Book Radiation Protection Design Guidelines for 0 1 100 MeV Particle Accelerator Facilities

Download or read book Radiation Protection Design Guidelines for 0 1 100 MeV Particle Accelerator Facilities written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) is concerned with radiations produced by accelerators of charged particles having energies from 9.1 to 100 MeV. The material in this report includes recommendations concerning structural shielding and details of accelerator-facility design as they pertain to radiation protection. The scientific committee responsible for the preparation of this report was charged with preparing a guide to good practice in radiation protection for all types of particle accelerators, taking into full consideration their broad application in research, medicine, and industry. In carrying out this objective, the committee has endeavored to organize into a single report the recommendations and guidelines for the many accelerator designs, performance ratings, and applications, without resorting to over-generalization or undue conservatism. There is some overlap of this report with the coverage of other NCRP reports, but an attempt has been made to limit duplication of material except where it is justified for the sake of continuity, or because of the need to complement the coverage of the following existing NCRP reports, or to update their information and recommendations: NCRP Report Nos. 14 (1954a); 31 (1964b); 34 (1970a), which was superseded by NCRP Report No. 49 (1976); 38 (1971a)." --From the Preface, page iii.

Book Isotopes for Medicine and the Life Sciences

Download or read book Isotopes for Medicine and the Life Sciences written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-27 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioactive isotopes and enriched stable isotopes are used widely in medicine, agriculture, industry, and science, where their application allows us to perform many tasks more accurately, more simply, less expensively, and more quickly than would otherwise be possible. Indeed, in many casesâ€"for example, biological tracersâ€"there is no alternative. In a stellar example of "technology transfer" that began before the term was popular, the Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessors has supported the development and application of isotopes and their transfer to the private sector. The DOE is now at an important crossroads: Isotope production has suffered as support for DOE's laboratories has declined. In response to a DOE request, this book is an intensive examination of isotope production and availability, including the education and training of those who will be needed to sustain the flow of radioactive and stable materials from their sources to the laboratories and medical care facilities in which they are used. Chapters include an examination of enriched stable isotopes; reactor and accelerator-produced radionuclides; partnerships among industries, national laboratories, and universities; and national isotope policy.

Book Status of Accelerator Driven Systems Research and Technology Development

Download or read book Status of Accelerator Driven Systems Research and Technology Development written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Tecdoc. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest challenges for nuclear energy is how to properly manage the highly radioactive waste generated during irradiation in nuclear reactors. Accelerator Driven Systems (ADSs) may offer new prospects and advantages for the transmutation of such high level nuclear waste. ADS or accelerator driven transmutation of waste (ATW) consists of a high power proton accelerator, a heavy metal spallation target that produces neutrons when bombarded by the high power beam, and a sub-critical core that is neutronically coupled to the spallation target. This publication provides a comprehensive state of the art of the ADS technology by representing the different ADS concepts proposed worldwide in the last 15 years, as well as the related R&D activities and demonstration initiatives carried out at national international level.

Book Engineered and Administrative Safety Systems for the Control of Prompt Radiation Hazards at Accelerator Facilities

Download or read book Engineered and Administrative Safety Systems for the Control of Prompt Radiation Hazards at Accelerator Facilities written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ANSI N43.1 Standard, currently in revision (ANSI 2007), sets forth the requirements for accelerator facilities to provide adequate protection for the workers, the public and the environment from the hazards of ionizing radiation produced during and from accelerator operations. The Standard also recommends good practices that, when followed, provide a level of radiation protection consistent with those established for the accelerator communities. The N43.1 Standard is suitable for all accelerator facilities (using electron, positron, proton, or ion particle beams) capable of producing radiation, subject to federal or state regulations. The requirements (see word 'shall') and recommended practices (see word 'should') are prescribed in a graded approach that are commensurate with the complexity and hazard levels of the accelerator facility. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 of the N43.1 Standard address specially the Radiation Safety System (RSS), both engineered and administrative systems, to mitigate and control the prompt radiation hazards from accelerator operations. The RSS includes the Access Control System (ACS) and Radiation Control System (RCS). The main requirements and recommendations of the N43.1 Standard regarding the management, technical and operational aspects of the RSS are described and condensed in this report. Clearly some aspects of the RSS policies and practices at different facilities may differ in order to meet the practical needs for field implementation. A previous report (Liu et al. 2001a), which reviews and summarizes the RSS at five North American high-energy accelerator facilities, as well as the RSS references for the 5 labs (Drozdoff 2001; Gallegos 1996; Ipe and Liu 1992; Liu 1999; Liu 2001b; Rokni 1996; TJNAF 1994; Yotam et al. 1991), can be consulted for the actual RSS implementation at various laboratories. A comprehensive report describing the RSS at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC 2006) can also serve as a reference.
