Book Nuclear Chemistry Project Progress Report Janary 1 1979 December 31 1979

Download or read book Nuclear Chemistry Project Progress Report Janary 1 1979 December 31 1979 written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first on-line operation of the Princeton electron spectrometer was achieved and its capability for fast life time measurements demonstrated. The first operation of the heavy ion source was achieved and beams of 75 meV 12C/sup +4/ ions and 37 MeV 6Li/sup +2/ ions demonstrated. The capability of the isotope separator to provide pure mass separated samples of radioisotopes is being utilized for three different applications. The very weak electron capture branch of 19-s krypton 81m to bromine 81 was studied. This transition probability is of crucial importance for a possible solar neutrino detection method based on natural bromine. Lead 202 has been prepared and mass separated for optical hyperfine spectroscopic studies. The isotope shift shift which measures the second moment, r2, of the nuclear charge indicates the more neutron deficient lead isotopes are becoming increasingly soft toward nuclear deformation.

Book Annual Progress Report on Nuclear Chemistry Research February 1 1979 January 31 1980 Univ of Chicago 11 1 77 1 1 79

This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prinicpal effort during this contract period was directed toward preparing for on-line radiochemical experiments at LAMPF directed toward studying rare processes such as (.pi.−, .pi.), (n, .delta./sup + +/) and (.mu.−, e+) in 88Sr. Chemical scavenging techniques to remove interfering products were shown to be effective without significantly affecting the sensitivity of the detection system. Sensitivities of less than 0.1 .mu.b for the first two processes appear achievable. Detailed statistical analysis of last years' experiments is leading to new limits, about an order of magnitude lower than already reported, on the formation of polyneutrons, reinforcing the conclusion that such species are not particle stable. 100−GeV .pi.− studies of copper spallation are revealing no dramatic differences between spallation with pions and that with protons. Essentially, this report consists of a collection of abstract-like summaries.

Book Nuclear Chemistry Progress Report September 1 1978 August 31 1979 Oregon State Univ September 1 1978 September 1 1979

Download or read book Nuclear Chemistry Progress Report September 1 1978 August 31 1979 Oregon State Univ September 1 1978 September 1 1979 written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work done between September 1, 1978, and September 1, 1979, involved the study of low-energy and relativistic heavy-ion reactions. In the former area most of the effort went into a careful re-examination of the failure to synthesize superheavy elements in complete fusion reactions. It was concluded that fission barriers are of the order of 5 or 6 MeV corresponding to a half-life of 105 years, a value precluding their occurrence in nature. In the area of relativistic heavy-ion (RHI) reaction studies, the most interesting results came in studies of the energy dependence of the product mass and charge distributions resulting from the interaction of RHIs with U and studies of the recoil properties of the target residues produced in the reaction of RHIs with heavy targets. Lists of personnel, publications, and oral presentations are included, along with a collection of reprints and preprints. Eight of the individual articles in this report are indexed separately.

Book Radiological Safety Aspects of the Operation of Proton Accelerators

Download or read book Radiological Safety Aspects of the Operation of Proton Accelerators written by Ralph H. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report serves as a guide for the planning and implementation of radiation protection programmes for all types of positive ion accelerators. The basic types of accelerators are briefly described, followed by a detailed description of several installations covering the energy range from 10 MeV to 500 GeV. Special emphasis is given to the production of ionizing radiation and its transmission through shielding, computer techniques for shield design, radiation measurement and interpretation, and the radiological impact of accelerators on the environment. Extensive references are given so the book can serve as a source to the published literature.

Book Tank Waste Retrieval Processing and On site Disposal at Three Department of Energy Sites

Download or read book Tank Waste Retrieval Processing and On site Disposal at Three Department of Energy Sites written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-09-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DOE Tank Waste: How clean is clean enough? The U.S. Congress asked the National Academies to evaluate the Department of Energy's (DOE's) plans for cleaning up defense-related radioactive wastes stored in underground tanks at three sites: the Hanford Site in Washington State, the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, and the Idaho National Laboratory. DOE plans to remove the waste from the tanks, separate out high-level radioactive waste to be shipped to an off-site geological repository, and dispose of the remaining lower-activity waste onsite. The report concludes that DOE's overall plan is workable, but some important challenges must be overcomeâ€"including the removal of residual waste from some tanks, especially at Hanford and Savannah River. The report recommends that DOE pursue a more risk-informed, consistent, participatory, and transparent for making decisions about how much waste to retrieve from tanks and how much to dispose of onsite. The report offers several other detailed recommendations to improve the technical soundness of DOE's tank cleanup plans.
