Book excerpt: Measurements of the dose and temperature dependences of radiation-induced segregation in a V-ion irradiated alloy of V-15 Cr are reported. Very rapid migration of Cr atoms toward the external surface occurs during irradiation in the temperature range from approx. 450°C to 700°C. A maximum in the degree of segregation is found near 650°C for a peak dose rate of approx. 3 x 10−3 dpa s−1.

Book excerpt: Irradiation at elevated temperature induces redistribution of the elements in alloys on a microstructural level. This phenomenon is caused by differences in the coupling of the various alloy constituents to the radiation-induced defect fluxes. A simple model of the segregation process based on coupled reaction-rate and diffusion equations is discussed. The model gives a good description of the experimentally observed consequences of radiation-induced segregation, including enrichment or depletion of solute elements near defect sinks such as surfaces, voids and dislocations; precipitation of second phases in solid solutions; precipitate redistribution in two-phase alloys; and effects of defect-production rates on void-swelling rates in alloys with minor solute additions.

Book excerpt: Substitional solute segregation in a fcc metal under irradiation was studied using a kinetic model. The model includes the effects of vacancy and dumbbell-interstitial diffusional encounters with solute atoms, diffusion of point defects and bound complexes, and spatially independent reaction terms. The GEAR package of subroutines was used for numerical solution of the resultant rate equations. Assuming thin-foil geometry and parameters appropriate for Zn in Ag, solute segregation is found to be significant in the temperature range from 0.2 to 0.6 T/sub m/, with maximum segregation occurring at approximately 0.45 T/sub m/. The temperature for maximum segregation is appreciably lower for reactor irradiation rates than for ion-bombardment or high-voltage electron-microscope irradiation rates. Segregation is also found to be maximum when the interstitial-solute binding energy is sufficiently high so that the migration energies of the vacancy and interstitial-solute complex becomes comparable. 6 fig.

Book excerpt: Two microchemical analysis techniques are used to measure solute segregation at grain boundaries in two .gamma.'-strengthened, fcc Fe-Ni-Cr alloys that display radiation-induced intergranular fracture. Scanning Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) of grain boundary fracture surfaces and analytical electron microscopy (AEM) of intact grain boundaries using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy show good agreement on the nature and extent of segregation. The elements Ni, Si, Ti, and Mo are found to accumulate in G, Laves and .gamma.' phases on the grain boundaries. Segregation of P is detected by AES. The complementary features of the two analytical techniques are discussed briefly.
