Book Raising Career Aspirations of Hispanic Girls

Download or read book Raising Career Aspirations of Hispanic Girls written by Josefina Villamil Tinajero and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pamphlet examines the conditions that put female Hispanic Americans at risk of not completing their education and not aspiring to careers, and describes a program that takes advantage of the important role played by the mother in Hispanic culture. The following factors make female Hispanic Americans the most at-risk of all students: (1) low grades and disciplinary problems; (2) lack of role models; (3) disproportionate levels of referrals to special education classes; (4) low teacher expectations; (5) lack of adequate vocational and career counseling; (6) stereotypical portrayals in the curriculum; (7) weak educational support at home; and (8) mothers with low educational attainment and low educational expectations for their daughters. The Mother-Daughter Program is a collaborative program involving the University of Texas, the YWCA, and three El Paso (Texas) school districts. The program targets Hispanic American female students in grade 6 and their mothers from low-income families in which no member has graduated from college. Mothers are a central focus of the program, because their expectations, involvement, and role-modeling have a lasting impact on their daughters' educational development. Participants engage in a variety of activities on local college campuses and in community service programs. Hispanic American college women who serve as role models are a vital component of the program. Mothers and daughters participating in the program report increased career awareness, self-confidence, and educational aspirations. A list of 20 references is appended. (FMW)

Download or read book Latina Girls written by Jill Denner and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latinas are now the largest minority group of girls in the country. Yet the research about this group is sparse, and there is a lack of information to guide studies, services or education for the rapidly growing Latino population across the U.S. The existing research has focused on stereotypical perceptions of Latinas as frequently dropping out of school, becoming teen mothers, or being involved with boyfriends in gangs. Latina Girls brings together cutting edge research that challenges these stereotypes. At the same time, the volume offers solid data and suggestions for practical intervention for those who study and work to support this population. It highlights the challenges these young women face, as well as the ways in which they successfully negotiate those challenges. The volume includes research on Latinas and their relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners; academics; career goals; identity; lifelong satisfaction; and the ways in which they navigate across cultures and gender roles. Latina Girls is the first book to pull together research on the overall strengths and strategies that characterize Latina adolescents' lives in the U.S. It will be of key interest and practical use to those who study and work with Latina youth.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR When Peggy Orenstein's now-classic examination of young girls and self-esteem was first published, it set off a groundswell that continues to this day. Inspired by an American Association of University Women survey that showed a steep decline in confidence as girls reach adolescence, Orenstein set out to explore the obstacles girls face--in school, in the hoime, and in our culture. For this intimate, girls' eye view of the world, Orenstein spent months observing and interviewing eighth-graders from two ethnically disparate communities, seeking to discover what was causing girls to fall into traditional patterns of self-censorship and self-doubt. By taking us into the lives of real young women who are struggling with eating disorders, sexual harrassment, and declining academic achievement, Orenstein brings the disturbing statistics to life with the skill and flair of an experienced journalist. Uncovering the adolescent roots of issues that remain important to American women throughout their lives, this groundbreaking book challenges us to change the way we raise and educate girls.

Book Hispanic Women in Leadership

Download or read book Hispanic Women in Leadership written by Natalia Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of Hispanic women in leadership positions as they traveled the roads to successful careers. The study also attempted to discover how Hispanic female leaders were able to achieve professional success in the United States: what barriers they encountered and what strategies they used to overcome the obstacles. This study utilized a hermeneutic phenomenological framework to obtain, analyze, and interpret rich descriptive data in order to answer the research questions. Standardized, semi-structured, digitally recorded interviews with twelve Hispanic females employed in leadership positions in academia, government, and the private sector provided rich descriptive data for this study. Seven essential themes emerged because of the coding and data analysis. These seven essential themes represented common characteristics of the participants of this study, and explained their professional success: (a) family, (b) winner mentality, (c) desire to give back to community, (d) religious beliefs, spirituality, and luck, (e) opportunities, (f) keeping Hispanic roots, and (g) mentoring. The results of the study revealed that family support, hard work, self-respect, self-determination, and goal-orientation helped the participants to accomplish their career aspirations. Also revealed was a drive for success and lack of a pre-conceived sense of inequality contributed to the professional success of the participants. The findings imply that it is necessary to create information centers for professional Hispanic females who move to this country. Conclusions suggest that it is very important to create additional centers for English language training and establish mentoring programs for aspiring Hispanic females.

Book Predictors of Non traditional Career Self efficacy in Mexican American Adolescent Women

