Book Structural Shielding Design for Medical X ray Imaging Facilities

Download or read book Structural Shielding Design for Medical X ray Imaging Facilities written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and published by NCRP. This book was released on 2004 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report No. 147 (2004) presents recommendations and technical information related to the design and installation of structural shielding for facilities that use x rays for medical imaging. The purpose of structural shielding is to limit radiation exposure to employees and members of the public. The information supersedes the recommendations that address such facilities in NCRP Report No. 49, Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X Rays and Gamma Rays of Energies Up to 10 MeV, which was issued in September 1976. NCRP Report No. 147 includes a discussion of the various factors to be considered in the selection of appropriate shielding materials and in the calculation of barrier thicknesses. The Report presents the fundamentals of radiation shielding, discusses shielding design goals for controlled and uncontrolled areas in or near x-ray imaging facilities and defines the relationship of these goals to the NCRP effective dose limits for radiation workers and members of the public. The Report includes a detailed discussion of the recommended shielding design methodology for x-ray imaging facilities and provides an extensive collection of shielding data and sample shielding calculations for various types of x-ray imaging facilities. The Report is mainly intended for those individuals who specialize in radiation protection. However, it will also be of interest to architects, hospital administrators and related professionals concerned with the planning of new facilities that use x rays for medical imaging.

Book Radiation Shielding

Download or read book Radiation Shielding written by J. Kenneth Shultis and published by Amer Nuclear Society. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly published book is intended for dual use as a textbook for students in radiation shielding courses and a reference work for shielding practitioners. It emphasizes the principles behind techniques used in various aspects of shield analysis and presents these principles in many different contexts. This approach is intended to provide a strong base of understanding in order to facilitate use of the large shielding codes that have come to dominate shielding design and analysis. An assumption is made that the reader has an understanding of mathematics through basic calculus and vector analysis as well as a knowledge of the nuclear physics of radioactive decay. For most chapters, problem sets are provided.

Book Radiation Protection shield Design

Download or read book Radiation Protection shield Design written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation protection/shielding design of a nuclear facility requires a coordinated effort of many engineering disciplines to meet the requirements imposed by regulations. The system approach to Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant (CRBRP) radiation protection is described, and the program developed to implement this approach is defined. In addition, the principal shielding design problems for LMFBR nuclear reactor systems are discussed in relation to LWR nuclear reactor system shielding designs. The methodology used to analyze these problems in the U.S. LMFBR program, the resultant design solutions, and the experimental verification of these designs and/or methods are discussed.

Book Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shielding

Download or read book Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shielding written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need has arisen for a comprehensive handbook for engineers faced with problems of radiation shielding design. Although there are several excellent books on shielding, they either do not give enough consideration to the many practical design problems, or are limited to special aspects of the subject. Recognizing the universal need, the International Atomic Energy Agency decided to sponsor the publication ofthe present Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shield ing. At the first editorial discussions it was agreed that, if such a book were to be undertaken, it would be appropriate not only to create a useful design tool for the practising engineer but also to include well-referenced basic data for the research worker. Although trying to keep the book down to a reasonable size, the editors have aimed at a complete presentation of the subject, covering and linking both the tech nology and the science of shielding. Efforts to make terms and definitions consistent throughout have been only partially successful, owing to the continuing development of new ideas. However, inconsisten cies that could not be eliminated are identified whenever possible.

Book Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X rays and Gamma Rays of Energies Up to 10 MeV

Download or read book Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X rays and Gamma Rays of Energies Up to 10 MeV written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and published by Ncrp. This book was released on 1976 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements...is concerned with structural shielding design and evaluation for medical installations utilizing x rays and gamma rays of energies up to 10 MeV. The report contains recommendations and technical information as well as a discussion of the various factors which must be considered in the selection of appropriate shielding materiels and in the calculation of the barrier thickness. Recent [this publication 1976] availability of new data used to calculate the shielding requirements has resulted in revision of some of the shielding requirement tables set out in Appendix C. Specific values of the parameters used in the formulation of the tables are explicitly given. The calculational procedures are presented in such a manner as to facilitate their use in deriving customized shielding requirements not to be found in the tables. An adjunct to the report presenting full sized reproductions of the curves for barrier requirements is also an innovation for the NCRP." --From the Preface, page iii.

Book Design and Analysis of Radiation Shielding Eyewear

Download or read book Design and Analysis of Radiation Shielding Eyewear written by David A. Spackman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent reductions to the international dose limit recommendations for the lens of the eye have renewed interest in radiation protection strategies in interventional fluoroscopy, where eye-lens radiation exposure occurs frequently. Radiationshielding eyewear can significantly reduce lens dose in these scenarios, but accurate protection factors are elusive because they depend on a variety of factors. This work aims to investigate variables that affect eye shield performance in fluoroscopy rooms, test several shield designs, and rate the shield designs based on shielding performance. Eight separate shields were modeled in MCNP5 using detailed head and eye geometry, and the shields were evaluated at eight individual source positions. Results showed that shields of different thicknesses and shapes can provide similar protection to the operator. A total protection factor of about 5 is the most protection a 0.10 mm lead equivalent material can reasonably provide, and small shields constructed of this material can provide protection factors of about 3. Shield performance can vary greatly depending on the irradiation angle, and this could cause an overestimation of the dose reduction provided by the shield if vulnerable angles are exploited. With increasing evidence of cataract risk at low lens doses, fluoroscopy operators need radiation protection equipment that can provide well characterized protection, and radiation-shielding eyewear can provide excellent dose reduction if they are designed well and used correctly.
