Book Ralph the Tallest Elf

Download or read book Ralph the Tallest Elf written by Karl Boyd and published by Bluewaterpress LLC. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph, the Tallest Elf began in a very strange way. One Christmas season I purchased a t-shirt that said, I have had it with elves up to here!" There was a line about the height of my belt. At the time, I thought it was funny, and the words to an old Christmas song kept playing in my mind, "Have yourself a merry little Christmas ... " And so, much like Ralph in the poem, I changed a few words to those you will hear him sing. But then, it struck me - it wasn't funny to a short person, and how would I feel if it were me? My mother loved to write poetry, and I guess some rubbed off, because over the next few days, I wrote "Ralph, the Tallest Elf' to redeem myself in my own eyes. To my surprise, with invaluable assistance from a good friend and editor, Joyce Gilmour, the poem took on a life of its own. I sent a copy as a Christmas gift to all those on my email list and received many replies stating how much they enjoyed the poem by sharing it with their children or grandchildren. With a little good luck, I was put in touch with Erica Missey in San Antonio, and she agreed to do the artwork you see enclosed within these covers. Fantastic! With bullying being so prevalent in our schools today, I believe the message Ralph brings is told in two of my favorite lines: "You can be big, no matter your size." And "What really matters is Christmas in your heart." I hope your young ones will remember these words and the moral of "Ralph, the Tallest Elf' all through the year. Now, open the cover and enjoy! -- Karl Boyd "Here Karl Boyd goes again, in his own sweet whimsical way to remind us of a lesson worth repeating. A beautiful story of how all people should be treated, with a carefully woven message that appeals to all ages. Thanks Karl for yet another treasure!" -- Mary Grammer, Redlands, CA

Excerpt from "The Intentional Father" In the initial visit with my son, I witnessed a child who was bright, smiled, yelled, stomped his feet and screamed. It was not that he could not talk, he would not talk. He had his own language, created in his mind to get his needs satisfied as a result of them not being met prior. I was told that he could only say 7 words, all in Spanish. I went to a corner on this initial visit and sat there with a book and a stuffed bear and waited. Ever so slowly, he approached me, would touch me and run away and giggle. Eventually, he sat in my lap and looked at me for a while, with his social worker, the foster mother and my adoption worker looking on he put his hand on my face and said "daddy". This was not one of the words that he knew and it was not in Spanish......so it began.

Book excerpt: The 1990s was a time for drowning in the genre of grunge music and perfecting the art of slackerdom. At least that’s what it was like for Hunter, growing up in small-town America, the son of a successful doctor. Unlike his dad, serial slacker Hunter never worked hard at anything in his life. But he was a bowler. (Yes, bowling is a sport.) When looking down the polished-wood lane at those spindly white pins, Hunter was someone. A champion. One who accidentally ended up earning a full scholarship to a top-tier Canadian university, thanks to his prowess at smashing pins. But when one door opens—for Hunter anyway—it seems to slam shut just as quickly. Usually smack in his face. That’s exactly what happens when Hunter screws up and his university scholarship goes up in smoke. But when one door closes . . . Hunter finds himself confronted by two more doors, where opportunity awaits. Those double-glass doors at Retail Depot in Winnipeg, Manitoba, usher Hunter into the world of service, rewarded by the princely sum of $8.25 an hour. Sure, he expects a job, but through his time toiling for meager pay in the big-box store, alongside friends and idiots alike, Hunter unexpectedly ends up learning more about himself and the ups and downs of life than he would have ever learned at university. Retail: Redemption at $8.25 an Hour is a coming-of-age story, a journey, not necessarily to greatness or where diehard dreams are fulfilled, but to a place some might call contentment.
