Book The Rotaformidae a New Family of Upper Cretaceous Nassellariina Radiolaria from the Great Valley Sequence California Coast Ranges

Download or read book The Rotaformidae a New Family of Upper Cretaceous Nassellariina Radiolaria from the Great Valley Sequence California Coast Ranges written by Emile A. Pessagno (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rotaformidae Pessagno, n. fam., are a bizarre group of dicyrtid Nassellariina with cartwheel-shaped tests and nine cephalic skeletal elements identical to those of the Neosciadiocapsidae Pessagno. It is postulated that the Neosciadiocapsidae gave rise to the Rotaformidae through (1) the rotation of the cephalis and upper thorax into the plane of the thoracic skirt and (2) the loss of the thoracic skirt and the subsequent development of a thoracic ring. Two new genera and seven new species of Rotaformidae are described from the Upper Cretaceous portion of the Great Valley Sequence, California Coast Ranges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiolaria are a very diverse marine siliceous microplankton group that have existed at least snice the Cambrian to the recent. This volume gives a representative view of research topics discussed at the 10th International Meeting of Radiolarian Palaeontologists. The articles of this volume cover mainly radiolarian biochronology and radiolarian fauna changes.

Book Paleobiology of the Polycystine Radiolaria

Download or read book Paleobiology of the Polycystine Radiolaria written by David Lazarus and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycystine radiolaria are exclusively marine protists and are found in all ocean waters, from polar regions to the tropics, and at all water depths. There are approximately 600 distinct described living species and several thousand fossil species of polycystines. Radiolarians in general, and polycystines in particular, have recently been shown to be a major component of the living plankton and important to the oceanic carbon cycle. As fossils radiolarians are also fairly common, and often occur in sediments where other types of fossils are absent. This has made them very valuable for certain types of geologic research, particularly estimating the geologic age of the sediments containing them, and as guides to past oceanic water conditions. As our current understanding of the biology, and even taxonomy of the living fauna is still very incomplete, evolutionary studies based on living polycystines are still rare. However, the common occurrence of numerous specimens for many species, and in a wide variety of oceanic environments, provides an excellent opportunity to study the processes of biologic evolution in the fossil record. Paleobiology of the Polycystine Radiolaria is the first major book on radiolarians to appear in the western literature since 2001. Focusing on living and fossil siliceous shelled radiolarians, it is notable for its emphasis not upon morphologic or taxonomic detail but on concepts and applications. The book attempts to provide a balanced, critical review of what is known of the biology, ecology, and fossil record of the group, as well as their use in evolutionary, biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic research. Full chapters on the history of study, and molecular biology, are the first ever in book form. Written for an audience of advanced undergraduate to doctoral students, as well as for a broad range of professionals in the biological and Earth sciences, Paleobiology of the Polycystine Radiolaria summarizes current understanding of the marine planktonic protist group polycystine radiolaria, both in living and fossil form.

Book Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous Radiolaria Biostratigraphy of California Coast Ranges

Download or read book Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous Radiolaria Biostratigraphy of California Coast Ranges written by Seyed Mohsen Kariminia and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiolarian faunas from the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous strata of the Great Valley Supergroup, Northern California Coast Ranges were studied. The Great Valley Supergroup was sampled at Grindstone Creek, Glenn County, California; for the Tithonian to lower Valanginian interval, and at McCarty Creek, Tehama County, California for the upper Tithonian to lower Albian interval. These two localities were chosen because of their biostratigraphic and geochronometric data. Ninety six species, including eighteen new species and one new genus, were identified from the micrite nodules. The radiolarian fauna is very diversified, but not abundant. Nassellarians dominate the fauna. Samples collected from the Grindstone Creek section of the Great Valley Supergroup contain Upper Jurassic (upper Tithonian) to Lower Cretaceous (upper Hauterivian) Radiolaria (Zone 4, Subzone 4 alpha to Zone 5, Subzone 5c). Micrite nodules from the McCarty Creek section yielded upper Tithonian to lower Albian radiolarian. U/Pb geochronometric data from Grindstone Creek section of the Great Valley Supergroup indicate an age of Berriasian. This study also describes a method of extracting well-preserved calcified radiolaria from micrite utilizing acetic acid.
