern Arabic Fiction written by Denys Johnson-Davies and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dazzling anthology features the work of seventy-nine outstanding writers from all over the Arab-speaking world, from Morocco in the west to Iraq in the east, Syria in the north to Sudan in the south. Edited by Denys Johnson-Davies, called by Edward Said “the leading Arabic-to-English translator of our time,” this treasury of Arab voices is diverse in styles and concerns, but united by a common language. It spans the full history of modern Arabic literature, from its roots in western cultural influence at the end of the nineteenth century to the present-day flowering of Naguib Mahfouz’s literary sons and daughters. Among the Egyptian writers who laid the foundation for the Arabic literary renaissance are the great Tawfik al-Hakim; the short story pioneer Mahmoud Teymour; and Yusuf Idris, who embraced Egypt’s vibrant spoken vernacular. An excerpt from the Sudanese writer Tayeb Salih’s novel Season of Migration to the North, one of the Arab world’s finest, appears alongside the Libyan writer Ibrahim al-Koni’s tales of the Tuaregs of North Africa, the Iraqi writer Mohamed Khudayir’s masterly story “Clocks Like Horses,” and the work of such women writers as Lebanon’s Hanan al-Shaykh and Morocco’s Leila Abouzeid.

Book Lotus Lake Dragon Pool

Download or read book Lotus Lake Dragon Pool written by Trevor Leggett and published by TLAYT. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected by the author over many years, these stories from the Yoga and Zen traditions are the flint and steel that strike a spark that lights up the mind with insights that one should ponder daily to bring to light ever deeper meaning. They may be similar in intent to Zen Koans – but they are rather different in content. TIn many Zen Koans someone says or does something extraordinarily inappropriate, which catches your attention just because it's extraordinary –but afterwards the light from them has to be applied to daily life. In contrast, the stories here are often ordinary incidents from ordinary lives (not that there aren't some extraordinary ones too!) that nevertheless open the mind's eye to the vast potential for realization and inspiration to be found in daily life.

Book excerpt: “In science fiction there is only a handful of books that stretch the mind—and this is one of them.”—Arthur C. Clarke In a moving story of sacrifice and triumph, human scientists establish a relationship with intelligent lifeforms—the cheela—living on Dragon’s Egg, a neutron star where one Earth hour is equivalent to hundreds of their years. The cheela culturally evolve from savagery to the discovery of science, and for a brief time, men are their diligent teachers. Praise for Dragon’s Egg “Bob Forward writes in the tradition of Hal Clement’s Mission of Gravity and carries it a giant step (how else?) forward.”—Isaac Asimov “Dragon’s Egg is superb. I couldn’t have written it; it required too much real physics.”—Larry Niven “This is one for the real science-fiction fan.”—Frank Herbert “Robert L. Forward tells a good story and asks a profound question. If we run into a race of creatures who live a hundred years while we live an hour, what can they say to us or we to them?”—Freeman J. Dyson “Forward has impeccable scientific credentials, and . . . big, original, speculative ideas.”—The Washington Post

Book excerpt: A timely look at the impact of China’s booming emergence on the countries of Southeast Asia Today, Southeast Asia stands uniquely exposed to the waxing power of the new China. Three of its nations border China and five are directly impacted by its claims over the South China Sea. All dwell in the lengthening shadow of its influence: economic, political, military, and cultural. As China seeks to restore its former status as Asia’s preeminent power, the countries of Southeast Asia face an increasingly stark choice: flourish within Beijing’s orbit or languish outside of it. Meanwhile, as rival powers including the United States take concerted action to curb Chinese ambitions, the region has emerged as an arena of heated strategic competition. Drawing on more than a decade of on-the-ground experience, Sebastian Strangio explores the impacts of China’s rise on Southeast Asia, the varied ways in which the countries of the region are responding, and what it might mean for the future balance of power in the Indo-Pacific.

Book R ma legends and R ma reliefs in Indonesia

Download or read book R ma legends and R ma reliefs in Indonesia written by Willem Frederik Stutterheim and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 1989 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Work First Published In 1925 In The Series Der Indische Kulturkreis In Einzeldarstellungen Has Been Considered A Classic, But Has Not Been Alas Easily Accessible To The English Reading Public. Also For Long, The Work Has Been Out Of Print. With The Publication Of The English Translation Many New Vistas Of Exploration Will Immediately Open Up. It Is Remarkable That Despite The Paucity Of Published Material, The Comparative Absence Of Structural Linguistic Models For The Study Of Languages And Theoretical Paradigms, The Late Professor Stutterheim Employs The Tools Of Structural Linguistic Analysis, Comparative Literature, And Historical Reconstruction. This Is A Far More Challenging Task Than Descriptive Archaeology And Stylistic Analysis. Fundamental To This Is His Ability To Correlate And Revaluate The Relationship Between The Written Texts And Oral Transmission. While All This Is Very Familiar To Contemporary Scholarship, A Reading Of This Monograph Convinces One That Professor Stutterheim Anticipated Modern Scholarship By Many Decades. His Concern Was Not Restricted To The Archaeological Features Of This Group Of Temples But Went Much Further Into Interpretation And Identification Of The Historical Processes Of Acculturization, Diffusion And Autochthonous Tendencies. Along With The Late Professor D.C. Sen, He May Be Considered The First Scholar To Draw Attention To The Role Of The Oral Enunciation Of The Rama Legends In Different Parts Of Asia. In This Monograph He Forcefully Argues That Valmiki S Ramayana Was Not The Basis Of The Indonesian Versions And Disagrees With The Hypothesis That Kamban Provided A Model Or Even That Hanuman-Nataka Was The Original Source. He Comes To The Interesting Conclusion That Perhaps Gujarat Was The Source. Much Has Been Written On The Subject During The Past Few Decades, However, Professor Stutterheim S Argument Remains Fresh. Perhaps Scholars Will Want To Re-Explore The Sources Of The Gujarati Version Of The Ramayana As Also The Panji Stories Of Java. The Monograph Will Also Stimulate Discussion Of A Most Contemporary Concern, I.E., The Relationship Of The Text And The Image: The Adherence, The Interpretations And The Deviations. Of Late, Many Art Historians Have Been Concerned In Their Respective Ways To Analyse The Interface Of Text And Image. The Monograph Is Of Immediate Contemporary Relevance As Theoretical Model For Modern Scholarship.
