Book Dark Side of the Rainbow

Download or read book Dark Side of the Rainbow written by Danielle Paige and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good is Wicked and Wicked is Good in the New York Times bestselling Dorothy Must Die series! This digital original novella is the eighth installment in the series’ prequel arc and reveals how the wonderful world of Oz began to crumble when Dorothy Gale returned—including Rainbow Falls, Oz’s paradise hot spot. Polychrome, Princess of the Rainbow, has a pretty cushy job. She spends her days surfing at Indigo Beach, playing with her pet unicorn, and occasionally checking in on the tourists vacationing at Rainbow Falls, where she is—technically speaking—in charge. When Dorothy arrives, Polly is less than thrilled. She’d much rather flirt with mysterious surfer Bright than play tour guide to a spoiled wannabe princess. But Rainbow Falls won’t be paradise by the time Dorothy’s done with it. And Polly may have to leave her life of leisure behind, to become the ruler her land needs. Danielle Paige delivers a dark and compelling reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, perfect for fans of Cinder by Marissa Meyer, Beastly by Alex Flinn, and Wicked by Gregory Maguire, and follows some of literature’s most beloved characters as their lives intertwine to bring about the downfall of Oz.

Download or read book Proceedings of the fourth Asia Pacific Research in Social Sciences and Humanities Arts and Humanities Stream AHS APRISH 2019 written by Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-27 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book.According to Castells, power now rests in networks: “the logic of the network is more powerful than the powers of the network” (quoted in Weber, 2002, p. 104) – it is whether nation states or local communities are deeply affected, especially by inclusion in and exclusion from the global networks that structure a various sectors in society at any level. Thus it is also crucial look closely at exclusion from and inclusion in different kinds of social structures where connectivity and access to networks are essential, being aware that people at the bottom are those who, with nothing to offer the network, are excluded. Castells’ arguments shows us how the new forms of network society offer challenges in a way that despite the disappearance of conventional ties, exploitation, marginalization, exclusion and differentiation remain. In what follows, scholarships are invited to build an academic discussion on characterizing the structure and dynamics of societies in the world of the twenty-first century. Thus, scholar may come to look at the meaning of being in a network society by examining the role of network society within the complexity of socio-cultural, political and economic circumstances in strengthening the role of science in overcoming local, national, regional and global problems. But scientific research is also required to identify a wide variety of solutions to societal problems enhanced by the network society, which no longer relate solely to a particular discipline, but are multi- and trans-disciplinary. In addition, recent research has changed the traditional role of academia, demanding more collaboration in the production of science, not only among universities, but also among researchers, social practitioners and policymakers. Considering these issues, the fourth Asia-Pacific Research in Social Sciences and Humanities (APRiSH) will be hosted by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FISIP UI) in 2019 under the theme The Network Society: Continuity and Change. Scientific inputs from all parts of the world are welcome, academically and practically. Various perspectives, based on mono-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary or trans-disciplinary research are expected to examine the problems and contribute to solutions.

Book From Dementia to Adventure

Download or read book From Dementia to Adventure written by Neil Mapes and published by Neil Mapes. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From dementia to adventure, in the travel literature genre, is an experiential journey in and around Peru. Neil Mapes put his life in London, which included working with people with dementia, on hold to take a career break in Peru. The two-month journey took place during August and September of 2001 and involved the lone circumnavigation of an enchanting country. London and dementia are swapped for Lima and adventure. The struggles with dementia are left behind for new adventures. After the dirt and danger of Lima the journey proceeds down the coast to the tourist highlight of Pisco and the natural beauty of Las Islas Ballestras. Then it is onward into the depths of the Andes to Arequipa, Lake Titicaca, Cuzco and the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The mountains are left behind as the journey flows into the Amazon jungle and weeks are spent getting lost in time and space before traversing the Andes once more to experience the lesser travelled towns and cities of the North coast before returning to Lima. The country and its many offerings are seen at first hand and reflected on with humour and compassion. This work is like a cross between ‘Round Ireland with a fridge’ and ‘The Celestine prophecy.’ It explores the highs and lows of independent travel and how enriching this form of travel is. It is aimed both at the serious traveller, who wants to take a break from their current career life and get a feel of the country they are to visit in a way that a guidebook cannot provide, and the armchair traveller who is in search of escape into a new world. It will appeal to people who like to reflect on the experiences of meeting people and visiting places. The primary theme throughout is one of connecting with the local people and the landscape. There are many Peruvians who are met and influence this journey. Some of these include Armando who dispenses his advice on his beloved country, Monica the barmaid in the fishing town of Pisco, there is the Ayahuasca jungle artist called George, Christian missionaries on the north coast and love with a girl named Elsa on the way back to Lima. The secondary theme is that of spiritual discovery and development. The stresses of modern city life are put on hold to reflect on what is important in life - time for the soul to grow. At each stage of the journey there is time for inner searching and contemplation. The questions asked are the central questions that exist in all our lives, for example: ‘What am I here for?’ ‘What am I doing with my life? It aims to allow people to discover their own spirituality, to assess where their lives are going and how to make the best of the time we each have. For the many readers that may have found themselves wrapped up in a career they no longer care for, or one in which they are becoming weary, this work gives them one example of how to break this downward spiral. If each person that reads this work asks himself or herself the following question then the writing will have achieved its goal. ‘What do I really want to do and to be before I die?’

William Clark Russell writes with authority as a former sailor himself and is able to instill in his readers the fear, stress, and excitement of being at sea in the late 1800s. This book, instead, was written with sailors in mind. A compilation of stories, Russell succeeded in creating an anthology that would cure the boredom of sailors around the globe. While the book was almost lost to time as travel by sea became less commonplace, it is still a part of the author's nautical legacy.

Download or read book The Science of Play written by Susan G. Solomon and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor design and wasted funding characterize today's American playgrounds. A range of factors--including a litigious culture, overzealous safety guidelines, and an ethos of risk aversion--have created uniform and unimaginative playgrounds. These spaces fail to nurture the development of children or promote playgrounds as an active component in enlivening community space. Solomon's book demonstrates how to alter the status quo by allying data with design. Recent information from the behavioral sciences indicates that kids need to take risks; experience failure but also have a chance to succeed and master difficult tasks; learn to plan and solve problems; exercise self-control; and develop friendships. Solomon illustrates how architects and landscape architects (most of whom work in Europe and Japan) have already addressed these needs with strong, successful playground designs. These innovative spaces, many of which are more multifunctional and cost effective than traditional playgrounds, are both sustainable and welcoming. Having become vibrant hubs within their neighborhoods, these play sites are models for anyone designing or commissioning an urban area for children and their families. The Science of Play, a clarion call to use playground design to deepen the American commitment to public space, will interest architects, landscape architects, urban policy makers, city managers, local politicians, and parents.