Download or read book Predictors of Non traditional Career Self efficacy in Mexican American Adolescent Women written by Veronica Michelle Leal and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Projected increases of Hispanics in the U.S. and their contribution to the labor force have created concerns for the future of the U.S. labor market due to their low educational attainment rates. While the proportion of women in the workforce is projected to increase, Mexican American women specifically are underrepresented at all levels of education and overrepresented in low-paying occupations. Due to the notion that the quality of the U.S. labor market will depend on this group's education and job skills, the career development of Hispanics has become a salient issue in research literature. This study sought to expand a theoretical model of career and achievement motivation by testing its generalizability to Mexican American women. The principal purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of mastery motivation and career aspirations as predictors of nontraditional career self-efficacy in Mexican American adolescent women, and the moderating effect of ethnic identity on these relationships. Participants in this study consisted of 121 adolescent high school females from two public high schools in south Texas. Participants responded to each of the instruments: Occupational Self-Efficacy Scale, Career Aspiration Scale, Work and Family Orientation Questionnaire, and Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure, followed by a demographic questionnaire. The data indicated that while there was a significant relationship between Career Aspirations and non-traditional career self-efficacy (NTCSE), the addition of Ethnic Identity as a moderator did not add to the strength of the relationship. Data indicated a positive, significant relationship between mastery motivation and non-traditional career self-efficacy (NTCSE) as well as evidence of a significant moderation effect of Ethnic Identity between Mastery Motivation and NTCSE. Findings suggest that there are other factors that may be impeding the actualization of these student's aspirations. While their aspirations are high, their belief in themselves to successfully accomplish the education requirements and job duties for non-traditional careers is less than their aspirations. Due to the age of this sample, it is possible that ethnic identity may not be a salient factor influencing their self-efficacy, but instead may be a dominant cultural worldview. Limitations of this study and future research directions are discussed.

Book The Kaleidoscope of Gender

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible, timely, and stimulating introduction to the sociology of gender, The Kaleidoscope of Gender: Prisms, Patterns, and Possibilities, Third Edition, provides a comprehensive analysis of key ideas, theories, and applications in this field as viewed through the metaphor of a kaleidoscope. This collection of creative articles by top scholars explains how the complex, evolving pattern of gender is constructed interpersonally, institutionally, and culturally and challenges students to question how gender shapes their daily lives. Like the prior edition, the Third Edition maintains a focus on contemporary contributions to the field while incorporating classical and theoretical arguments to provide a broad framework. Integrating a cross-cultural focus and intersectional inquiry, this unique text/reader vividly illustrates that gender is a malleable continuum of prisms, patterns, and possibilities.

Book Hypermedia

Download or read book Hypermedia written by Dan H. Wishnietsky and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypermedia is not a single technology; it is an integrated electronic environment that combines text, audio, and video into one large file. Users can explore information about a subject using several technologies at the same time. Although the technical foundation for hypermedia was established in the early 1970s, it was not until the late 1980s and early 1990s that the hardware for supporting hypermedia became readily available. In a hypermedia system, each component of stored information is a node, and the nodes are connected by paths. The paths that a user travels are determined by interest, experience, and need. Hypermedia systems have many classroom applications, and can revolutionize a student's view of learning with the hardware and software currently available. As hypermedia technology develops, the educational environment will advance beyond lectures, notetaking, and other common forms of learning. "Edutainment," the combining of education and entertainment, and virtual reality are extensions of hypermedia that promise to improve the learning environment. A 13-item resource list cites the names and addresses of organizations and journals that provide information about hypermedia. (SLD)

Book Interprofessional Practice with Diverse Populations

Download or read book Interprofessional Practice with Diverse Populations written by Allan Barsky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-08-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concepts such as cultural competence, multicultural practice, and ethnosensitivity have taken root in the literature. At the same time, concepts such as cross-disciplinary, transdisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and interprofessional practice have been articulated. Although these two trends coexist in print, the literature in the various helping professions does not address whether and how the issues of client diversity and interprofessional practice can come together in productive and better informed ways. The present book promises to close this gap and offer health care professionals theoretically grounded examples of best practices. The range of diversity includes Native American, Taiwanese, Portuguese, African-American, Algerian, Irish, South Asian, and gay clients.

Book Handbook for Achieving Gender Equity Through Education

Download or read book Handbook for Achieving Gender Equity Through Education written by Susan S. Klein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, the Handbook for Achieving Gender Equity Through Education quickly established itself as the essential reference work concerning gender equity in education. This new, expanded edition provides a 20-year retrospective of the field, one that has the great advantage of documenting U.S. national data on the gains and losses in the efforts to advance gender equality through policies such as Title IX, the landmark federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education, equity programs and research. Key features include: Expertise – Like its predecessor, over 200 expert authors and reviewers provide accurate, consensus, research-based information on the nature of gender equity challenges and what is needed to meet them at all levels of education. Content Area Focus – The analysis of gender equity within specific curriculum areas has been expanded from 6 to 10 chapters including mathematics, science, and engineering. Global/Diversity Focus – Global gender equity is addressed in a separate chapter as well as in numerous other chapters. The expanded section on gender equity strategies for diverse populations contains seven chapters on African Americans, Latina/os, Asian and Pacific Island Americans, American Indians, gifted students, students with disabilities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. Action Oriented – All chapters contain practical recommendations for making education activities and outcomes more gender equitable. A final chapter consolidates individual chapter recommendations for educators, policymakers, and researchers to achieve gender equity in and through education. New Material – Expanded from 25 to 31 chapters, this new edition includes: *more emphasis on male gender equity and on sexuality issues; *special within population gender equity challenges (race, ability and disability, etc); *coeducation and single sex education; *increased use of rigorous research strategies such as meta-analysis showing more sex similarities and fewer sex differences and of evaluations of implementation programs; *technology and gender equity is now treated in three chapters; *women’s and gender studies; *communication skills relating to English, bilingual, and foreign language learning; and *history and implementation of Title IX and other federal and state policies. Since there is so much misleading information about gender equity and education, this Handbook will be essential for anyone who wants accurate, research-based information on controversial gender equity issues—journalists, policy makers, teachers, Title IX coordinators, equity trainers, women’s and gender study faculty, students, and parents.
