Book excerpt: The Souris Basin Development Authority is requesting, through thisEnvironmental Impact Statement, a license from the Saskatchewan Department ofEnvironment to construct the Rafferty Dam, the Alameda Dam and relatedappurtenances on the Souris River system in southeastern Saskatchewan. Thispublication is Chapter 13 of the Environmental Impact Statement, presentinginformation on the extent and probability of irrigation development. Evaluation of land suitablility for irrigation was undertaken for threeareas: townships surrounding the Rafferty Reservoir; townships surroundingthe Alameda Reservoir; and the Souris River Valley bottom lands between theRafferty dam and the United States border. Computer modeling by the Saskatchewan Water Corporation provided estimates of the amount of wateravailable for irrigation. Details are given on potential and current irrigation development, water availability and development, groundwater, soils studies, land classification, engineering design and costs, annualwater requirements, economic evaluation of irrigation and recent irrigationprojections.
