This volume brings together a selection of contributions from some of the leading scholars as well as emerging researchers in the field originally presented at the 13th ICEMLNI (University of Warsaw, 18-22 July 2018). Considering innovative methodologies and tools, the volume presents the current state of research on early modern sources and offers new inputs into our understanding of this period in the cultural history of India. This collection of essays is in the tradition of 'Bhakti in current research' volumes produced from 1980 onward but reflecting our current understanding of early modern textualities. The book operates on the premises that the centuries preceding the colonial conquest of India, which in scholarship influenced by orientalist concepts, has often been referred to as medieval. However these languages already participated in modernity through increased circulation of ideas, new forms of knowledge, new concepts of the individual, of the community, and of religion. The essays cover multiple languages (Indian vernaculars, Sanskrit, Apabhramsha, Persian), different media (texts, performances, paintings, music) and traditions (Hindu, Jain, Muslim, Sant, Sikh), analyzing them as individual phenomena that function in a wider network of connections at textual, intertextual, and knowledge-system levels.

Fascinated, he settles nearby and, exploring, finds that the main painted towns lie in the defunct administrative district of Shekhawati. Research reveals the unpublished writings and drawings of Col Lockett and Lt Boileau, who crossed Shekhawati in 1831. Both men are depicted in contemporary murals. Their mission was to enquire into, and record the brigandry then affecting local trade. This led to the founding of a Shekhawati Brigade to suppress robbery and bring security to the local merchants. Peace and prosperity returned, creating ideal conditions for a display of conspicuous wealth. The merchants commissioned fine buildings and, as a final touch, their walls were painted. So a military mission led to an artistic one!

The magnificence of the Mughal palaces and tombs, the pomp of the court, the lavish ceremonies and feasts, the fame of the court poets, intellectuals, painters and musicians, the sumptuousness of the courtiers' attire--all these came together to create an aristocratic culture of extraordinary wealth and grandeur. Books--and above all books lavishly decorated with exquisite miniatures--had a role and a status in Mughal culture which is almost unimaginable today. They were among the most valuable and certainly the most prized objects in the imperial treasury and were used systematically and effectively to propagate the political goals of the ruler. Art Experts, Mainly Foreign Savants, Have Written Knowledgeable Accounts About Various Aspects Of Rajasthani Painting, But Nobody, It Is Worth Recording, Has Undertaken To Produce A Comprehensive Study In Depth Of This Vast Cultural Field. This Is Absolutely Essential As No Study Of Indian Civilization Is Complete Without It. The Present Study Does Not Claim To Fulfil This Requirement. That Would Need Much More Intensive, Detailed And Patient Research. But It Provides A Good Point Of Takeoff For Such A Study. In Splendour Of Rajasthani Painting, Assembled Obviously With Great Care And Deep Love Of The Subject, Dr. Jai Singh Neeraj Has Laid The Ground Work For Such A Project. He Has Succeeded In Conveying To The Art-Loving Reader The Fact That Rajasthani Art Is A Many-Splendoured Thing That Deserves Much More Attention Than It Has Received So Far.
