Book Radio s Conquest of Space Classic Reprint

Download or read book Radio s Conquest of Space Classic Reprint written by Donald Monroe McNicol and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radio's Conquest of Space In this work the author makes no attempt to romanticize the history of radio. Rather, radio is treated as a great new utility created by men of genius who hearkened less to outside inspiration than to voices within themselves: men (and boys) of pioneering spirit who through enthusiasm and diligence studied and experimented, often with meager equipment, until desired results were attained. The work supplies a readable record of radio achievement having somewhat chronological treatment, which will enable radio workers to live over again days and nights of attachment to a labor that held their interest constant. The book, without mathematics, presents a narrative of experimental achievement which boys and young men will find stimulating, while at the same time they acquire a knowledge of how radio started and how it grew. The layman, also, by perusing this work may learn how radio operates, since the knowledge of its construction and working today is built up from its elementary beginning. And, because of the manner in which the various scientists, engineers, and experimenters are identified, the reader may recognize the many consecutive contributions as achievements of real people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Lasser stands as one of the least-known but extraordinary pioneers of spaceflight. In 1930 he founded the American Interplanetary Society (AIAA) -- the same year he wrote this book -- the first book ever written in the English language to address the notion of spaceflight as a serious possibility. The book has not been in print since 1931 and yet it still stands up to scrutiny. The lucid style with which Lasser explains the basic concepts of rocketry make it a delight for anyone to read.

Book From Radio to Television

Download or read book From Radio to Television written by Vincent Terrace and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early years of television relied in part on successful narratives of another medium, as studios adapted radio programs like Boston Blackie and Defense Attorney to the small screen. Many shows were adapted more than once, like the radio program Blondie, which inspired six television adaptations and 28 theatrical films. These are but a few of the 1,164 programs covered in this volume. Each program entry contains a detailed story line, years of broadcast, performer and character casts and principal production credits where possible. Two appendices ("Almost a Transition" and "Television to Radio") and a performer's index conclude the book. This first-of-its-kind encyclopedia covers many little-known programs that have rarely been discussed in print (e.g., Real George, based on Me and Janie; Volume One, based on Quiet, Please; and Galaxy, based on X Minus One). Covered programs include The Great Gildersleeve, Howdy Doody, My Friend Irma, My Little Margie, Space Patrol and Vic and Sade.

Book Geophysics Realism and Industry

Download or read book Geophysics Realism and Industry written by Aitor Anduaga and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did industry and commerce affect the concepts, values and epistemic foundations of different sciences? If so, how and to what extent? This book suggests that the most significant influence of industry on science in the two case studies treated here had to do with the issue of realism. Using wave propagation as the common thread, this is the first book to simultaneously analyse the emergence of realist attitudes towards the entities of the ionosphere and of the earth's crust. However, what led physicists and engineers to adopt realist attitudes? This book suggests that a new kind of realism —a realism of social and cultural origins- is the answer: a preliminary, entity realism responding to specific commercial and engineering interests, and a realism that was neither strictly instrumental nor exclusively operational. The book has two parts: while Part I focuses on the study of the ionosphere and how the British radio industry affected ionospheric physics, Part II focuses on the study of the Earth's crust and how the American oil industry affected crustal seismology.
