Book Radiation Curing of Coatings

Download or read book Radiation Curing of Coatings written by Joseph V. Koleske and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RADIATION CHEMISTRY AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO the coating and paint technology industry involves the application of a low viscosity mixture principally comprised of reactive monomers and oligomers but containing, as well, conventional coating additives such as fillers, colorants in the form of dyes or pigments, surfactants, and so on to a substrate and exposing them to a radiation sourceparticularly ultraviolet (UV) or electron beam (EB) radiationfor very short periods of time. When required, as in UV radiation curing, a small amount of photoinitiator is included in the formulation. When exposed to the radiation source, the mixture of materials is almost instantaneously converted into an effectively cross-linked, high quality coating or other product [1]. Radiation technology, as applied to coatings, had its infancy in the late 1960s and early 1970s when governmental regulation began requiring that solvent emissions from paint and coatings be decreased and regulated. At that time, most coatings were formulated with high molecular weight polymers and large amounts (often 80 % or more) of inexpensive solvents and cosolvents that for the most part were emitted to the atmosphere. Regulation increasingly forced companies to decrease these emitted solvents, and it was in this environment that new technologies such as high solids, powder, and radiation-cured coatings were born. Changes were slow to come into being in the stodgy (at that time) paint and coatings business, but today each of these methods of formulation and curing has become an important part of the coating and paint business. RADTECH International is an association for ultraviolet and electron beam technology as related to radiation-cured products for the adhesive, coating, ink, paint, and related industries. This group publishes a report (RadTech Report) five times a year, conducts UV/EB technology expositions and conferences and publishes the conference proceedings, has various publication and information available, and maintains a link between the various facets of the UV/EB industry (see www.radtech.org).

Book Radiation curable Coatings

Download or read book Radiation curable Coatings written by Stephen A. Walata and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report evaluates radiation-curable coatings as a technology for reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from surface coating operations. A survey of the literature was conducted to assess the state of the technology and emissions from radiation-curable processes. The information collected from the literature was used to evaluate the engineering and economic issues associated with radiation- curable systems and to identify the requirements for implementing the technology and any problems arising from its use. Topics discussed in the report include coating characteristics, potential VOC reduction capability, potential health problems associated with the use of ultraviolet (UV) coatings, and the economic impacts of conversion to UV coatings. The report provides Information to permit an informed Judgment on when and how to apply radiation-curable technologies for industrial application.

Book UV Coatings

Download or read book UV Coatings written by Reinhold Schwalm and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since UV curing (light induced polymerisation of multifunctional oligomers) is a very ecoefficient and energy saving curing method, the growth rates of UV curable coatings are in the range of 10% per year. The typical UV coatings are solvent free (100% solids), thus helping the industry and the environment to reduce significantly VOC (volatile organic compounds). Recently, the automotive industry has discovered that UV cured coatings are very scratch resistant, which stimulated very extensive work into the development of UV coatings for automotive applications. Since UV curing is very universal, also other systems besides the 100% solid (typical) UV coatings are developed, like waterbased UV- , UV powder and Dual cure (UV and thermal) systems. UV Coatings contains an overview of the technology, the curing process including the equipment necessary, the raw materials (resins, diluents, photoinitiators) used, the advantages and drawbacks of this fast emerging technology, as well as proposed technical solutions to tackle the disadvantages. Structure-property relationships will be given, especially regarding the mechanical properties of coatings as well as scratch resistance, mainly dealing with automotive performance criteria. The main part of the book will deal with new developments, like water-based UV coatings, UV powder coatings and dual cure systems, cured by UV and thermal energy, which have been developed to cure the coating on three dimensional substrates in shadow areas. The main applications of UV Coatings will be described, starting with the classical ones on temperature sensitive substrates, like wood, paper and plastics, where the UV curable coatings are already well established. * Looking at UV curing as a key to scratch resistant automotive clear coats * Ecoefficiency of UV Coatings * Comprehensive overview of the technology, materials and markets
