Download or read book Broadcasting the Local News written by Lynn Boyd Hinds and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television came to Pittsburgh in 1949 when WDTV (the forerunner of KDKA-TV) went on the air. Whereas many television stations in the United States began reading news on the air only to comply with FCC requirements, WDTV treated news seriously from day one with its first regular program, a local news show called "Pitt Parade." Today KDKA is still highly regarded among journalists for its news programming. Although television news may seem familiar to us, it was anything but familiar to the men and women of early television. Hinds shows how they borrowed liberally from newspapers, radio, motion picture newsreels, theater, and even magazines to create, by trial and error, suitable ways to present the news. Rather than instantly replacing radio, television news moved slowly from the "rip and read" radio-style format, which simply duplicated what came over the wire services and was in the newspapers, to the conventions of local newscasts we take for granted today--live remotes, lead and feature stories, sports and weather, all brought together by an in-studio anchor. Pittsburghers will recognize many familiar names in Hinds's account--Bill Burns, Paul Long, Florence Sando, Eleanor Schano, and others--veterans of Pittsburgh broadcasting whom Hinds has interviewed for this book. The story they tell is the story of dozens of other stations across the country. In the process, they tell us much about the early history of television in America. Lynn Boyd Hinds spent over twenty years in Pittsburgh television and radio before moving to Penn State University where he was an affiliate producer for WPSX-TV, the public broadcasting station in Central Pennsylvania. There he created and hosted the popular quiz show, "The Pennsylvania Game." Today he is Associate Professor of Broadcast News in the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University.
Download or read book The 1937 Chicago Steel Strike written by John F. Hogan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in-depth history of the Memorial Day Massacre brings new clarity to the conflicting reports that left too many questions unanswered. A violent period of American labor history reached its bloody apex in 1937 when rattled Chicago police shot, clubbed, and gassed a group of men, women, and children attempting to picket Republic Steel’s South Chicago plant. Ten died and over one hundred were wounded in what became known as the Memorial Day Massacre. A newsreel camera captured about eight minutes of the confrontation, yet local and congressional investigations amazingly reached opposite conclusions about what happened and why. Now Chicago historian John Hogan sifts through the conflicting reports of all those entangled in that fateful day, including union leaders, news reporters, and an undercover National Guard observer revealed after seventy-six years.

Download or read book Hot Coal Cold Steel written by Stephen Crowley and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well after the disintegration of the Communist Party and the Soviet state--and through several years of economic collapse--industrial workers in almost every sector of the former Soviet Union have remained quiescent and the same ineffective and unpopular trade unions still hold a virtual monopoly on worker's representation. Why? While many argue that labor is a central variable in the development of economic and political systems, little is known about workers in the states of the former Soviet Union since the fall of Communism. In a comparative study of two groups of industrial workers--the coal miners and steelworkers--at the end of the Soviet era, Stephen Crowley sheds light on where these workers have been and where they are going. Coal miners in the final years of the Soviet Union effectively organized and led strikes which supported the end of Communism, even though their heavy subsidies would be threatened by capitalism. Steel workers, in contrast, did not effectively organize and strike. This pattern has continued under the new governments, with the coal miners effectively organized and seeking protection from the worst consequences of marketization, while the steel workers remain weakly organized despite deteriorating economic conditions. Based on extensive on-site research including interviews with miners and steelworkers, labor leaders and plant managers, Crowley develops a detailed picture of the conditions under which workers organize. His findings have application beyond the conditions of post-Communist Russia and Ukraine to other societies undergoing fundamental change. This book will be of interest to sociologists and political scientists interested in the role of labor in transitional societies, the patterns of organization of labor, as well as area specialists. Stephen Crowley is Associate Professor of Political Science, Oberlin College.

Unlike opinionated "Top 100" and arbitrary "Best of" lists, these are the real thing: groundbreaking films that make up the backbone of American cinema. Some are well-known, such as Citizen Kane, The Jazz Singer, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Birth of a Nation, and Boyz n the Hood. Others are more obscure, such as Blacksmith Scene, The Blue Bird, The Docks of New York, Star Theatre, and A Bronx Morning. Download or read book Naked at the Mic written by L.A. Steel and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naked at the Mic / The Survival of a Liberal in a Time of Peril Is a work of exhaustive research and remembrance as a historic account of the politics and social upheaval during the Conservative Revolution, that took place during the first decade of the 21st Century, as I witnessed and reported it on my television and radio programs during the years of 2000 to 2009. This book is also a personal account and compliment to the many people who fought so valiantly to broadcast truth and liberal commentary, while the entire broadcast media was dominated and censored by the Conservative right wing, the G.W Bush administration and the cabal of Muslim hating warmongers, famously known as the NeoCons. Naked at the Mic also commemorates the many people who stood up against the G.W Bush administration, and their nightmare of genocide and slaughter in the Middle East, and the cruel, corrupt and oppressive government they imposed on the American people during their reign of terror and torture from 2000 to 2008. I also speak honestly about the 2008 presidential candidates and the election of Barack Obama, and why I voted for him, and my great disappointment, after his horrific betrayal of all who elected him. The research for Naked at the Mic entailed over 5000 news articles that I have personally archived and preserved on paper, to verify every quote and reference I make, and over 100 books and interviews of authors, activists and politicians on 400 archived radio shows and ten televised documentaries I had produced up to 2009, when I completed writing this book. It is an honest look back through time at people and events, that have been at the forefront of national and world changing events. Naked at the Mic is a historical record of one of the most volatile decades in American and world history. It discusses many of the most important national and international issues from 2000 2009, the corrupt 2000 presidential election, 911, the Afghanistan and Iraq invasions, Katrina, and exposes the massive corporate, financial and political corruption and mass media coverups up to the end of 2009. I honestly discuss and expose left and right wing politics, and give a unique front line perspective of the massive sea change of American Society, that caused G.W Bush's 75 percent approval rating in 2001, to his final approval rating of 24% in 2008. Naked at the Mic is honest, fast moving, highly informative and well researched, and is an accurate, historical account of one of the most politically conservative, and most destructive periods in American history, that has led to the current economic, military and moral demise of America. Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated in his famous essay The Oversoul Oh, Believe that every word that was meant for thine ear to hear will come to thee . I believe a lot of people are meant to hear what this book has to say. L.A.Steel
Download or read book Radio s Second Century written by John Allen Hendricks and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2022 Broadcast Education Association Book Award One of the first books to examine the status of broadcasting on its one hundredth anniversary, Radio’s Second Century investigates both vanguard and perennial topics relevant to radio’s past, present, and future. As the radio industry enters its second century of existence, it continues to be a dominant mass medium with almost total listenership saturation despite rapid technological advancements that provide alternatives for consumers. Lasting influences such as on-air personalities, audience behavior, fan relationships, and localism are analyzed as well as contemporary issues including social and digital media. Other essays examine the regulatory concerns that continue to exist for public radio, commercial radio, and community radio, and discuss the hindrances and challenges posed by government regulation with an emphasis on both American and international perspectives. Radio’s impact on cultural hegemony through creative programming content in the areas of religion, ethnic inclusivity, and gender parity is also explored. Taken together, this volume compromises a meaningful insight into the broadcast industry’s continuing power to inform and entertain listeners around the world via its oldest mass medium--radio.
